Rafa Benitez Lays Down The Law To Newcastle’s Fringe Players

Rafa Benitez is a big believer in competition for places in the side and when there is good competition, the player in possession is motivated to play well.

But there is not enough competition for places in the side at the moment, and the team almost picks itself every week.

Rafa wants fringe players like Christian Atsu, Jacob Murphy, Isaac Hayden, and Ki Sung-yueng to pick up their games and challenge for a starting position.

Jacob Murphy– must improve his game – start challenging for starting spot

This is what Rafa has said in the Chronicle today:

“I want them to perform on the pitch in training to put me under more pressure. It’s what we have to do.”

“I told the players on the bench to put me under more pressure.”  “I want them to push me harder.”

“We analyze things but also sometimes when you are making radical changes, it’s because everything is wrong.”

“I don’t accept it’s all wrong.”

“Yes we are losing but we have been very, very close in a lot of games.”

“We have to give confidence to the players and give confidence to the fans by reminding them that we did it last year.”

“We have to carry on working hard.”

Rafa remains confident he can turn Newcastle’s season around.

But the longer it goes without a win, the more difficult it will become, and then it will depend mainly on the mental strength of our players to fight for survival.

The lads did that so well last season, and we need to see the same thing again this season.

But it seems yet another season fighting relegation under owner Mike Ashley, and it’s something that Rafa has said he doesn’t want to be doing every season.

Best of luck with that one while Mike Ashley is still the owner.

Comments welcome.

If you want negativity to kill team morale, Moyes is your man.

If Ashley spends big (over 25m) in January it doesn’t change a thing.

It shows he trying to protect his investment because he’s scared of going down again.

It won’t show a change of heart or ambition or that he’s going to back Rafa.

No change, the protests shouldn’t change either other than to point this out!

    Ashley out!

How about laying the law down to the apparently undroppable players, I.e Perez, Diame

    Fringe players?

I would be laying down the law to the underperforming first team players to be honest

    NEW: Rafa’s January plans.

Wants three in as a minimum – with
adding to the final third a priority.

The problem is even if Ashley sanctions money for transfers in January we’re going to struggle to sign anyone. Clubs will know we’re desperate and hike the price up which we’ll balk at and which players will want to come here if we’re still bottom of the league?

When and if we sign anyone in Jan it’ll be around the 30th, how many games will be left.

There’ll be no hurry as we need to save wages.

OK Rafa, if you get the same players who look great in training, under performing on match days, should you continue to pick them?

What’s the betting that if Ashley does sanction any money in January, and I think he’ll be bound to in attempt to revive his PL cash cow, we’ll discover in the course of time that whatever money he releases has been added to the famous ‘interest free loan’.

Time to revive the speculation on who we are(n’t) going to buy in the window.

    Sturridge?

So he hopes for three players to come in, if they are the right quality i would be happy (not difficult to beat our last few windows), my only worry is if come 30th January a club comes in for Lascelles or Dubravka !

Can see the headlines now ” We tried to keep them, even offered them the chance of Mikes Villa in Miami (subject to availability) but they wanted a fresh challenge other than the relegation battles – signed for Brighton !

There is nothing that surprises me with AshLIE

Ok Mike I challenge you to make a statement in the Jan window. If you really are looking for players that can score goals and are getting upset at there present club how about you sanction transfers of Sanchez at Man U and Vardy at Leicester. Both players are upset and that would be a good forward line if Rafa plays two forwards. No loans, just plan old hand in pocket and purchase. I know fantasy land right but if MA really wants to try and win over the fans that type of transfer would be a step forward.

The only thing I’ll say in support of continuing to pick Perez who is underperforming is that when anyone else comes on, they hardly offer anything more.

Rafa is limited with his options. Yes it’s good to try new things to see if he can break the winless run, but if you are 90% sure the player you bring in will make the team worse, I see why he persists

Rafa to get a new contract? Rubbish.
Rafa will have money to spend in January? Rubbish.
Newcastle will break their transfer record in January? Rubbish.
In the unlikely event any of those statements are true, it’s too late, our fate is sealed.
