Ayoze Perez is a man in form and Friday night took his goals for the season up to 8 with 7 of them coming in the Premier League.
He is two goals behind Salomon Rondon who hit the crossbar again at Leicester and has 10 goals with 9 goals in the Premier League.
Last season Ayoze was Newcastle’s top goalscorer with 10 goals, and 8 of those were in the Premier League.
So Perez is close to beating his goals of last season – with four matches to play.
Ayoze Perez – speaking to the press
The Leicester result was massive for Newcastle United – we’re almost safe now.
Perez was asked if that was Newcastle’s most important win of the season after the game:
“Definitely, that’s how I feel,”
“That’s what we all feel in the dressing-room as well. We played really good, and credit for the team and the fans and the city.”
“They deserve that we’re staying in the Premier League for another season.”
“It should be enough. We still have four games left to go and other teams have to play each other. We have a tough schedule, but if we play the way we did, hopefully, we can keep climbing.”
“I’m not going to lie to you, it’s been very tough for players such as myself and Miguel Almiron.”
“You have to adapt yourself to what the manager wants. We have had to suffer and stick together and stick to the plan.”
“At the end, we still have quality up front to create chances and that’s our job. You have to suffer like we did against Leicester.”
“That’s what you have to do, otherwise you are going to be even lower in the Premier League and we would have been fighting relegation.”
“We have to stick to the plan, do what the manager wants because he has been in football for many years and he knows what he is talking about.”
“The team has achieved great things,”
“Maybe with another manager we would have struggled even more. That’s what happened in my second season here, we were relegated with a great team.”
“That’s football, anything can happen.”
“Hopefully, I can improve on the number of goals I had last season,” “Hopefully, there is more to come in the four games we have left.”
We have four games left to play, and all are winnable.
Sat 20 Apr Newcastle vs Southampton 5:30pm
Sat 27 Apr Brighton vs Newcastle 5:30pm
Sun 05 May Newcastle vs Liverpool 4:30pm
Sun 12 May Fulham vs Newcastle 3:00pm
12 points from those games – yes, we know it’s unlikely – but it would take us up to 50 points for the season.
We’d take that in a New York second.
Comments welcome.

I had it last year, the father in law paid a lad a shift for it for me but it wasn’t great so decided not to actually purchase it once it lapsed.
Will probably look into getting it again from a different source next season.

Comment #21Not that I’m a frequenter of Sunderland blogs but if ever there was a living example of Dante Aleghieri’s “Inferno” it’s worth a foray to watch them writhe in agony and tear each other to shreds let alone their hapless “players” and “manager” – not helped of course by a few mischievous mags posting little wum jabs that really stirs up the maggots ha ha. The Coventry thread I landed on had about 90 pages of this screaming anguish; I got to about page 5 couldn’t read any more through the tears of laughter :D.
I resisted the urge to post “Ever thought about hiring another banner plane, that might help?”. Can’t promise to resist it forever though. 🙂

Comment #40Mark Douglas talked to RB
Benitez admitted on Friday that he and his team have started putting together plans for the 2019/20 season at St James’ Park, that will enable him to embark on phase three of his black and white rebuild.
Phase one was ripping it up and starting again in the Championship
Phase two was making Newcastle Premier League ready a survival mission for each of the last two seasons which has meant leaning back on defensive strength and safety-first tactics against the division’s heavyweights.
In phase three Benitez wants to be in a position where his team doesn’t have to do everything perfectly and rely on mistakes from the opposition to pick up the odd point against the top four.
It won’t mean a radical overhaul of playing style – Newcastle aren’t going to suddenly become all-out attack. But as fans have seen with Miguel Almiron’s introduction, Newcastle now have an added dimension to their attacks and it has created problems for opponents. In Benitez’s evolution, adding more pace and a midfield metronome to his side would be key.
His blueprint will be to add a small number of carefully picked players who he feels can work within the system that he believes is tried and trusted.
He wants a left-back, a right-back, a winger and a striker as a minimum.
Doesn’t sound to me like he’s planning on a departure
