Neil covered an article earlier today from the Sun’s David Coverdale who has put out a report saying that both Patrick Vieira and Mikel Arteta have been advised against joining Newcastle by former manager Rafa Benitez.
They were two of our better choices with the news yesterday that Geordie and former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce – an average manager in the Premier league at best – is now the favorite for the job.
Oh my – how far we have already dropped!
Don’t be surprised by that because Lee Charnley has a terrible history of choosing managers – his two former choices were John Carver and Steve McClaren before Rafa was offered to us by his reps.
The first (Carver) almost got us relegated with the final game in 2015 being a 2-0 win against West Ham that saved us.
And we know what happened to McClaren – the job was way over his head from his first day at the club and he has us relegated, and we were in the bottom group all season long.
More misery for Newcastle fans.
But Ashley also wants a manager who will do what he wants him to do (and to obey): Ashley wants to run (I keep misspelling run as “ruin” – strange that) the club in the same unsuccessful manner he has done for 12 years – which is why Rafa had to leave.
Newcastle’s former manager Rafa Benitez – tells the truth
Rafa was never going to be that person long term, and he could take only 39 months of Ashley, and he did great while he was here.
And he had to move to China to try to forget what turned out to be a tragic end to his Newcastle career – but he’s getting well paid there.
Here’s what Coverdale wrote in the Sun today as a refresher:
“Manchester City No.2 Arteta and Nice chief Vieira were on the Toon’s shortlist to succeed Benitez.”
“But SunSport understands Arteta yesterday ruled himself out after speaking to his fellow Spaniard, who criticized those who worked above him at St James’ Park.”
“And Arsenal icon Vieira did the same last week following a similar phone call with the ex-Magpies manager.”
When people approach Rafa for advice, he will willingly odder it to them after 26 years as a coach and as a manager – and a successful one at that.
Rafa left Newcastle because Mike Ashley was not interested in building a top six club and made it clear again and again that he would run a tight ship financially on Tyneside, and limit the transfer money he gave to Rafa.
It should be no shock that Benitez is making people aware the current Newcastle hierarchy are to be avoided, and therefore, it’s not a club to manage with Ashley still the owner.
It looks like we may have to scrape the barrel this summer – and the odds of our being relegated – and maybe in hopeless shape by the end of the year – will only increase while two things continue to happen.
A top manager is not appointed, and Mike Ashley refuses to sell the club.
This is the worst situation we have been in during the 12 years existence of this blog, and even when we relegated twice, we still had some hope.
In 2009 the experienced players banded together to stay and play down below, and Chris Hughton did an excellent job for us but was fired a short seven months after getting Newcastle promoted at the first opportunity.
That’s what Chris got from the owner for promotion – nothing.
Mike Ashley seems to have no idea how to treat people with dignity.
And we had Rafa back in 2015 after our second relegation, and the fans were ecstatic he stayed, even though we had been relegated.
While Ashley continues to treat managers like Keegan, Shearer, Hughton, and now Benitez as trash, the more he will have difficulty in recruiting a new manager anywhere near suitable to manage Newcastle.
Before he completely destroys our club, he must sell, and we should ensure the PL and FA know all about the way he has run this club into the ground for 12 years.
An incompetent owner if ever there was one.
OK – that’s all for now – I hope we all get better news to report soon – but I couldn’t find any today.
I also have to confess about having some grave concerns for Newcastle this coming season unless things change – and change quickly.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Rob I know you would try to discuss the positives of a turd and i admire that I really do but the time has come to give it up my friend.
What have we got to point this is going to end well a couple of spotty nose lads on twitter saying it’s done even though that Darren Carter lad has been saying this since early June
Then we have the planes trains and automobiles come on man give me a break not one bit of evidence of who is on any of these flights.
Ashleys visits to Newcastle must be the club being sold ??? wrong and the imminet approach for agent bruce was being the circumstances around them viists maybe?
The statement through Peter Redding I am sorry if you had done everything a takeover requires and dear mike was such a help BZG will own the club guess what they do not.
Finally with all the above hearsay in mind not one local reporter has reported any deal is even close to be going through, I got stick on here defending Caulkin when he first said Rafa was going to China guess who was correct ? Believe me I would love a takeover to be close but if it was even 3 weeks away from going through or with the PL one of them would know.
As for until I hear a statement from the club I will believe it is ongoing come on people when did thay come out and tell us what happend with Kenyon?? All that will happen from now until the end of the August is Bruce will be appointed one striker of around 25m will be signed to try and calm everybody down (Like Almiron in Jan) and a few loans will come in you will not hear any statement from NUFC on anything BZG until maybe next January when they will suddenly appear again to get us through January.
Sorry for the long post could of just said WE HAVE BEEN HAD AGAIN

Comment #3According to Dean Jones (whoever he is ?) Newcastle United offered former MLS flop Anthony Hudson a ‘coaching role’ at the club last week.
Charnley in overdrive or on crack ?
You can’t just go around offering random coaching jobs to gadgies without asking the manager as he’ll want to bring his own appointments with him or her . Why not her, that would be something.
Charnley needs to do one. Or wise up. Or both.

Comment #6So once again someone doesnt have the funds? Yet they gave a precise date when they showed proof. So either BZG have lied or Ashley is lying through his teeth about everything, or Ashley has asked for more since the original head of terms agreement. This man has no intention to sell unless its some ridiculous deal where he still profits from the club. Why cant the man just die.

Comment #16Why are people saying Ashley said this or that? .. the infuriating thing is he and the club have literally said nothing!
His PR (sources close to the club) seem to be giving tiny bits of non info to selected “journalists” to confuse and delay EVERYTHING

Lesh…
Where has the money gone from television and outgoing transfers then?
Has the infrastructure of the club been updated from that money? NO!
Have we seen a lot of incoming transfers in the region of what EVERY OTHER club in the PL can afford? NO!!
(Here i mean clubs like Bournemouth, West Ham, Brighton etc.. Buying players for 20-40 mil like its the most easy thing to do)
Have we seen players getting better salaries? NO!
Tell me.. The club is the 19th richest in the WORLD.. 6th-7th in the PL!.. How come we have the lowest transfer budget every year?.. How come we have the 4th lowest salary in the PL?
It does not add up at all!

Comment #22Question you need to ask yourselves, is Steve Bruce so utterly stupid and ignorant to the fact that the fans hate him that he’d accept the role of Manager, (sorry, Head Coach), at NUFC?
I guess we’ll see but my money would be No. He’s got a cushy number where he is, the fans don’t loathe him. What reason does he have for moving job now?

Comment #29You can see why Ashley wants Bruce:
– Defensive minded mgr Dolly (or was he Daisy) should be able to hold the goals against down which is essential when you’ve sold all your scorers with no replacements and won’t throw all Rafa’s defensive minded training into the garbage to start completely anew
– Used to working with lower quality players
– Used to relegation scraps
– Was a terrific central defender in his day and bagged several goals as well should be able to get the best out of Schar and Lascelles (arguably all the defenders) currently among the best 5 players on our squad
– he will definitely come and enthusiastically at that
– he’s a Geordie
– he managed Sunderland
Chr*st why didn’t I lay a tenner when he was down at 20/1 he’s Ashley perfect yes and may keep us up… The kind of mgr you want if you are looking to win the race among the bottom 6.
Terrible state of affairs and Bruce is dire idea, only positive is he was a high scoring central defender and great alongside Pallister so will hold our defense together and be able to coach Schar (our top goalscorer). Clearly that’s the idea here, Bruce will hold the defensive line (that his setup) while Ashley waits to get a cheap loan or buy up top

Ashley won’t have taken a penny out of the club. The moneys been coming in and used to run it on the bones of its backside while not bringing in reveue via advertising.
You could say that SD has benefitted from free advertising and merchandising while the club’s had nothing from it.
That’s where the money’s gone.
Its never MAs fault

Comment #32They would all take the job.
Bruce, Moyes, Hughes etc.
As McClaren did.
You see it’s a shot to nothing. If by some miracle it comes off happy days.
If not they get a big pay off and a long holiday come January when they get sacked.
