The Star are reporting today that both Jonjo Shelvey and Jamaal Lascelles are doubts for the game at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Jamaal injured his ankle in the warm-up for the Arsenal game and had to be withdrawn after struggling in the first half.
Ciaran Clark (or new signing Fabian Schar) is likely to deputize for the captain if he cannot make it.
Jonjo Shelvey was supposedly fit and on the bench last Saturday, but Rafa didn’t use him, probably as a precaution and the manager took some criticism for that.
Rafa Benitez with Jonjo Shelvey – Jonjo touch and go for Saturday
But it seems Jonjo wasn’t ready, and we are hoping that the extra week will clear up the injury and he can start on Saturday.
We need his creativity.
Both players are reported to be in light training this week, and Rafa will leave his decision on whether the players are fit enough to play until the last minute.
We hope both can play in what is a vital game for Newcastle – a game not against a top-six club that we have a decent chance of winning.
We should hear from Rafa tomorrow at his press conference about the fitness of these two top players for Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Just shows how cold hearted Rafa is by keep kicking Shelvey every time he’s about to get fit.

Comment #3Why name Shelvey on the bench of he wasn’t fit enough for any minutes? Would ki not have made more sense as he could play

Comment #4In hindsight a shame about MBabu, however, it always seemed he was often injured when he was here.
Just our bad luck he now seems completely injury free and at the top of his game.
I think it’s laudable that Rafa is trying to set up a root and branch forensic overhaul of the club but sadly it will come to nothing under Charnley who couldn’t negotiate buying a newspaper and an absentee and pretending to sell owner.

Comment #6Interesting the noises coming from St James’ re Rafa’s desire to overhaul the scouting / coaching ‘root and branch’
In theory, this could include improved facilities at Benton, clarification of lines of reporting and areas of responsibility, potentially even a new Director of Football to have the scouts reporting to direct and to have the final say on player purchases / sales.
I imagine this is far more likely to be key to his signing of a new contract than just re-jigging the current set-up.

Comment #10Report today that Southgate tracking tom cairney. Rate him a lot but hasn’t he played for Scotland or has it only been in friendlies, therefore he’s allowed to change nations. It seems that for Southgate, anyone but shelvey to fill the shelvey shaped hole in the England set up.

Comment #11I seen that article on GS tracking players for a call up. It seems to me that the fellow doesn’t like Newcastle players. I’m not sure whyfore but I’m not particularly fond of him myself and never have been. He’s never going to be anything other than a choke if you ask me.
I’d love to see longstaff being fast-tracked. Like the tiny bit I’ve seen of him and hope that he could step it up.

Comment #14Fenway, who own Liverpool, are worth nowhere near 5 billion. But they run the club spectacularly well. Premier league clubs, run properly, make ample money to pump back into the club while paying share holders substantial dividends. Liverpool are a prime example of what we could follow, on a smaller scale.
In our case, our owner pulls incredible profits out of the club, cerainly more than what Fenway pull out of Liverpool.

Comment #15Micky, intriguing. This is either the same guy from on here yesterday or a separate source.
I’m far more likely to believe it if it’s a second source. I do wish the radio station had been cited, they all have ‘listen again’

Could it be that:
A – the guy who tweeted the reports taking the pi$$;
B – the radio stations picked up on the Blair’s blog post of yesterday;
C – Bishop’s floated the story to stimulate interest
D – Ashley’s behind it to justify no January spend – again?
Or
It’s true?

Comment #22Rocco Commisso owner of Cosmos was trying to purchase AC Millan that deal fell through or its still in the balance, maybe as this is still up in the air he would look at other ventures within Europe and yes Newcastle may be an option. But I thought with the non-disclosure all parties sign they were allowed to talk about it until the deal is done?

Comment #24lesh, yep all of the above. Can’t imagine Ashley has given out so many details though – too much risk of upsetting a powerful and influential US businessman as he tries to get exposure in the States.
More likely to be a WUM or for real.

I find it disturbing that the EPL would refuse sight of the club’s report though they might cite commercial confidentiality for its refusal to disclose it.
Perhaps an open letter summarising areas of perceived NUFC non-compliance with its rules might help?
Would a request under Freedom of Information to the club and the EPL help?
But then, the club has professed its commitment to communication and meaningful dialogue with fans and stakeholders so it should be willing to share it’s report to the EPL. We’ll, maybe, the next FF’ll be could be cancelled at short notice, again?

Where corporate acquisitions are concerned, Non Disclosure usually refers to the non-disclosure of anything found during due diligence.

It didn’t help that Shelvey didn’t get on v Arsenal when Southgate was at the game! How on earth Shelvey isn’t in the squad I’ll never know ! Pathetic!
