There is news today that Newcastle are interested in 20-year-old Japan international winger Ritsu Doan in the January transfer window.
Newcastle are reported to have scouted the brilliant young attacking midfielder who signed for FC Groningen in the summer from Gamba Osaka after spending a season on loan there.
Doan received his first international call-up for Japan for the Kirin Challenge Cup in August of this year, after playing for all the Japanese youth sides.
He’s now in his second season in Holland and has played 44 times for Groningen with 14 goals and 6 assists.
Doan is versatile and can play on either wing, and he can score goals too, so Rafa is keen to get him to the club in January, although some top clubs are also tracking the player.
Last summer and again in October he was linked with a potential move to Manchester City and other clubs interested in this top Japanese youngster are Atletico Madrid and Juventus.
20-year-old attacking midfielder Ritsu Doan
Doan has just been named in Japan’s squad for the Asian Cup in UAE in January so he will not be available to play in January if Newcastle do sign him.
One advantage Newcastle have is that he would get more first-team playing time than at the other big clubs interested in him.
The 20-year-old has excellent finishing ability with either foot and is a good passer of the ball, but he is also strong on the ball and is good at tracking back and defending – which will please Rafa Benitez.
Doan has long been considered one of the top football talents of the future and made the Guardian’s Next Generation list in 2015 – a list of the world’s top up-and-coming young players – when he was just 17.
He would be an excellent buy for Newcastle – if we can get him.
What do you think?

Comment #3He sounds like a great buy – interesting to see that we’re actively going after Far East players – could be because the Asian Fans go mad about their home players and, as such our fan base and therefore our commercial revenue and global footprint will expand.
All good if they become successes.

Comment #7Pessimistic Mick “We’ll see Santa at SJP before we see Almiron – and then it’ll only be a loan.”
Sorry to burst your bubble PM, there’s zero chance of Santa arriving here on loan.
I have it on the QT from an Inside Elf.

Comment #8I can’t see where the rumours relating to the impending signing of the player from Atlanta is coming from. Somebody is pushing this story.
I don’t normally believe transfer rumours as such. But time I suppose will tell.
Why no news about the takeover, why is it so important to keep company name quiet. Isn’t about time the media engaged in good old fashioned investigative journalism especially the local press and uncover the mystery potential bidders, surely it’s not too much to ask.
