Newcastle United are now safe from relegation in the Premier League after Liverpool beat Cardiff in south Wales this afternoon by 2-0.
There is now no way the 3rd bottom side with 31 points can catch Newcastle on 41 points with only 3 games to go.
Cardiff City had to beat Liverpool today to be able to catch Newcastle who also have a better goal difference than the Blues.
In the other late game today, Crystal Palace got a great win 3-2 at Arsenal and they go above Newcastle by a single point.
Newcastle are now in 13th place and Burnley play at Chelsea tomorrow.
It looks like the best we can do is finish in 11th place.

Comment #9Newcastle could put a major spanner in the works for Liverpool, they have to play Barca May 1, then us May 4 and then Barca May 7th.
So what is Klopp going to do?
Champions league important?
League of course Important, think it depends on the Manchester Derby.

Comment #10Safe and I think looking good for 11th and beating last season’s points tally.
A point or 3 against Brighton next weekend, then Liverpool visiting St James in their title pursuit – as much as Rafa loves the club, I’m sure he won’t be minded to allow another manager to achieve what he didn’t there by winning the PL, has the makings of a classic, maybe we can repay them after all these years for the 4-3 defeat? Then Fulham away, another very possible 3pts. SHould be a cracking finsih to the season.
West Ham on a rotten run and have got:
Spurs (a)
Southhampton (h)
Watford (a)
Palace have
Everton (h)
Cardiff (a)
Bournemouth (h)
Bournemouth have
Southampton (a)

My point was, and the reason I used a Ferrari was, because of course he wants him, he’s the perfect manager, he can scrape survival for minimal outlay why would he not want him? But you saying it like he really means it is off the mark, if he really wanted him to stay he would have rang him up and arranged a meeting and there wouldn’t need to be this war of words. Like when Ashley hollowly said he wants him to stay in that sham interview he gave, he could have added and I’ll do anything I can to make that happen, he didn’t though, just as he hasn’t contacted him to sort this mess out. getting his goon to say the training facilities were fine was a very public slap in the face. You can point to his buying Almiron, do you honestly think he would have done that if we were tenth. Unfortunately due to work I can’t roll up a spliff and not get stressed about it, the whole sorry saga has very stressed out!!!

Comment #14Actually looking at their respective run ins I’m leaning towards Brighton switching places with Cardiff, perhaps by a single point which for me would signal a satisfying coup de grâce to all those daft hare-brained assertions they had more ambition, spent more wisely, had better players, better forward-looking, bright, future-proof managers ya da ya da ya da…. 🙂

We’ve been pretty much safe since beating Leicester, would a phone call to arrange a meeting when mathematically safe, explaining that he really wants to keep him and that they’ll definitely work something out been so difficult to make, It would have saved this very public and increasingly bitter war of words. Is that hard for you to understand?

Comment #16Jib do you really think that’s how the deal went? As if Charnley, the man with an up arrow printed inside his glasses, said last season “ok you got us to tenth after a testing season, let’s see you keep this lot up again on a shoestring next year – mathematically mind you, none of yer “we look safe now” rubbish – and then, at the very last minute when we’ve hacked the world and his dog right off with all this brinkmanship, we’ll start talking”. Is that how you would do it, Jib?

Do you not think it would be fitting that it should be us pi$$ing all over Liverpool’s PL title just like Stan Collymore pi$$ed all over our’s all them years ago?

Comment #20The fact that all the relegated clubs have spent more than us will be music to Churnleys ears and he can smugly outline in next years accounts that our spending less saved us from relegation last year and that this seasons astronomic crash was part of the five year plan.

Comment #23Don’t normally do predictions but I reckon it’s highly possible Man u will lose against city and Chelsea, beat Huddersfield and draw with Cardiff, whereupon OLG, after handing them the most dismal season end in living memory, will be dispatched to the fjords to find Mr Supernova, Catchy from Norway, and smack him across the face with lutefisk for putting a stat-curse on him. 😀

Comment #26Right. Before anybody thinks it’s over, we must try to beat Liverpool.
A matter of honour. They tried like hell to beat us in 96. As did Blackburn etc.
We were the new kids on the block. Other teams did not like it. I think we were seen as a threat to the established order.
At the same time just about every team rolled over for Man U. Qpr a draw, Saints beat them and we were unlucky.
To my dying day I will think that. The other teams did not give it their all against Man U.
If you ever see the games repeated watch the winning goals Cantona gets. Think it’s against Spurs and Arsenal. Strolls through their team to shoot.
I’m not biased you know. I’m not some sort of NUFC nut that sees everything through black and white eyes.

Comment #27The owner is generally away at the beginning of the summer transfer window. I doubt this Easter escape will be a replacement for that event and as usual transfers will be held in limbo as well as Rafas new contract. We will be playing the kids in China, with returning loan players in order to decide how few new players are required.

you sound like Ferguson playing his mind games in the last week of that campaign when we had to play catch up with 3 games Leeds Forest and Spurs. He complained Leeds hated tham and would throw it Forest were due to play us for Stuart Pearces testimonial so wouldn’t try.
We beat Leeds at Ellend Road on the Monday night 0-1 leading to KK’s infamous ” I’d just love it…….” tirade against Ferguson. I loved it as did loads of Leeds fans I watched game with in pub ( mind they do hate Man U more than Man City and Liverpool do I think!!) but press thought Ferguson had beaten KK in mind games.
We could only draw against Forest away ( ian Woan scoring for them – bane of our lives) on Thursday and this meant going into final Sunday having to beat Spurs at home and Boro to win against Manu at Ayresome Park. We could only draw – running on empty by then but Noro were beaten 3-0 anyway so that was that.
!2 point lead in January overtaken with the pivotal game being our 1-0 loss at home to Manu U in March that year – Cantona mishit shot into ground over keeper after being played off park in first half.
As I recall it we were popular with most other fans ( some Leeds fans in pub actually shouting “GETIN” when Gillespie scored against them before sheepishly realising it was against them). Even Sky were for us dubbing us the Entertainers and I doubt any team played poorly just because they wanted to stop us winning it.
If we had won it I often wonder what might have been not just for us but for effect on playinsg styles in PL. Best ever season in my time as a supporter and only likely to be surpased when we win something under Rafa and Championship doesn’t count 🙂

Comment #33Man U would rather City won Premiership than Liverpool. Despite their inter-city dislike of each other, there’s no way they’d want to “help” Liverpool win the title. Watch City get an easy win this mid-week. As toon-thro-and-thro, I couldn’t be happier than watch the bin-dippers fail.

Yes but Ferdinand was unusually wasteful if he hadnt been we would have had a game to eclipse the following season’s 5-0.
I’ve posted before that it wasn’t the Liverpool or Blackburn defeats that hurt us but this game not only a 6 pointer but the win gave Man U massive confidence with Cantona back from his ban that they could cut back our massive lead.

Comment #37See a few think teams roll over against Man U but I don’t think it is delberate (apart from Boro on that last day in 95-6 !!). Endo of season games often throw up rogue results ( Mackems against Everton etc couple of seasons ago).
When Leeds and then Liverpool and later Arsenal were in their pomp sides usually were beaten quite easily and nothing to do with them not trying just outplayed by strong sides.
Now if you want to suggest referees and pundits give them an easy time well i definitely won’t argue with that!
