At the end of the game last night Newcastle United were a well beaten side – but they were also a tired side having been forced to play within 48 hours of their good victory on Sunday against West Ham United.
It was obvious that some of the players ran out of steam – especially in the second half when the young Arsenal side – which was almost a completely different side that demolished Derby County 5-0 on Saturday, raised their game a notch.

Newcastle gave a tremendous rear-guard defensive performance against a brilliant young Arsenal team. But during the last 7 minutes they finally wilted with Arsenal finally getting 2 goals after enormous pressure in the second half.
To be honest, this was a game in which the Newcastle team were outplayed by the Arsenal youngsters, as strange as that may seem – especially in the second half, when Arsenal went into a higher gear.
This was the beautiful game played beautifully by the Arsenal youngsters . It was almost an exhibition by Wenger’s brilliant youngsters.
But nevertheless this will be an extremely disappointing loss to Newcastle and our fans – because this was our best chance to win something – after so long. We will have to put this behind us and come out anew against Manchester City with all guns blazing because even though the team was outplayed tonight – our new players will be be that much better, after this experience.
But hats off to Arsenal – who were better technically than the Newcastle players tonight – where does Wenger get these players from?

After 10 minutes Newcastle had a wonderful chance to go ahead as Enrique sent in a powerful cross and Martins eluded Senderos rather easily to put in a powerful header that forced Fabrienski made a wonderful save.
Then after 16 minutes Arsenal had an even better chance when Bendtner sent in a powerful header which flashed over the crossbar when he really should have scored.
Half time report coming up.

Newcastle United have confirmed this afternoon that Michael Owen will indeed have surgery on his hernia this coming Friday.
As we suggested earlier in the week he will travel to Germany to be operated on by top German surgeon Dr Ulrike Muschaweck.
Dr. Muschaweck’s “Minimal Repair†procedure can allow a player to return to competitive football within two weeks of the operation.
But we have to stress that two weeks is a best case scenario and we don’t expect that to be the case with Owen.

Shay Given will get a rare outing this season when he lines up against Arsenal at the Emirates tonight. Ireland international Given is getting frustrated about his lack of games since proving his fitness a couple of weeks back.
He had a couple of excellent games for Ireland during the International break so it’s not a case of Given having falling off in his form.
It’s the fact that perennial stand-in Steve Harper has come in and given almost faultless performances for Newcastle – making the great save when it has been needed. Steve continued that form against West Ham on Sunday.
