Allan Saint-Maximin was linked to Newcastle at the end of May. There is a report with very strange timing in Nice Matin that Newcastle are close to agreeing personal terms for the French forward.
The report, however, goes on to say that Newcastle may make an offer of €25M for the Nice forward. It also rather unsurprisingly, in light of recent events, says that Saint-Maximin has softened his stance of playing for a “top” club due to limited interest.
He has also been linked with Everton and Crystal Palace this summer.
Allan Saint-Maximin– agreed personal terms with Newcastle?
While this report does seem laughable with Newcastle now without a manager. It is not completely out of the realm of possibility that maybe there was some contact with Newcastle.
There are two modes of thought on this news regarding this player. Either the player was wanted by Rafa and the club were working towards that end believing that Rafa would eventually cave and sign whatever Ashley offered.
Or that Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley were working on the transfer regardless of Rafa Benitez. This is how the club operated under Alan Pardew and Steve McLaren. They would bring in the players they wanted and the “head coach” would deal with it.
Lest we forget, they tried this under Kevin Keegan and brought in players without his consent. We all know how that turned out.
He soon learned his lesson and only brought in managers who would toe the line. It was only out of desperation that Ashley brought Rafa in.
Ashley would have been just fine with Steve McClaren and a comfortable seventeenth place finish year in and year out. Problem was McClaren was not even able to do that.

Comment #6So can we assume if we’re actively searching for a new manager, takeover talks have been bullshit? Why take on someone for a month or so?

Comment #7The manager tried to hold out and call the owners bluff knowing he had the majority of supporters backing, well when you do this you have to live with the consequences, he should have waited instead of sending an email to the club, if that’s true reading other reports. We all thought he was biding his time waiting to see what happened with the takeover, he jumped the gun and gave the owner what he wanted, bad move.
