Are Newcastle Also Considering Atlanta’s Star Striker For January?

Newcastle target Miguel Almiron was runner-up in the 2018 Landon Donovan MLS (Major League Soccer) MVP (Most Valuable Player) award.

Miguel was beaten out by his Atlanta team-mate Josef Martinez, who is a striker.

Martinez scored 31 goals this season and beat the record of 27, shared by Roy Lassiter, Chris Wondolowski and Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic now of the LA Galaxy was third in the MVP voting.

25-year-old Venezuelan striker Josef Martinez

The 25-year-old Venezuelan has played 46 times for his country with 9 goals, and Salomon Rondon knows his International team-mate well.

Josef Martinez stands just short of 5ft 8ins tall, and he used to play for Torino before being loaned to Major League Soccer expansion team Atlanta United back in January 2017.

Atlanta activated the option to buy in his loan contract in March of that year.

In the last two seasons, he has scored 52 goals in 60 games for Atlanta United who play today against Portland Timbers in the MLS Playoff Final in Atlanta.

The kickoff time is 8:00pm Eastern Time.

Almiron and Martinez have played together for two years for Atlanta, so they know how each other play.

Martinez seems to love it at Atlanta and has said he will stay with the club for as long as they want him.

It’s interesting whether the Newcastle scouts while watching Almiron for the last 18 months, have been impressed with Martinez.

Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson is over in Atlanta now trying to negotiate a permanent deal for Miguel Almiron.

Genjikia, would be nice to put out a team full of local lads and beat their expensively assembled team. (Expensive for a First Division side thanks to their parachute payment)..
Just curious, mate, where did you get your user name from? It’s a b*gger to remember! 🙂

Whether we sign anybody basically depends on a takeover. How many times have we been here before? I’m not getting too carried away simply because of history, but this player from the MLS League looks an ideal player to link up the play between midfield and Rondon.
Goalscoring is a knack. You either have it or don’t. This kid seems to have it and we desperately need somebody to play in Perez’s position. If nothing else, it will force Perez to improve his game or lose his place.
Never seen Martinez play so won’t even offer an opinion obviously. I’ll take a look for a YouTube collection of his goals, but Almiron looks PL quality. I hope the takeover occurs in time for Rafa to spend, but when it does occur we know Rafa will sign a new contact. Like having a new manager! 🙂

Yes, please – this player over and above Almiron for me. He is sheer class, gets tons of goals and can play a pass too. Built like a bulldog.

Hilarious about the U21s playing the Mackems. The U23s beat the Mackem U23s by 5 goals earlier this season, augurs well.

    Off out, laters
