The official Newcastle United site is reporting today that Shay Given will soon enter the top four of the Newcastle United all-time appearance list.
Shay Given – a great servant for Newcastle United Football Club
Shay is just one appearance behind former Irish left back Alf McMichael, who we remember watching in the 1950s. Ald unfortunately passed away in 2006. Dick Keith and McMichael were the two fullbacks in those days – as fans long in the tooth will remember with Ronnie Simpson behind them in goal. Remember Dick Keith’s sliding tackles?
The very popular Given now has 430 appearances for the club, since signing from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 1997. Kenny Dalglish, former manager at Blackburn signed him for £1.5M (what a buy!), and Shay is now just 66 appearances short of fellow goalkeeper Jimmy Lawrence’s Newcastle overall record of 496 total appearances. We think Shay has a good chance of going way over 600 appearances for the the club, if he can just keep fit.
In fact two appearances for Shay in our next two games would see him move into fourth place and level with Bill McCracken.
Here’s the top ten in overall appearances for the Newcastle United club:
Player Years Played Appearances 1 - Jimmy Lawrence 1904-22 496 2 - Frank Hudspeth 1910-29 472 3 - Frank Clark 1962-75 457 4 - Bill McCracken 1904-23 432 5 - Alf McMichael 1949-63 431 6 - Shay Given 1997-now 430 7 - David Craig 1962-78 412 8 - Bobby Mitchell 1949-61 408 9 - Alan Shearer 1996-2006 404 10 - Jackie Milburn 1946-57 397
Doubtless to say, we are very happy to have Shay Given at the club. As well as doing great things for the club Shay does a lot of charity work in the area, with his wife Jane.
Just an overall great lad to have at Newcastle United.
Comments welcome.

Comment #10Yepp Skunk. We were doing quite well with Harper in goal and frankly now all is terrible with Given in goal. Directly pointed to him? Maybe, maybe not.

Comment #11Listened to SuperMac Saturday afternoon and he was asked what he’d do given the job (no I’m not putting him forward lol)
He said:
1st thing get Shay sorted, his confidence back and back to his best again (which I think he is doing anyway)
2nd Get Zog sorted being our best creative and young player at the club.
3rdly tell everyother player they are playing to keep their job @ Toon or play well and have a choice for a move to a club of their choice.
If they din’t McDonald would choose their new club for them!
Very blunt I know but he’s right, maybe I’d keep Taylor too as he seems to be progressing as CB.

Comment #13Chris EM, the geordies are the most passionate fans around and everyone can see its true.I love being a newcastle supporter even though we aint challenging for the title,i have no mates who support newcastle.they follow man u and liverscum ,cuz when at school it was always one or the other.I only know a handful of people who support the toon and love when i get the meet up with them and talk about the most important team in the prem.
I am living in dublin and everytime i have gone ova to newcastle its been magic and what i wouldnt give to live there. So up the toon and i hope the next manager we get realise how blessed he is to sit out there in those crowds of the best fans in the land.

Comment #15I was really hoping for some news on a new manager today.
All the talk and buzz arround the issue doesn’t seems to be as much today.
Do you think we will have someone appointed before stoke game or even have the new manager in the stands to watch the game and in control against bolton?

Comment #17Tez – I couldn’t care less about the Stoke game. Even without a manager we have no excuse for losing. If we do win, then Arsenal will thump us in the next round. And we could do with not playing the next round, because we have Arsenal in the league (away) 2 days later.
Make the right choice for manager. Rushing it because we have Stoke is stupid

Comment #18If it wasn’t for Taylor & Enrique on the line it woulda been 10…Shay handed them the killer 2nd goal!..Sorry, but i really feel the defense is worried by his positioning & kicks!..Hey, i think he’s a great goalkeeper, but he seems to have lost confidence or something this season!..But ,
the shit reffing definitely helped womanchester on their way (C U Next Tuesday)…

Comment #21Anyone think we should buy Dempsey from Fulham if they get relegated?
If a new manager comes in before the end, we need a new centre midfield.
James
Jan 14, 2008 at 4:17 PM
Comment #22No to Dempsey. We need international class players.
Ashley is not back until tomorrow so there will be no decision or serious talks on a manager until then. At the very earliest, we will have a man in place for the Bolton game. No chance of someone being there for Stoke. Pearson will be in charge of that and we will lose.

Comment #26I reckon it will be the morning after the Stoke game when we hear anything, just so the papers cant put a sting in the story “manager loses first game in charge and crashes out of the cup” if we did lose.
Does anyone know where that clip of Keegan being coy today about the job was filmed?

Comment #28Have you exactly seen the two first goals?? Well at least I have and you can´t go around it that Given should have saved both. Stop being objective and just admit he´s been bad this season. And ChrisM I frankly don´t care if we lose 10-0 or 6-0. I want my keeper to prevent us from getting any goals at all !!!

Comment #34Given may well finish top of the list- but not if he signs for Arsenal or Man.Utd!
Almunia’s form would probably prevent a transfer to the Emirates, but Fergie needs a proper replacement.
N’Zogbia linked to Gunners as well-Think it’s all a load of balls really.

Comment #35IS there anyway we can block Johann from commenting. He ONLY EVER comes on to criticize Given or and Sinead who I haven’t seen around in a while, but anyway. It’s really beginning to drive me mad which has led me to this rant. usually I ignore him but he’s really beginning to get on my nerves.
Given’s a legend a really good keeper, he did suffer a major, I don’t know, confidence blow when he got badly hurt against West Ham, and who wouldn’t. Then he was dogged with an injury that was a result of the West Ham injury. He came back and then Sam (don’t know why, ignoring the so called sources reasons) started Harper for a few games. The only games we managed to play well in and when I say we I mean the entire team. From there on in it just got really bad. Nothing to do with Given. He played Shay in the Carling Cup, I think, and he played really well against Arsenal and he played a blinder for Ireland against Germany, I think. Fought his way back in, that and Harper’s shambles against Portsmouth or whoever we lost to by like 5 goals, can’t remember, but anyway. Temporary form thing, what is it, form is temporary class is permanent or something like that.
But between then and Liverpool/Chelsea he was good, but now he’s actually finding his old brilliant form. Ya the second goal wasn’t great, he could have dealt better with the kick, but honestly, he should never of had the ball back to him in the first place and he had to kick it with his weaker left foot. He made up for it anyway by keeping the score under double digits. He could do nothing about the other goals. Nearly all of which were deflections. That was his only flaw in the game.
Anyway he’s been pretty much our best player for the last ten years and deserves to get in the top 5. Great achievement. What a legend.
Oh and can we be sure that Johann and Punk shunk aren’t the same person. Just get over yourself, Given is twice the keeper Harper is, with all due respect to Harper, great lad, I don’t exactly know what your problem is with him. every post you make you criticize him. It’s really childish.
Thats’ better.
