Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson hasn’t come out yet with his prediction for the Bournemouth vs Newcastle game on Saturday afternoon.
Another Newcastle win after last week’s heroics against the Toffees will allow Newcastle fans to go through the two-week International break with the high hope that we can even finish in the top 10 this season and replicate what the team did last term.
Paul Merson believes Newcastle should be shooting for one the top six positions – challenging teams like Arsenal – and he’s right about that.
Paul Merson – Newcastle should be challenging clubs like Arsenal
This is what Merson told Gillette Soccer Saturday before our game last week at home to Everton:
“In the long term, when you support Newcastle and travel home and away like they do and fill out every ground they go to, whether it is a Monday night, a Wednesday night or the trains are on strike, they fill it.”
“So, for me, I would be aiming for Arsenal and teams like that.”
“I am not saying this year or next year but if I am going to be supporting that team for the next 10 years then that is where I want to be aiming.”
After those comments, Newcastle made a stellar comeback against Everton, who have spent some big money in both of the last two summer transfer windows – but we beat them 3-2.
Paul’s prediction was there would be lots of goals and he thought it would end in a 2-2 draw – so he wasn’t’ far off.
And we missed a penalty too – the first ever penalty miss at Newcastle for Matt Ritchie.
There are signs Mike Ashley may be willing to finance some of the investments Rafa wants to be made in the club before he signs a new deal.
Newcastle will invest in their Youth Academy and U23 side for next season and there are several new positions now open.
That’s a good first step.
