Sam Pursues Two Africans to Complete Squad

While the game was starting last night fresh rumors were circulating from Sky Sports News that Newcastle were close to getting their long term target Habib Beye from Marseilles.

Sam had been pursing Beye ever since he came in as Newcastle manager and in late June and early July it looked like we were close to getting Beye , but it never materialized and then Beye was quoted as saying he was happy at Marseilles.

Habib Beye – expected to join Newcastle tomorrow

However Sky Sports reported that now Marseilles were rumored to be keen on selling their captain and Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce was said to have approached Marseilles once again early this week for the Senegalese player.

Sam was forced to seek reinforcements after the recent injuries sustained by Stephen Carr and Peter Ramage.

French club’s president Pape Diouf revealed the potential deal last night when he said:

“We are looking to reach an agreement between the two clubs,” “Something should be done within the next 24 hours, it should definitely be done.”

“Habib has been with us for four years, he had said he wanted to leave – but he remained with us.” “However, he has now chosen to accept the offer of Newcastle – once it was put to him.”

When Sam was interviewed after the game last night he confirmed that Abdoulaye Faye from Bolton had undergone a medical yesterday and that Newcastle were waiting the results of that and all being well Faye would sign for Newcastle today.

When asked about Beye, Sam smiled a little and said nothing, and then pretended to look surprised. But Sam does things right and doesn’t say much until the deals are tied up. In fact the club has looked very professional this summer in the way they have gone after players so all credit to Allardyce and Mort there.

If Beye and Faye come in before tomorrow night’s transfer deadline it’s the best piece of summer transfer business in many a year. Assuming we bring in the two Africans these are the nine players Sam has brought in with their costs. Five defenders, three midfielders and one striker (assuming Geremi is a midfielder).

Barton (₤5.8M), Viduka (free), Geremi (free), Rozehnal (₤2.9M), Smith (₤6M), Enrique (₤6.3M), Cacapa (free), Faye (₤2M) and Beye (₤2M). That’s a ₤25M outlay and if you count ₤14M we got for Dyer and Parker then Sam has spent a net of only ₤11M. Great business by the club.

We are assuming Beye will cost ₤2M only because that was the figure being talked about in June. But he has less that one year of his contract left, so it may be less than that. Sam has brought in 3 African players and we already have Oba Martins – and they will all be missing for about a month in January for the Africa’s Cup, so we’ll need to ensure we have enough cover then – which it looks like we will.

In fact there’s going to be a battle at the back for who are the starters and Steven Taylor may have to fight to keep his place, since a back four may well look like – Beye Cacapa Rozehnal Enrique – when things settle down.

Bill – Sam is bringing some great defenders in – at reasonable prices. These guys can play believe me. I’d rather have these than overpriced British players – at least right now. Villa will probably buy Davies soon from West Brom for around 8M – compare that with some of the deals San has done – and these players have real experience.
I’m sure Sam will take care of Taylor – who will still improve – but he’s surrounded by top center-backs – the way Steven looks at things – he’ll say that’s an advantage for him and he’ll be only too willing to fight like hell for his place 😀
Sam seems to have all the players thinking of the team and the squad rather than themselves – that’s great.
