There is a report in the Sun today that deal-maker Garry Cook is leading a second bid to try to buy Newcastle United.
It is not known who is backing him with the funds, but they are thought to be located in the United States.
When Thaksin Shinawatra became the owner of Manchester City back in 2008, he appointed Cook to become the CEO of the club after the departure of Alistair Mackintosh.
So we assume if his consortium is successful he could then become the new CEO at Newcastle.
Garry Cook – leading a second group trying to buy Newcastle
Cook joined Nike way back in 1996 and led the marketing effort on the Nike project “Brand Jordan,” and so he formed many contacts here in the US.
He also knows Newcastle owner Mike Ashley quite well having worked in the sports retail business.
That’s about all the Sun report says about the Garry Cook led effort.
There’s nothing about whether they are in the due diligence stage.
And they reiterate their claim that the Peter Kenyon led bid, backed by Rockefeller Capital Management, is £100M short of the £300M that Mike Ashley wants for the club.
We’d be surprised if that’s accurate with Peter Kenyon already in the due diligence phase of the takeover and the Star reported to be only weeks away from completing the deal.
We just hope the takeover is done quickly and doesn’t drag on and on like most things at Newcastle under owner Mike Ashley.
What do you think about this?
Comments welcome.

Comment #2I loved Alan McInally’s assessment of Rafa’s work at Newcastle on Sky yesterday. “If Rafa repeats last season’s results with this squad, they should carry him around Newcastle for a fortnight “

Comment #4“It was the scissor motion that makes it a red”
it looked a bit clumsy and not overly violent force.

Thanks for correcting me – I thought Richie Betts looked a bit pale when I saw him! As you say, alive and playing.
Berry Oakley was the name I should’ve added to Gregg and Duane’s.

Gary Cook worked for Nike for 12 years
The Gulfstream last week flew from Portland OR
to Lax (Phil Knight lives in La Quinta) then to
San Fran then Ncl
Just imagine if we were owned by Nike !!!!!!!!!

One thing I can say is the info I have is someone MUST have proven the funds are there or the part my source is involved in would not be happening.
I messaged this person on Friday night and they are still involved but still do not know who buyer is as they are involved with their appointed advisors.
I did ask the question about the reported shortfall and I was told clearly this is not the case with the group they are involved with.
Mind you I suppose this could be a different group other than Kenyon and Kenyon may be short.
The group in discussions now with the club (whoever they are) have proven the funds.

Comment #11After our last home defeat I said that Rafa appears to have sorted out our away formation and tactics but not our home form.
Yesterday’s result confirmed the away formation and tactics.
Now we have to see whether Rafa has sorted out our home form. No better time than against Fulham whose defence is shocking.
Rondon, Perez, Ki and the much improved Atsu to start. As for the rest I’m not too sure.
I’m still of the opinion that a 3-5-2 formation is the best for home.
My team would be:
Lascelles – Fernandez – Schaar
Murphy – Diame – Ki – Muto – Atsu
Perez – Rondon
Murphy and Atsu have the ability to hug the touch line and get past their fullbacks and whip in a cross for Rondon and Perez. I would play Muto in a free role as he has a lot of energy and can support the attack and midfield where he is not afraid of a stiff tackle. The Fulham defence is fragile and should be attacked mercilessly.

Comment #14Jib…Kenedy is not our player to improve! We need someone who contributes…
Munster…I agree! I think Rafa will send Kenedy packing could he get a proper LW and it would free up a loan space for a midfielder…

I watched TSN yesterday as well
I thought at the time they didn’t look like your normal
footy fans and the scarves although black and white weren’t
quite toon scarves as though added as an afterthought.
If they were yanks they must be serious because sitting
in a windswept stadium in the Pennines in December is
not funny.

Comment #18Whoever is going to be the buyer and it’s looking increasingly likely that there will be a new owner they must have the funds available to buy the club outright and sufficient funds for strengthening the squad.
From what happened with that women clearly Ashley has to be convinced that any prospective owner has the ready cash upfront. He may have once mentioned ‘instalments’ but that is totally unacceptable as it implies that ready cash is not readily available.
We wait and see.
