Newcastle’s England U21 goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was not allowed to go out on loan in August.
The news was that the club wanted him to sign a new deal before they would let him go on loan.
It that’s true then Newcastle were willing to hinder his development to get Woodman to sign a new contract with his current deal running out in June 2020.
That doesn’t seem like the right way to try to keep your top young players on Tyneside.
And it’s not too surprising that some top clubs have been following the situation.
Arsenal, Fulham, and Celtic are said to be watching the situation and are keen on the young goalkeeper.
Freddie Woodman – Newcastle’s talented young goalkeeper
We expect Woodman to be loaned out in January, but it could be that some clubs could come in and try to buy the 21-year-old permanently.
That would be a poor deal for Newcastle as Woodman can still improve and he’s keen to become a top goalkeeper in England.
Woodman is keen to play and improve his game and said this recently:
“I’ve always said I enjoy playing football so whatever level it is, I am going to enjoy it.”
“I don’t have to play for the (Newcastle) U23s – I choose to play.”
“I just want to get the best out of a bad situation.”
The bad situation is he’s at Newcastle not playing much at all.
Freddie was still selected for the England U21 side during the recent International break so the England youth selectors still have great confidence in the lad.
We’re not sure what’s going on at Newcastle but we need to start treating the youngsters a lot better and not have them want to leave the club for opportunities elsewhere.
Woodman has 56 Youth caps for England including 6 at the U21 level.
