This may well be the biggest mess Mike Ashley has put Newcastle in during his ill-advised tenure of 12 years as the Newcastle owner.
And that saying something because the owner has managed to put Newcastle in a stranglehold in too many transfer windows.
The Rafa Benitez saga on his new contract is still not concluded – where he will stay or fo, and it doesn’t look like he got much out of Mike Ashley with the process for transfers not being changed much at all according to the Chronicle today.
Mike Ashley, Sheikh Khaled, and Rafa Benitez
Communication was never one of Ashley’s greatest strength, but he’s managed to end up with the current situation:
- We don’t know if we are to be taken over by Sheikh Khaled
- According to the local Chronicle, Ashley is still waiting for an official offer from the Sheikh
- We don’t know the results of the almost endless communication on Rafa’s new contract
- We don’t know if Rafa will stay on as manager and he has only 21 days left on his contract
- The transfer window has been open for a month now, and we have done nothing in it – absolutely nothing
According to the Chronicle today, Mike Ashley has not budged on the transfer process, and Rafa will still need to go to the owner to get permission to buy a player.
That’s what has made things so agonizingly slow in our recruitment of players when it sometimes takes months to buy a player.
And the Chronicle are also reporting today that Rafa will need to sell before he can buy this summer.
But that seems strange to us given that Rafa is reported to have £61M in cash to spend in this coming season’s two transfer windows.
That’s always assuming this mess can be cleared up before August 8th when the window closes.
I say that only in part jest.
Mike Ashley was reported to have met with Rafa in London on Thursday, May 16th and it’s now 24 days later, and we have heard absolutely nothing about the talks from the club.
It’s now two weeks since the news broke that Sheikh Khaled was reported to be acquiring Newcastle and nothing from the club.
Why did somebody not tell Mike Ashley that when you treat your customers like dirt – in this case, the Newcastle fans – you are very unlikely to be successful?
And the customers will not become exactly warm to you.
That’s something Mike Ashley did not learn in management, and when you also have zero leadership skills to go with a distinct lack of management skills, things become complicated and confusing very quickly.
Nobody knows what’s going on.
And we’ve seen that happen with Mike Ashley again and again over 12 years where he’s proved that he’s simply an atrocious owner.
