Jamie Carragher’s piece yesterday in his Telegraph column is getting a lot of attention at Newcastle.
Jamie held nothing back and said Newcastle have no ambition under Mike Ashley and that Rafa would leave next summer when his contract is up.
One reason it was so eye-opening is that Rafa and Jamie keep in contact and you can bet they have had a few conversations about Rafa’s position at Newcastle.
Rafa is hoping the January window will be a good one for Newcastle and he has said many times he will not resume contract talks until after January and that the upcoming window will be critical in that decision.
That’s a message to Ashley to loosen the purse strings, but January is always a difficult window to get good players in.
Rafa Benitez – remains upbeat
Our best bet seems to get loan players in from the continent.
This is what Rafa said when asked about Jami[‘es column which was released minutes before the press conference started yesterday:
“I didn’t read that.”
“When we talk about my contract, my future, it is not the time for me to talk about that.”
“This week I have been focused, trying to analyze our performances in the last few games.”
“I’ve been trying to see what we can do at Crystal Palace to exploit their weaknesses, and to be sure to use our strengths.”
“I have to focus on these things, it’s what we have to do.”
“I’m really pleased here.”
“I like the city. I like the atmosphere and the fans and everything that I said before. The potential of the club is massive.”
“I don’t want my future to be an issue for this Press conference. We have to go to January, see what we do,”
“We must see: how can we do things? And, after that, it will be easier to know where we are.”
“My view was very clear at the beginning when I decided to stay: potential, project, to compete in the top 10.”
“That is not the case now. So then we have to review things.”
“It’s obvious for everyone that we have to do things in another way.”
“But at the same time, it’s very clear for me that we have to concentrate to get results and to stay in the Premier League.”
“Ask any fan in the street in Newcastle and they will know what the situation is.”
“If we can improve something in terms of what we want to do in the future, then fine. But we have to improve on the pitch right now, that’s it.”
“I know what is the situation and I try to manage in the best way possible,” he said, trying to hold back a smirk.”
“You have to be sure that you understand the situation, that you can see the big picture.”
“And that you think about what I have said so many times: You have to be realistic, and optimistic, too.”
Rafa as ever is so professional and his primary goal at the moment is to get some wins at Newcastle.
However bad the situation is behind the scenes it’s not helped by the lads getting just one point in our first five league games.
If we can get some wins before the next International break things will look a lot better.
And if we do well this season – there’s a lot more chance Rafa still stay at the club.
Somehow, I don’t have a good feeling about our game at Selhurst Park today.
But maybe that’s good news.
🙂

Comment #2Amazing that Dr Harrison thinks that
Jamie Carragher , who can hardly string a sentence
together on Sky sports and has been filmed spitting
in a childs face for mocking his beloved Reds –
actually wrote that erudite and well thought out article
in the Telegraph.
But Jail is right – it doesn’t matter

Comment #3Nice one Rafa. Clearly Jamie has been talking to him. He was brilliant at start if season on the Cardiff game too, putting Bellamy in his box as he tacitly supported ashley

You’ve answered your own question
Of course it matters because half of the
readers of the article will discount it because
of the tosser linked to it .

Comment #5We’re playing no different than we did last year.
Saying Shelvey is ineffective because we’re ultra defensive is BS was he ineffective last year?
He’s ineffective because hes not on the pitch!

Comment #6Jail…here’s an advise or two. Stop being a wise arse on other people’s expenses and time…
…and stop sidetracking any discussion you don’t like the outcome of!
You don’t have to throw your opinion on the lot all the time especially not among the crowed you never get along with!
And should you find yourself in a situation where you don’t like the answer you get then stop with the personal petty attacks…they don’t make you look good!
A will agree it’s not your fault people on here let you among others get away with anything…they just don’t like exposing themselves and be next in line for your pettiness…

Comment #11Just been reading through the last pages on the blog, Les Ferdinand, what a player, loved him, the fact he handed over the number 9 shirt to Shearer was brilliant, anyway, I got a tad drunk with him and his then girlfriend Dani Behr (remember her) in Singapore in 1996 or 97. Top guy, and she is very easy on the eye too – but a bit thick.,

I doubt many were fooled into thinking Carra wrote it. As a summary of where we are at, and where we probably will end up, it was thesis quality.
