Lee Ryder – the Chronicle’s Chief Newcastle United writer is reporting that Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson is now in Atlanta in negotiations with club officials for the permanent transfer of Miguel Almiron in January.
The player’s agent Daniel Campos will also be involved in the talks.
Miguel Almiron – likely on his way to Newcastle
Here’s a tweet put out by Lee Ryder on the status of Newcastle’s bid to sign the talented and creative Paraguay International:
#nufc head of recruitment Steve Nickson is in the US at the moment working on Almiron deal. Claims from Atlanta the deal is close. That would be a massive boost given the uncertainty plunged around the club in last 48 hours. #mls

Newcastle are trying to get Almiron signed quickly and a deal agreed now which can then be executed when the winter transfer window opens on January 1st.
There is a small chance that Newcastle could have a new owner by then, but it’s more likely that if Ashley is being straight then one of the four bidders will have acquired Newcastle by the end of January.
Here’s at least one report from the US that says the deal will happen and it could be that most of the details have already been agreed before Nickson traveled over here to seal the deal.
Signing Miguel Almiron would be a terrific acquisition for Newcastle and would help Rafa decide to stay on at Newcastle.
It will break Newcastle’s transfer record of £17M we paid out for Michael Owen in 2005, two years before the iPhone was introduced – it’s such a long time ago.
Almiron’s Atlanta United take on Portland in the MLS final in Atlanta on Saturday and that’s likely to his last game for the club.
The Newcastle transfer target finished second in the MLS MVP (Most Valuable Player) voting behind his 25-year-old teammate Josef Martinez – the Venezuelan striker who scored 31 goals in 34 MLS games this season.
Maybe we should sign him too?
Comments welcome.

Comment #2“It will break Newcastle’s transfer record of 17M ” – the link implies its a loan deal with an option to buy at end of season for £15M – phew – don’t want any record transfer deals.
What position does his team mate, Josef Martinez, play. A double deal and also helps the player to settle in.

Comment #4Really good news this, though it’s a loan with option to buy. As long as we eventually sign him it’s great. Though I think it’s possible for him to sign for another club if he impresses once his loan deal is over?

Comment #6Blacknwhitebarmy- He plays as a striker I think exactly what we need, but one thing at a time, beggars can’t be choosers. I am really surpriesed we’re actually gonna pull this one off. Maybe in the summer we could go for his teammate.

Is it not 2 in total?
Either way I don’t see a loan happening when spurs arsenal and wham are interested in buying.
