There is a report in the Daily Mail that Newcastle are interested in an ambitious move for Mario Fernandes of CSKA Moscow.
Mario Fernandes– Russia’s Brazilian right-back
This is a world class player who starred for the hosts in 2018 World Cup. He undoubtedly would be an impact signing at Newcastle but glaring factors make this link a little suspect.
Mario Fernandes is a Russian international who also has one cap for Brazil. He was granted Russian citizenship in June 2016 and has since been capped 16 times for them.
Fernandes has been at CSKA Moscow since a £9.45 move from Brazilian club Gremio in the summer of 2012 and has gone on to make 235 appearances for the club.
The attacking full-back would be an instant upgrade for Newcastle on the right. He can play further forward as a winger but is primarily deployed as a full-back. His attacking ability is very much an integral part of his game as he has averaged 4 goals and 6 assists over the past four seasons.
There are, however, two proverbial “elephants in the room” with this report. Fernandes will be 29 in September and will cost a reported £26.5M.
It is extremely unlikely that Ashley would sanction a move of this sort. The player is just too old and costs too much money.
Fernandes is under contract until 2022 and Atletico Madrid are heavily linked with him.
While this would be an excellent signing for a club striving to break into the top eight next season, we just can’t see this one happening.

Comment #1The way things are going there’s more chance of Brighton sacking their new manager and hiring another manager in the time it takes to sign Rafa up.

Your all heart.
Although it seems incredible to you what I reported this evening was 100% true ,I was asked the question about 2 months into the Kenyon interest, It’s all correct and happened.
I knew at that point because of the question that Ash was still looking for a buyer.
If you knew who asked me you would understand .
Now anymore nonsensical patter from you and I will engage with you night and day ..ps ..you won’t like it .
You have been making derogatory comments so you will be answered in kind .
Fair enough ?

Comment #3I know there’s not much to talk about regarding Newcastle especially since everything is pretty much hinging on these contract talks. But please, no need to start up these takeover rumours again.

Comment #9I’ll take you up on that Ronaldo but only if I hear anything concrete..
I think a lot of people were used in the last episode of the for sale saga ..I knew Kenyon was used to flush out a buyer ..but only at a late stage .
Ask yerself ..Where is Kenyon ? No statement as any statement from him will tell you that the Ash camp was up to its tricks once again.. they are without doubt toying with us and playing games.

Comment #16Aye not a bet …reason is If a sale falls at the last hurdle or Ash changes his mind (Amanda ) or moves the goalposts on the price then nothing is for certain ..One can report on here in good faith and try and give the lads some hope but if it goes tits up your left with the flack.. happens.
I’m the type that likes to keep the excitement and the hope going so will report on anything I’m told ..usually with a proviso of ” Don’t shoot the messenger ” .

Comment #17Yeah because many people do believe it’s all rubbish as we’ve had 12 years of him. Just some people believe it in hope more than anything. That’s my opinion. If people genuinely believe it then I’d be worried for them but also have some magic beans to sell.
I’ve mentioned to you once, it’s how you sometimes come across when you start talking about it all. When it’s all cryptic, not willing to say exactly what you want to protect someone or W whoever but drop clues like you call it. Then when someone comes to a point of what it could be you then confirm it when you could have just said it straight from the off and moved on.
But yeah, since the staveley affair, any sale talk is just pure crap to me. Like the purest form you can find.

Comment #18Don’t take that as a personal shot, just how it comes across at times.
Bambams often posts snippets here and there but doesn’t come across baiting for want of a better word. I don’t think he gets a lot of stick but I may be corrected on that.
Gets some stick though but that’s a given what with social media, blogs etc. I enjoy giving it my self. 🙂

Comment #23If MA ever wants to copy the blueprint of Spurs than this transfer window becomes very important and the vision that Rafa is currently presenting to him regarding the Academy and upgrade of facilities. This window should be focussed on building a top 8 side and adding 1-2 quality players every transfer window thereafter and blooding up and coming talents into the team. This means fielding a mixed team every now and then in League Cup and FA Cups games for team chemistry, player confidence in case a starting 11 player goes down. Some fan’s might not like the idea of a 2nd strength team in Cup games but this is the only way to get the best out of your Academy apart from loan deals and improving your XI rather than fantasying about Liverpools, Soto, Spurs and Man U’s ability to get youth into the first team
If you refer back to early 2000’s after Bobby Robson’s departure, we became a mid-table team and Tottenham used to be down there with us. Over the years we’ve regressed, bouncing between divisions and avoiding relegation season after season whereas Spurs have progressed to become a top 4 team. Looks to me MA has the vision but Rafa has the imagination to make that vision work

Comment #26RonVanDam, great post marra, If only and all that, just shows what could be done if we had an owner with ambition. Crazy thing is, if he’d had gone down the Spurs (the team he supports) route, the Club would be worth £600m+.
It’s all very sad.

Spurs have done great and come good at just the right time when all the money is involved. It’s amazing that they have only won the league twice in their history. Teams like Villa and Everton have far better histories. Spurs got where they were buying young English talent from the championship and selling them on at a profit, now through Pochettino they produce their own. I don’t think Spurs have a better youth system than their rivals, in fact their youth system is worse than many of the other big teams. The difference is Spurs play their young players. Same can be said of Leeds. We probably have a much better system than Leeds and better players, we just rarely play ours.
If we hadn’t got big injuries in midfield this season, it’s likely Longstaff would have played 1-2 games in the cup and he’d now be available for loan to the championship. When players do hit the jackpot (3-4 injuries in their position) and get a run in the team they then need to be playing at their very best. If Longstaff had an off game on his debut, say he got sent off or scored an own goal then he’d probably never have been played again. I’d love to see us spend money on recruiting youths, even if it is just to loan them out. Chelsea make about £100m a season selling youths they’ve never played, and in most cases never trained or even paid their wages. It’s completely wrong, but if they do it I’d like to see us doing it too. I think buying young championship stars (bowen etc) and foreign youths and loaning them out is the way for us to go. But if Ashley wants out in the next 1-3 years he won’t see the dividends for this type of policy so I can’t see him being interested in long term planning.

If we’d hired the managers and backroom staff Spurs did since Robson, instead of the ones we did, we would be where they are now – or thereabouts. If they’d hired Sounness, Pardew, McClaren, Carver, Kinnear, Wise they’d not be doing so well. Souness alone could destroy any team, even one like Real Madrid. He’s the one manager that inflicted the most damage on us, taking us from top5 to mediocrity while spending an absolute fortune, putting us in debt and putting the old owners under pressure to sell to MA. Robson should have at least been allowed to choose his successor. Anyone but Sounness would have been a good start.
