The Shields Gazette have reported of a new favorite to be the next Newcastle United manager. Sky Bet have set odds at 3/1 for Roberto Martinez to succeed compatriot Rafa Benitez.
Martinez is currently managing the Belgian national team, a position which he has held since 2016. He has done very well with the golden generation of Belgian talent.
He has plenty of experience in England, despite being just forty-five years of age. He last coached domestically with Everton where he was sacked in 2016 despite heavy backing in the transfer market. Everton spent close to £110m on transfers during his tenure.
He started spectacularly securing a fifth-place finish in his first year in 2014. However, Everton went backward after that with eleventh place finishes the following two seasons.
Roberto Martinez and Garry Monk– I’m telling you Garry, you are no longer the favorite
Prior to joining Everton, Martinez coached at Swansea and at Wigan. Many Newcastle fans may recall that Martinez was Wigan’s manager when Callum McManaman nearly removed Massadio Haidara’s left leg with a horror follow through in 2013. His response to the incident drew some outrage from the Newcastle supporters.
There are no concrete reports linking Martinez to Newcastle and he is just leading the odds at the moment like Garry Monk was on Monday. We will see if anything more comes from this.

Comment #2I liked his Swansea side
He has a spectacular ratio of about 74% with Belgium
(but who wouldn’t)
Has he improved as a manager in his 3 years with Belgium is the big question

Comment #9Martinez wouldn’t be bad. Likes to play attacking football if he can. The key is not standing for too much of Ashley’s horseshit. Under Ashley with a strong capable manager taking over from Rafa’s good work and with 50 60 mill a year to spend plus outgoings, we’d finish mid to upper mid most years but very likely never ever win a thing. A weak manager will mean inevitable relegation at some point, even of course as early as this season.

Venezuela would be the two strikers we won’t be buying Rondon and Hurtado.
Maybe we’ll bid £7.35 for Aguero

Comment #16I am watching USA/France. The only problem is that when the goal was scored the crowd squealed like a pen full of stuck pigs.
If the USA get to the final there will be football fever for 1 match. Happened last time when they won when it was here. I watched in Minneapolis airport and they were all going crazy probably couldn’t name a single member of the team except Mia Hamm and that was probably because she was married to Nomar Garciapara (baseball player).

Merlin Entertainments plc is a British-based company headquartered in Poole, Dorset, which operates 127 attractions, 19 hotels and 7 holiday villages in 27 countries. It is owned by The Blackstone Group and Kirkbi Investments.
*************************
Sorry Jib but that’s wrong again.
Blackstone and Kirkbi have a stake in Merlin. They do not own it. 10% and 30% I believe.
This is a buy out.
According to the Financial Times the largest european buy out in recent times.
Yes, they are part of a consortium buying a company they already part own.
However, that consortium has had to find several billion pounds to do so. Also bring in new investors.
You make out that is easy and NUFC has to be so complicated.
Sorry, but no. Not the case.
Why can’t you accept someone making a point without having to trawl through google in an effort to discredit same.
My point. These deals are not simple, but it is what business folk and corporate lawyers do.
Where there is a will there is a way.

Comment #20You could the best manager in the world but as long as Ashley’s running the show, but as with Rafa, it’d be one step forward then two steps back.
Like some who were so enthused at seeing the prospect of Ashley being bought out, I am losing heart. Ashley’s track record suggests his greed and duplicity are going to sicken BZG to the point it walks away and it’s yet another year of wanton, probably irreparable damage to Newcastle United.
The silence from both camps is disheartening and yet again, Ashley seems to be grinding fans down, grinding us down to the point of acquiescing to whatever he does.
Ashley doesn’t give a chit about football, about ambition, about his public image – he’s a nasty, arrogant specimen and not fit to breath the air he breaths.

Bang on mate.
This dragging it out just lets some of the Rafa anger subside and he has people on social media and will know how divided the fan base is, so there will be a lot of angry talk, some rude songs in the ground but still the Sky money and thousands in the queue for another bite of the big Sh!t sandwich.

Comment #26Of course Lesh is correct but we are only in the first half of a game with extra time. We face possible disappointment when the sale is called off. Then there is the new Manager/Lackey/yes Man/coach that Ashley would hire along with a director of football – Wise? Then there would be the disappointment of no decent signings accompanied by the sale of at least one vital player – Lonstaff, Hayden, Legeune, Schar. Possibly all of them.
If the sale goes through it is likely to be at the 11th hour with no time to sign anyone decent. The excitement might be temepered by who becomes Manager. We don’t know what their ambitions would be and there would be a clamour for Rafa’s return.
We are only at the start of this circus. There is much more to go.

Comment #28Just want to repeat for the millionth time (with no exaggeration) that the club does not owe Ashlie any money.
It’s his club and all of the money is his so how can he possibly owe it to himself, don’t know if it’s already been suggested but HMRC ought to look into his finances!

I shouldn’t have to explain this to a man of your years.
Since the Companies act 1897 an incorporated company

It is a legal person with its own legal personality separate from that
of its shareholders or directors.

Unfortunately, premier league rules stipulate that owners can only put money into clubs in one of two ways :-
A) loans
B) cash for equity
Since Ashley already owns 100% of the shares there no point in equity (equity only makes sense if there are more than one owner)

Yeah Jib that’s why the purchase of Merlin Entertainments is a buy out and not just a transfer of shares.
It has other owners. Even if they hold 30% of the shares that is still nearly 1.5 Billion.
Nearly 5 times what Ashley wants for NUFC.
