Senegal could only draw tonight with South Africa, and are eliminated from the African Cup of Nations.
Habib Beye – on way home with Faye
Senegal had to at least win tonight to remain in the competition. However, since Tunisia and Angola ended their game 0-0, and were both on 4 points to Senegal’s 1 point before the game – Senegal and South Africa are both eliminated. Even if Senegal had won tonight they would have still been eliminated.
Here’s how the final Group D ended up after the games tonight.
Teams P W D L GF GA GD Points Tunisia 3 1 2 0 5 3 2 5 Angola 3 1 2 0 4 2 2 5 Senegal 3 0 2 1 4 6 -2 2 South Africa 3 0 2 1 3 5 -2 2
That means both Abdoulaye Faye and Habib Beye will be returning home from Ghana, and it remains to be seen to they will be fit enough to start the game against Middlesbrough, at St. James’ Park on Sunday.
Certainly we wouldn’t be surprised if they are flown home in a private jet to speed their recovery but we don’t know if the club are flying them home by private jet, though this would seem to make sense in the circumstances.
Faye started the game tonight but Beye was only a substitute.
Cameroon (Geremi) and Nigeria (Martins) have both qualified for the quarter-finals to be played next Sunday and Monday as follows:
Sunday, 03 February 2008 Ghana v Nigeria
Monday, 04 February 2008 Tunisia v Cameroon

Comment #16GREAT, best news I’ve had all week, Beye and Faye have been our best players all season……
Our wafer thin squad must surely be boosted now that Roz has gone, it’s kinda getting ridiculous when the backroom staff start out-numbering the playing staff……..

Comment #28rozehnal is full of shit, the game against bolton he played in midfield and said he enjoyed it and felt comfortable, then today we hear him whinging that he was being moved about too much and was bitter.TWAT if even HE couldnt see we were thin on the ground and needed the team to pull togther than im pleased hes gone, great team player eh!

Comment #31Interesting, Levante have said this about the Newcastle Bid in regards to that Brazillian CB after saying they accepted NUFC’s bid:
“It seems that they changed their mind since then. They forgot to tell us about it.”
My opinion is that the new 3 executives surely must know that they have t prove their salt, especially because they are getting paid more than some managers and players.
Reports have 99% confirmed we have signed this 17 year old Italian, BUT NUFC.CO.UK are yet to post official word of this…. im holding out hope that these three executives are trying some large transfer coup which will be announced close to the deadline with more than the Italian.
Im hoping anyway.
p.s. i have Guilherme, Valon Behrami, Micah Richrds & Ledley King as my back four in FM 2008…. go on Ashley you know you want to!!

Comment #33keegan saying we dont need players in, but we cant afford to let anyone go because were so thin on the ground then 24 hours later rozehnal is let got = joke and a disgrace as we havent even spent a penny yet for and sort of first team

Comment #34I agree with Carl. He has been pathetic all season, regularly being made to look pedestrian by prem strikers. I know Torres is class, but he made him look like a right twat. 40 odd caps for the Czech rep. You avin a laff?
Have to agree with everyone who is bemused at no new blood though.

Comment #35Is it just me or does Rozenhal play like one of those prancing horses you see in a circus. Hes the only premier league player I’ve ever seen who bottles tackles. We’re well rid of him.
I’m sure we’ll get a replacement signed in time.
