Newcastle have been linked with Frankfurt left-back Jetro Willems since his days at PSV Eindhoven when his good friend Georginio Wijnaldum played at Newcastle. Our first reported interest was back in December 2015.
Jetro Willems -Newcastle still very interested
Willems was interviewed on the Dutch program VTBL Sunday evening and claimed that both Roma and Newcastle are interested in him.
We were last linked with Willems in December, so Newcastle have maintained a constant interest in the 22 times capped international.
Willems joined Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2017 for £4.5M and has since played 65 times for the German club.
Though this past season, Willems has found it hard to get into the Frankfurt side starting only seven games in the Bundesliga. Of those seven starts, only one has been since December.
Due to Frankfurt’s formation of having three center-backs, Willems has mostly played in midfield this season. Whereas last season he made 19 starts in the league primarily on the left.
In this interview, it appears as though the player is frustrated at Frankfurt with his lack of playing time and being played out of position.
With Newcastle in need of a left-back, Willems certainly fits the mold. He is still young, having just turned twenty-five and also would not require a significant fee.
The concern we would have is that this player has been tracked since the McClaren days and may not be a player that Rafa rates.
However, if Rafa would sanction the deal, then Jetro Willems could be a good addition to the Newcastle squad.

Comment #1He’s reputed to have a big ego and often falls out with
fellow players – maybe not Rafa’s cup of tea.

Comment #2I think Rafa would probably be of a mind to swerve any player tracked for McClaren whether Carr – sourced or not. I don’t see this one happening somehow just appears like a rehashed opportunist bit of hack rumour.

As for Ashley flying to see Rafa – I really don’t think so. The next we’ll hear about anything concrete is when there’s a press conference announced a t SJP.
Incidentally does anyone know the number of ashLIE’s helichopter? That can easily be tracked…
I see #chopperwatch is alive and well and in capable hands with DubaiMicky.
Funny, though, I thought watching choppers was illegal in Dubai

Comment #4A good player but sure if he has the mentality to play for Rafa best looking for someone better!
So West Brom can’t afford Gayle’s wages?! He is now on 55k a week!? Must have been from when he got that new contract
Personally I would keep Gayle next season which would allow us to sell Joselu and get someone younger to replace him! The jury is also out on Muto and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him get shifted as well.
Rondon isn’t going to play 38 games next season so we need someone to compete with him that knows the system and knows what to do! The new formation would create a lot more chances for Gayle than what he was previously getting for us the season before!
Gives Rafa an option to play the two of them up front in some games as well as both would pressure defenders!
Gayle is also a very useful option to have off the bench!
Just can’t see Rafa being allowed to get Rondon and another striker better than Gayle in terms of a budget

Comment #5Gayle couldn’t hit a barn door in our first season in the Prem. It’s as if he feels he has to snatch at chances as he knows he has less time to pick a spot. In snatching at them, he often hits the keeper or misses the target.
It was frustrating in our first season back in the Prem watching a player I expected to have a great season miss chance after chance which he was burying in the Champo. I just don’t think he can make it in the Prem, much as I like him, and should stay in the Champo to be in contention for the golden boot every year.
West Brom saying they can’t afford his wages – is this a tactic in advance of negotiating over Rondon? Otherwise it just makes no sense at all. His wages will almost guarantee them another shot at promotion next season.

Comment #6People seem to be panicking that we can’t do any transfer business because Rafa and Ashley are still negotiating but the season hasn’t really ended yet – I can’t imagine Liverpool or Spurs will be selling any players yet!

I think a lot of it was down to confidence and him having fitness issues by the end of the season he was causing teams real problems with his movement etc
I just can’t see Rafa being allowed to bring in Rondon and another striker of a similar calibre which is what we need to take us forward so Gayle might be the next best option as even if we get 20 million for him we would only receive 4 million in installments that window……..

Comment #15A couple of non NUFC related items in the media caught my eye over the weekend.
One is the reality show exploitation of those on them and you do have to feel a bit of sympathy for the blokes who are told to sh^g as many beautiful women as they can, poor s0ds.
The other was a mention was the possibility of a Mayfair restaurant opening to serve to the rich and famous the specialised street food of Sunderland, Teeside, Seaham and Blythe.
Just a bit curious of what that is?

Comment #20Rafa has mentioned a couple times, everyone has their targets and the position we find ourselves in is in order to get the first choice targets, we have to move early. His words.
If we are being delayed, we’ll likely lose out on our targets.

Comment #33To be fair to West Bromwich a 15 million transfer fee and a 4-5 year contract on 55 grand a week is a pretty significant outlay like.
It’s just not viable for a championship club that’s looking to cut costs. It would actually be a lot cheaper for them to keep Rondon for the final year of his contract.
