FT: Newcastle Win 2-0 and Owen Scores

A crowd of over 30,00 saw Newcastle easily beat Barnsley tonight with a 2-0 win. Michael Owen scored his first goal for Newcastle since December, 2005 when he slotted home after 57 minutes.

Owner Mike Ashley was again at the game wearing his number 17 Smith shirt.

Oba Martins replaced Owen after 83 minutes minutes and scored a disputed goal after 86 minutes. It looked like Oba may have handled the ball but he rifled home with his right foot after bringing the ball down and turning beautifully. The Barnsley defense seemed frozen in place.

While Michael Owen got the man of the match award because of his goal the best players for Newcastle were Cacapa – who had a wonderful game and never broke sweat. The Brazilian seems destined to become a huge crowd favorite as he plays things so simply and safe. Charles N’Zogbia continued his great form – tonight on the left wing.

We would expect Cacapa to play in central defense on Saturday and he certainly looks a class act. Jose Enrique looked solid at left back but he probably still needs games to get match fit. Not a great game for Newcastle but job done with a win and a clean sheet.

Newcastle go into the draw on Saturday noon for the Carling Cup third round draw. Let’s hope we get a good draw with a home tie.

Full match report follows.

It’s all change for the Newcastle side against Barnsley tonight as full debuts are given to Cacapa and Enrique in this second round Carling Cup tie. Nobby Solano also comes in for his first start at right back in place of the injured Stephen Carr. This is a good chance for Nobby to show Big Sam what he can do at right-back having played a number of outstanding games in that position last season.

Emre also has his first start of the along with Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi up front.

David Edgar and Paul Huntington are among the subs which also include Nicky Butt, Oba Martins and Steve Harper.

NUFC: Shay Given, Nobby Solano, Jose Enrique, Steven Taylor, Cacapa, Charles N’Zogbia, Geremi, Alan Smith, Emre, Michael Owen, Shola Ameobi

Subs: Steve Harper, Oba Martins, Nicky Butt, David Edgar, Paul Huntington

BFC: Heinz Muller, Lewin Nyatanga, Robert Kozluk, Sam Togwell, Miguel Mostto, Grant McCann, Rohan Ricketts, Dennis Souza, Martin Devaney, Dwayne Mattis, Dominik Werling

Subs: Nick Colgan, Robert Atkinson, Kim Christensen, Michael Coulson, Jacob Butterfield

Referee: G Salisbury
Attendance: 30,523

Mike Ashley is a again at the game wearing his number 17 Smith shirt like he was last Sunday. Good to see the owner in attendance again.

5min – Geremi takes a corner and it looks certain that Michael Owen will score as the ball gets through to him six yards from goal, but Michael seems surprised and the ball just hits him and is cleared. It was a chance.

10min – Barnsley attacks down the right and they win a corner as his cross deflects off the side of Enrique. The corner is headed clear by Taylor.
16min – Geremi finds N’Zogbia and the Frenchman puts Owen clear with a good through ball, and Owen is onto the ball but lacks the pace to get clear and shoots too early. The shot is gathered by keeper Muller at the second attempt.

Owen usually would have taken the ball closer to the goal but seemed a little short of pace on this occasion.

21min – N’Zogbia runs at the Barnsley defense and shoots but the shot is blocked for a corner. From the Geremi corner the ball gets to Solano and Nobby shoots from 22 yards and the shot is deflected just wide for a corner.

Newcastle are playing 4-4-2 and although N’Zogbia is wide out left Smith is not hugging the touchline and is drifting inside too much.

The best player on the field after 30 minutes was Claudio Cacapa who was reading the game brilliantly and looked an excellent player with lots of sheer class. We think Cacapa will need to start in central defense from now on so maybe Sam will switch Taylor to right back.

24min – Devaney is booked for a stupid foul on Emre. Geremi sends in the free kick and it needs just the slightest of touches to open the scoring but keeper Muller gets the ball eight yards from goal.

36min – N’Zogbia is busy as usual and in most Newcastle moves and he finds Ameobi at the far post with a nice chip from the left-wing.

39min – Dominik Werling takes a free kick from 25 yards, and Given goes full stretch to clear. It’s an excellent shot from the German and a good save by Shay Given in his first start of the season.

The game is very low tempo which of course suits Barnsley. Newcastle haven’t created any real chances and they seem to be playing too narrow and Smith needs to hug the touchline more.

After one minute of added time the whistle blows for half time. In the second half Newcastle will need to up the tempo to get the result they need. Barnsley have looked quite comfortable in the first half.
52min – Emre comes off after a prearranged time of his first game of the season and is replaced by Nicky Butt.

57min – GOAL – It’s everything Newcastle fans wanted tonight as striker Owen gets clear when put through beautifully by Shola Ameobi and Michael puts the ball under the keeper Muller. Michael seemed a little hesitant which seemed to put Muller off a bit and the ball crept under the goalkeeper. It was a wonderful pass from Shola Ameobi.

This is what the game needed and will do wonders for Owen’s confidence – as he’s back on the goal-scoring charts.

It’s Michael’s first goal for Newcastle since December, 2005 and his first ever goal at the Gallowgate End.

60 mins – Newcastle almost double their lead as Owen sets up Charles N’Zogbia on the edge of the penalty area. The Frenchman’s effort is blocked by Nyatanga who hurls himself to block the effort.

63 mins A cross comes in from Kozluk on the right and it completely eludes Shay Given and the ball shaves the far post as Newcastle are caught sleeping. McCann’s shot from the loose ball is blocked by Steven Taylor. Given looked all at sea with the cross and got nowhere near it.

69 mins – Geremi’s corner bounces in the area ea before N’Zogbia lashes goalwards, it’s Souza again who denies the Magpies as he blocks from amid a crowd of bodies on the edge of the six-yard area.

72 mins – Smith yellow carded for a challenge on Werling but while he appears to take the man he clearly wins the ball.

83 mins – Michael Owen is replaced by Oba Martins. As expected Owen gets a good hand for his goal and Martins gets a huge cheer when he runs on. Oba is a favorite of the crowd, that’s for sure.

86 mins – Oba Martins scores as he brings the ball down with his chest (and seems to handle the ball), pivots and slams the ball home with his right foot while everybody in Barnsley’s defense seems frozen. It’s Oba’s third goal of the season although it looks like a handball which isn’t given by
Solano gets the goal and shoots and Muller saves well. Nobby is still looking for 2 goals to get to 50 for Newcastle United.

David Edgar comes on near the end for his first appearance of the season.

Sounds like Owen is edging ever closer to full match fitness.

Man of the Match performance, a goal, and a clean sheet for the rest of the team. Can’t say fairer than that.

Well done to big pea ov the web for correctly predicting the result and first scorer earlier in the day.

    Haway the lads!!

Didnt watch the game – but interesting BSA decided to go with a 4-4-2 formation.. Maybe he does read this blog at times for inspiration (or whatever you might call it)..

Can somebody comment on how Emre faired in the game? Assume he was rusty from having been out injured the last few months.. or did he provide us with some of the clever passing we have been lacking in recent home games?

What about Enrique? Good, bad, indifferent?

    Against Man U / Chelsea.

roscoe’s team with Smith in for Martins and play 451 with Smudger linking the midfield and attack and dropping back deeper when we lose the ball.

    Top 6 here we come!

I wonder how much the death of Puerta was on the mind of Enrique?
    Did he play well?

Nice to see Mr Owen scoring again.

Oh, and I watched Barcelona absolutely thump Inter Milan tonight 5-0!

    Barcelona look astonishing.
If it wasn’t enough that they have Ronaldinho, Eto’o and Messi, check out Giovanni Dos Santos, and we all know about a certain Mr Henry.
Giovanni looked like a carbon copy of Messi, frightening. He was one of the scorers.
Then add the likes of Deco (wish he’d sign for the Toon), Iniesta, Xavi and Yaya Toure – who scored a 30 yard blinder and was my man of the match – Barca are a very, very special team.

A good win without breaking too much swet. A goal for Owen and Martins and another clean sheet; just what teh doctor ordered.

I hope we sign Faye and Bebe this week, and Solano must be persudaed to stay as he’s a good player, has the right attitude and versatile…..

Roscoe, I like your team buddy but can’t see Owen and Martins starting a game together; i.e. we need a target man like Viduka/Ameobi especially with Zog and Milner on either flank. BSA has to keep 4 very good strikers happy by rotation.
