Rafa Benitez was upbeat at the end of the game tonight at Blackburn and pleased to progress to the 4th round of the FA Cup.
The lads played well tonight with two local lads – Sean Longstaff and Callum Roberts scoring in the first 22 minutes of the game.
And in extra time with the score at 2-2 Joselu and Perez scored to give us the 4-2 win.
Rafa Benitez at tonight’s game
Rafa said he was happy with his players:
“This is a good example of everything I was trying to say: it’s good to progress, and at the same time, it’s a risk because you have injuries.”
“We will see if the players are fine, and try to get three points against Cardiff. “
“I’m pleased with the majority of the players. It was a difficult game.”
“We started well but the reaction, after Blackburn scored, of the young players and the senior players – they did really well.”
Now we must beat Cardiff on Saturday.
Rafa also said he thought the two injured players – Lascelles and Clark – are not badly injured.
We should know more about the players once they are assessed by the medical staff.
Comments welcome.

Online, is there any chance you can email or get in touch with Ed to get my details please? Couple of things I want to ask you, and no not fishing for extra info as such, but when I email you in private, you will see why. Don’t want to put it out on here for what will be obvious reasons. Same goes for you Bambams. Thanks

Comment #10Ed’s obviously feeling the win – rattling along….
Just on Shearer’s tweet to Lobby and Cal Roberts, I can’t imagine how that made them feel but I reckon the acknowledgement from him will have them on cloud 9, if they weren’t already. Great gesture.

Comment #11Funny how nobody has mentioned the Hayden header which hit the post, or the penalty shout when Joselu was fouled in the box, or even Lobby’s second shot which was heading for the bottom corner with the keeper unsighted before it deflected off a defender’s backside.
We don’t need to mention these things when we win, but all were signs of the better quality chances we created compared to Blackburn.
I thought their left back had a good game. Amari’i Bell. Good in attack and shut our attacks down on the right most of the night.

Not only are Roberts and Longstaff over the moon about Shearer’s praise, but I bet their parents were as proud as any parent could be knowing the the stature of the man doing the praising! Beautiful evening for them all!
Cal Roberts was probably more unnerved by being interviewed on TV after the match, than actually playing! 😉

Comment #15Just thought I would put this out there.
What would the blog think if PK was offering KK and AS and a few other top lads to become part of the club..ambassadors, shareholders etc and a few on the board , for an opt in of £1million ?
And this just to get on board people who really care about Newcastle United . Not part of the price Ash wants.
What think Lads..n’ Lasses. ?

Comment #16So what was going on with Lascelles and Rafa when shortly after coming on Jamaal obviously could not make a go of it? My guess is Rafa was trying to teach his young captain a critical lesson: “you may think you are being tough and heroic by playing while hurt, but you are hurting the club when you don’t tell me that you are actually injured BEFORE I pick the match day squad, let alone before I waste one of my 3 substitutions putting you in and immediately having to pull you back off!”.

If the new owners, (wishfull thinking!) would like to acknowledge Alan Shearer’s contribution to the history of NUFC, they could start by changing the bar back to ‘Shearer’s’

Comment #28Would love it, LOVE IT, if folks like KK and Shearer could be a significant part of the club. One day, maybe.
chico, lol yep it’s gotta be unnerving going from a situation where nobody outside of Newcastle knows your name to having it splashed all over the media and then having to speak sensibly in front of a TV camera when all you want to do is savour the win. You’d be right about the parents, btw.
Did you see my post the other day about Longstaff senior being the ex-captain of the Great Britain ice hockey team? He’s from the North East also, he’s still player coach of the Whitley Bay Warriors in his mid-40s. Sporting greatness runs in the family, I think we all have high hopes for Matty Longstaff emulating his brother.
Apparently both lads are excellent cricketers, too, and still play when they can get away with it. Don’t tell Rafa 😉

C’mon, spill the beans about the rock star you had round at yours the other night – something makes me think of Sonja Kristina, the University Theatre and the Gosforth Hotel back in the day when he was teaching. If it’s who I think it is, I haven’t seen him for years.

Is Kinga still involved with Whitley Warriors ? I was a guest now and then .
Think Kinga was manager on the commercial side .. He always said he was Manager.
He was in the meat trade one time . Going back 25 years.
Best match I ever seen WW 11 v 11 Durham (who were best team in the country) might of been ten all ! Lost count. Bloody great atmosphere.

I honestly don’t know where Lobby came from – but I haven’t just plucked it out of thin air, I promise!
I don’t think there’s enough nicknames in footy these days. ‘Killer’ Kilcline was one of my favourites.

Not too sure about Beardsley’s Boozer but the Bobby Robson room, Les Ferdinand Lounge, Jinky Jimmy’s smoking room, the Barraclough buffet or the SuperMac saloon bar in Tino’s Tavern or Keegan’s Kellar might work.

Comment #39OLG, I’m a casual observer of the Whitley Warriors, I think I’ve been three times but always intend to go more.
I know a couple of coaches at North Shields Juniors FC, most of my knowledge of the Longstaffs comes through them.
I did catch up with my neighbours re Nathan Harker the other day, he’s their nephew. They’re very excited about the fact he’s spending more time with the 1st team squad. He’s got quite a queue ahead of him, but he’s still only 20 so time yet.
