In a Telegraph report from last night, Luke Edwards confirmed that the draw of the Premier League was the determining factor in Valentino Lazaro’s decision to join Newcastle.
Lazaro’s agent has just confirmed as much in an interview with Sky Sports Austria. Sempre Inter have published the following comment from Hagmayr:
“The decision was not an easy one to make, and it was nothing against Leipzig but it was made rather due to the opportunity to play in the Premier League.”
We would suspect that Hagmayr was also impressed when he watched Newcastle’s late winner against Chelsea on Saturday. He attended that game after initial talks with Newcastle.

No matter what the reason, it looks like Lazaro will be announced at any moment. He’s a player that can definitely get the fans out of their seats.
Hopefully, we’ll see a glimpse of his ability tomorrow in the FA Cup against Oxford where he is likely to make his Newcastle debut in front of a sold-out St James Park.
What Will Be The Result Against Oxford In The Fourth Round Of The FA Cup?
- Win (92%, 4,460 )
- Loss (4%, 213 )
- Draw (4%, 192 )

Comment #4bruce brought bramble not once but twice. to be fair players like bramble are ok in park the bus tactics where all theyre asked to do is head the ball away and theyre defending so deep positioning doesnt matter. id say clark falls into this category too.

Comment #5I just hope that both Bentaleb and Lazaro put the hard defensive work in which is vital for us, we all know that we need more possession and more threat up front, but we have to continue with our solid defensive work, I just hope the new boys will buy into this.

Comment #8Good to have Lazaro if it’s not at the expense of Bowen. Tbh I don’t see Lazaro much better than what we already have. Really want us to go for Bowen now.

Comment #9Complete insult to Clark. Wild comparison.
He is probably the best positional CB we have.
Schar has dodgy positioning but still nothing like Bramble who pretty much had zero awareness of where he and other players were.

Comment #10It’s quite interesting how bloggers get hung up and obsessed
about a player
Jarrod Bowen has been a bit of a sensation in the 2nd tier yet
has never played in the PL or Europe one game in the FA cup
and one in the League cup and folk go on as if he’s the answer
to all our ills.

Comment #14Jib- he’s not the answer but he definitely helps, is of the right age, one of if not the best in the Championship at the minute, loves to attack and drive forward and would add to our team and is English and knows the English style of playing so should adapt easily. Ps. I would rather have hom than see one of our rivals benefit from buying him for the modest price he would cost.

Comment #18to the people saying gypsy isnt an offensive word, youre right if they are a gypsy. but if you say it to someone because theyre irish then it is offensive to some people. anyone with half a brain can see that distinction. and mr tuff youre always calling people thickos, but half youre posts are pretty dumb. how on earth have you managed to come to the conclusion youre a great intellect? is it just because youre not a chav (shyte and scum i believe your catchphrase is) or is it simply because you live in a village? id be intetested to know how youve come to the conclusion that youre not in the lower half of intelligence, because only a ‘thicko’ could arrive at that conclusion.

You write as if Bowen is 33yo journeyman who has never made it.
Bowen has just turned 23, he has so far in his career excelled in the only pro environment he has been in. Fantastic goal record in a mid-table team full of Champ quality players over a period of 3 seasons.
Somebody took umbrage to my comparison the other day, but I’m going to make it again. It’s as good one as you can make given the ages of when they played, positions and his style of play – Perez got 9 goals in 36 Championship matches in a much better team, with a much better manager at the same age playing in the same role(s) as Bowen in our Champ season.
Bowen last 3 seasons Champ stats
42 matches – 12 goals
46 – 22 goals
28 – 16 goals this season
He has been performing at a similar or better strike rate to Perez did in that league since he was 20. If he can come here and be a Perez replacement in terms of goals and work ethic then I’d be happy.
No single player is a panacea. Sure he might flop, everybody might flop, but at £15-20m all things considered it makes sense.Young, hungry, English and even if it didn’t work out, you;re not going to lose much on him given his track record in the Champ.

Comment #23Betty – yes you are right, there’s been a growing tendency for some to vent their anti – mobilist views on here and some are starting to look, well, frankly – caravanist. There I said it. Yes it’s happening – don’t pretend people don’t have strong views on you just because your home has a twin axle, and sneer if you have a gas bottle and need a portable step to get in and out of your front door. This sort of thing has no place in modern society, in the same way as an Elddis Avante on the village green in front of the scout hut.

Comment #24No ideally I want to play him at RWF in a 4-2-3-1, but for the rest of this season I would prefer him to Joelinton.
He has played there on occasion this season for Hull and is used to playing in a counter attacking team.
No insult returned.

I’ve heard it all now.
For someone you massively sing the praises of you’d think you’d know he isn’t suited to a striker role. If we were to sign him he’d have to play wide right as that is where his goals come from. Especially when he comes inside from that flank and ventures into the box off of the left back. Upfront he would get bullied and offer much less then Joelinton in terms of hold up which is exactly what our team needs as we have 9 players back all game.

Comment #26So the agent reckons it was be side he wanted to be in the premier League, not champs league with Leipzig? Hmm.
I think the statement should have said he came to Newcastle because yes, he had an opportunity with Leipzig but if Newcastle are stumping up good cash, and I do well then perhaps in another season I will be off to a top PL club and actually have a proper shout at actually getting a champs league medal.

Comment #28Agree with JP at 14, it’s about time nufc bought a player currently bang in form (albeit in champo). He has as much chance of being a flop as he could be a cracking signing.
Plus he’s English, young enough to develop massively. I’m not going to say he’s going to be the next vardy, however people need to remember he never played in prem before he did with Leicester.
Also I would hate to see him go to Leicester or wolves and develop into a 40 or 50 million player like maddison did. Nobody has a crystal ball

He has played there for Hull this season in about a quarter of his starts and scored goals from there too.
My preference for him ahead of Joelinton speaks to how bad Joleinton has been and our lack of goals from forwards. If he came in he wouldn’t displace Almiron/ASM so I;d drop the underperforming, under pressure Joelinton for him.
Every ST in a system like ours doesn’t need to be a big, burly target man pinned against CBs playing with their back to goal at all times. Something Joelinton does only to variable effect anyway, he’s hardly Rondon. We haven’t got the worst possession stats for no reason.
There are other ways to play the game. Do you not remember the counters when we sat back and played Gayle/Kenedy/Perez together? You let the 3 forward play fluid and break the defensive line with balls into the channel. It;s not like small players can’t lay the ball off either, they just have to be intelligent and elusive instead of pinning themselves to CBs.

None of us know why he decided on us rather than Leipzig, however Austria are in the Euro finals and sitting on either the Inter or Leipzig bench could hamper his chances of playing for them, perhaps a belief that more game time in the PL could help him may be the reason, if so then we’ll done to him as it shows that he will give 100 % to try and impress

Bowen is quite capable of playing that role and has done so many times in his Hull career,
he would be the obvious choice if we don’t get a specialist CF, though not the perfect solution a perfectly obvious one.

Comment #36I will say this about Bowen as my only reservation.
He is an oddly shaped fellow and doesn’t look at all like an elite athlete. Works his knackers off though so not lazy. That would be the main area I would concentrate on, making him stronger and taking advantage of him being naturally thick set.
Genetic barrel like Tevez who was always surprisingly strong.

Comment #37Steve Bruce knows Bowen well, having signed him for Hull from, I think Hereford. I know we all think we’re experts, but I would expect someone of Bruce’s experience to know a good striker when he sees one, even one that hasn’t yet played in the Premier league. For that reason we should sign him ASAP.

Comment #39You can bet your bottom dollar if Lazaro had chosen RBL instead of us the likes of Jail & Bleatin would have lauded it as another sign of our bottom drawer standing.
But when he chooses us Bleatin has this to say…I think the statement should have said he came to Newcastle because yes, he had an opportunity with Leipzig but if Newcastle are stumping up good cash, and I do well then perhaps in another season I will be off to a top PL club and actually have a proper shout at actually getting a champs league medal.
