Midfielder Made Of The Right Stuff – Determined To Succeed On Tyneside

Jonjo Shelvey made his first appearance since early January for Newcastle on Saturday, and when he came on after 79 minutes, we were still trailing Everton 2-1.

But his positive attacking play helped Newcastle to a fabulous come-from-behind 3-2 win against the Toffees.

It turns out that Jonjo was disappointed with some stories that Newcastle could sell him to West Ham for £20M this summer – partly because of the emergence of young local star Sean Longstaff.

But it’s obvious Jonjo is desperate to stay at Newcastle, and he wants to end the season in style and help Newcastle move up the table.

Jonjo Shelvey and Rafa Benitez during training

This is what the 27-year-old has said in the Chronicle today when asked what his goal was:

“Just to try and get back in the team. I need to end the season on a high,”

“People remember the last three months of the season; they don’t remember the start of the season. I think people go into the summer remembering the last three months.”

“That’s what I want to do; finish the season strongly, get back into the team, and try and fit into the gaffer’s plans again.”

“I’ve obviously done a lot at this club and I’ve always offered myself to play, so I just want to get back involved and get in the 18.”

“My aim is to be on people’s lips going into the summer, talking for the good reasons.”

“The only way I’m going to do that is by playing every week for Newcastle, and that’s my number one aim.”

We were impressed with Jonjo during the game but even more so with his comments after the game.

The player seems to love it at Newcastle, and he is determined to stay at the club and be successful.

It’s been a tough season for Jonjo – not doubt about that – and it’s mainly becasue of injuries.

But he now has the opportunity in the final 8 games to show everybody the skills he has and that he can continue to do an excellent job on Tyneside.

We hope that’s exactly what he does.

Comments welcome.

If Rafa goes the club will release a statement saying we tried we offered great personal terms but rafa sees his future else where we would like to thank for his time here
    Blah blah blah

Unless rafa tells us something we will know bugger all about what he was really offered

    beer,
Imo, he’ll be offered 8M a year with a 5M bonus for finishing tenth and keeping schtum. They’ll then release a statement saying they offered him the chance to be the highest paid manager in the league, they still have to explain why he turned that “opportunity” down though. I think the first stumbling block will be the NDA on contract talks that allows the club to either say foot all or make up a load of bollorx without Rafa being able to tell his side of the story.

Jib – you showed your true colours yesterday by making derogatory comments about my 11year old grand daughter. Why you would want to do this is beyond me.
I never make nasty comments about members of your family and I requested you withdraw your comments which you have failed to do.
I will be forced therefore to respond to you (and your cronies) appropriately.

Did you mention Jacques Loussier’s recent passing? If ever there was one who divided opinion, ’twas he.

I have read one stat from that times article. Ayoze Perez is the number one top attacker in the PL for recoveries (127) and interceptions (35).

A few times I have read on here that Perez apparently works hard without actually doing anything etc. Doesn’t seem to stand up that view.

Same times article. Again only stats for forwards.

6th for Chances created (38). Behind only hazard, willian, salah, sterling and zaha.
    – backs what I’ve been saying all season. He has created a lot for us just haven’t been converted by others so is forgotten about.

Similarly last season he was 13th for this with a total of 36. So he is getting better.

1st for tackles (50), 14 more than the next player.

4th for possession won in the final third (22).
