Rafa Sums Up Current Situation – Looks To Improve The Side

It’s hardly positive to get just one point from our first five league games and get knocked out of the League Cup at the first attempt by a lower division club at Nottingham Forest.

But Newcastle have been in every single game this season, and we have been unlucky not to pick up more points in the league against some top opposition.

The next two games are at Crystal Palace and Leicester City, and after those two games, we’ll have a better idea of how we can do this season.

The final game before the next International break is at Manchester United on 6th October.

Rafa Benitez – making notes at game yesterday

This is what Rafa said after the game yesterday:

“We knew it could be like that.”

“It’s a pity because we had some games where we could have got points, more than one against Cardiff.”

“But OK, we know where we are now and we have to keep the mentality and belief we had last season.”

“It’s a pity because we’re still scoring goals and creating chances.” “We have to do it earlier.”

“Maybe then it will be a different matter.”

“To be fair, I am more concerned about making up the margin that we now have against these top sides and losing games.”

“So for us it’s really important to concentrate on how we can improve the team.”

“We drew against Cardiff, we could have won.”

“But to lose against the top sides and to lose by this margin is something that everybody could have expected.”

It’s far too early in the season to talk about who may go down, and at this early stage, things can change quickly.

A couple of wins by Newcastle will see us surge up the table.

That’s what we’re hoping for – maybe in the next two games.

Rafa looking to improve side.. How many times have we heard that before.
Ironically when we go goal down and try we create chances and score. But still we play crap defensive footy. Why not give it a go from start and pretend at 0-0 we are a goal down then we might actually win?

    Aces,

We have seen far too often and far too late in some of the games this season that when we have a go things happen.

We look good. The crowd gets excited. We can match our illustrations opponents.

I just feel Benitez tactics at times are stifling the teams ability to attack and when they do attack it’s often too late.

I wonder whether Benitez is obsessed with goal differences.

MA shafted Rafa the team and the fans this summer

Im sure Rafa didnt want to spend any of the profits from player sales this summer prefering a good balance sheet instead

    Muppet

We have a team thats bargain bin
They went on strike due to MAs greed

How much do you earn posting bollocks here for Mr Bishop ?

Toon 22 you are a broken record. You are more annoying than amusing. Ashely is an POS. We all agree. What you fail to see is the Rafa’s style and constant negativity is hurting the players confidence. Why is that so difficult for you to see? We want a positive approach. Anyone who says we don’t have the players for it are not paying attention. They aren’t world beaters by any means but they’ve proven they can perform. We’ve seen them do it when given the chance and belief by their manager. Leadership and belief has won the day many times in history. I’m not certain Rafa instills that into his players.

To be fair Toon XI, Rafa’s sides pick up over the season. Just like last year. That is not the sign of a side that decreases in confidence due to the manager. That said, I wish we had a few more gamechangers in the side. No proven goalscorer is a real issue,

Griff – I do hope you are right. The teams performance has been atrocious so far. The Cardiff and Forest matches underline that point. Fingers crossed Rafa can turn the ship.

Rafa is a good manager and has done a good job with us. Is he my preferred choice? No. But at the same time, we’ll get no better under Ashley. And even if we somehow did, without a better squad and reasonable investment we’d not see much change.

Rafa is effective. He plays very pragmatic football even when he has managed better squads. He’s always had 2 holding players in front of 4 defenders, they won’t ever change.

I agree the main cause of our problem is Ashley. He has constantly under invested in every aspect of the club year in year out. His apathy for the club is clear and he does kill the spirit of the city.

He clearly passes a fit and proper person test so not sure what Ed’s problem is though. There are plenty of worse owners about that him. Villa’s, Sunderland’s last one, Coventry, Portsmouth, Blackburn.

The whole issue with being relegated, we’ll for me pretty much every team other than a very select few will do down at some point over the next 10/20 years. It goes in cycles. People seem to think that football doesn’t exist outside the Premier League.

We might start ‘improving the side’ when we start to play the best players we have eg. Shelvey, Rondon, Muto, Kenedy, Ritchie, Ki, Fernandez etc every game and let them gel no matter their performance. This chopping and changing around helps nobody and doesn’t give a player time to settle.
Players like Perez, Dummett, Murphy, Manquillo Hayden, Clark, Atsu and Joselu are just NOT good enough and should only be used when severe lapses of form or injury means they have to be used..
I realise that some of these positions will need player replacements but this MUST be pursued in the next transfer window.
Young players like Sterry, Roberts, Longstaffe and others couldn’t be any worse than some of theese perennial failures. Incidentally where is the much vaunted Yannik Toure?

When it comes to football, it’s no different from anything else. You get what you pay for. £4-5m players are simply not as good as £20-40m players.
Even if Ashley had allowed Rafa to spend the money he made in transfers – the very least he was promised – we could have bought a decent one No10 to work with Rondon. Or just outright bought a striker.
Rafa worked miracles last season to get us tenth, but players can’t keep playing above their level time after time.
Lascelles and Shelvey would probably fit in most other PL teams, but after that you struggle.
We probably have enough to survive, bearing in mind who we’ve played so far, but we want more than that.
I can’t imagine any other top manager ever working for Ashley now. Would you? And I can’t see these players doing any better for anybody else either. We don’t struggle to keep the ball because of tactics, we struggle because the players simply aren’t as good as those against us. The Chelsea game showed that they couldn’t string three passes together, which kinda ruins any attacking plans.
Our main hope lies – tragically – with Ashley releasing funds in January, but will he?
You simply can’t buy PL players under £15m now. Championship sides are spending that – we aren’t. Rafa has a proven track record, but he needs to buy decent quality to compete nowadays. We have the unenviable record of the lowest transfer record – and that was Owen ffs. He’s a grandfather now. Rafa’s fault? Give over.

Cyprus, under Ashley? No. Certainly not Wolves mate, they’ve got ambition. Burnley made the same mistake we did when we got into Europe – failed to strengthen – so they might well go down. That alone shows you that when you don’t move forward, you go backwards.
7th last season. Bottom this. Money talks in football now, more than ever before.

    Slank,
”Ashley is on record to have said that the club should be self-financing and he will no longer put his own money into the club. Therefore, fans shouldnt expect him to suddenly put his hand in his pocket unless the club is in dire straits”
    We’re not!!
He said Rafa and Lee could have every last penny, very misleading if giving him the benefit of doubt, an outright lie if you’re not prepared to.

    Silly question time

Ritchie, Why is he subbed all the time and not Perez? I see on here and on other sites that he features very high on the MOM board, Ritchie along with Yedlin are our threat.

so what is it we all see that Rafa cannot?

Why has Rafa left us with really only one type of CF, a target man type, both Rondon and Joselu dont have pace, and for what ever reason, Rondon is 2nd best, it seems like Joselu is his preferred CF. does that not worry anyone?

Why are our summer signings taking so long to get game time?

last thing,, Wolves,, wow,, they actually play football, how is it possible, Nuno Espirito Santo has not won the champions league.. I bet he is on half of what Rafa is on
