The Chronicle are reporting that Newcastle have an interest in signing Borussia Dortmund forward Maximilian Philipp.
But the striker has played only about 20 minutes since last October and his agent is saying he needs game time; well – that seems true enough.
The striker is reported to be available for around £19M, but Rafa would surely want to take a look at him before spending that amount of money.
Newcastle will try to get the 24-year-old German U21 International on loan for the rest of the season with an option to buy.
That would be a decent deal for Newcastle – if we can do it.
24-year-old Borussia Dortmund forward Maximilian Philipp
It’s not known if Dortmund would be open to a deal like that since they have made him available for a permanent move.
Hannover and Besiktas have also been linked with an interest in the player.
Philipp was born in Berlin and stands 6ft tall.
The attacking midfielder signed a five-year contract with Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017 from SC Freiburg for a fee reported to be about €20M (£17.8) plus bonuses.
He has played 43 times for Dortmund with 11 goals and 7 assists and this season he’s played 15 games in all competitions with 2 goals and 2 assists.
He started his career at his hometown club, Hertha BS and in 2008 he joined Tennis Borussia Berlin.
In 2012, he signed with SC Freiburg and while there for five years he scored 18 goals and had 23 assists in 88 total appearances for them.
If the lad is fit and we can keep him fit it would seem a reasonable deal on loan for the rest of the season and if he’s good enough we can sign him in the summer.
