There are several reports today that Newcastle are one side of a number of Premier League clubs chasing Wolves 21 year-old star goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.
Wayne Hennessey – Wolves 6’4″ 21 year-old goalkeeper
The Welsh international, 21, is also interesting Arsenal after a number of impressive displays for both club and country.
Wolves insist publicly that Hennessey is not for sale as Mick McCarthy’s side want automatic promotion next season, but an offer in the region of £8M, said to be imminent from Arsenal, may change their minds.
Why on earth Newcastle would think of bringing in another young goalkeeper when we have two excellent 20 year old young goalkeepers in Fraser Forster and Tim Krul, is anybody’s guess.
And it’s not like there isn’t great competition between Shay Given and Steve Harper next season for the starting goalkeeper’s jersey.
So we think this has to be mis-reporting, since there are other positions Newcastle need to strengthen before we ever consider goalkeeper, where we are very well off.
Arsenal are in need of a good safe goalkeeper as Jens Lehmann will return to Germany on a free this summer, and will leave just Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski as goalkeepers at the London club.
It wouldn’t surprise us if Arsene Wenger puts in a bid for the player.
Hennessey kept 21 clean sheets last season, and another one last night as Wales won in Iceland 1-0, with a great goal from Ched Evans.

Comment #12agree with Heron Mag, Krul is one of the best keepers i have ever seen, we could do with selling Shay to fund some midfield players and bring in Krul, maybe they are going to and that is why they need this lad as additional cover??

Comment #14look at L’pool and Carson, they never anticipated playing the guy. They paid 1M for him, sent him on loan and now want 6-10M, cheeky scousers

Comment #15Agree with most Krull is certainly a No.1 in the future but feel he will want to be involved in the first team squad sooner rather than later or he may want to move on.
Harper must start as No.1 next season and Shay has to accept just as Harper has for many years.
We will see just how committed he is to the club if it happens.

Daft thing is that Carson is thinking along the same lines and the price tag could send his career along a completely different path. They seem to overlook that on most occasions.

Comment #18Further to the Soderberg comments, when he was first signed he was said to be the best keeper in Sweden in his age group, and reckoned to be the next Schmiecal. One thing he would not be lacking is presence in the box as he is a huge kid and still growing.

Comment #19I´m swedish, living in Newcastle. I´m from Gothenburg, the same city as Söderberg, and belive me, he is awsome!
He had been over in toon 3 times during 2 years before he signed, soo they defenetly know he is good enough!
Never seen him play in Newcastle, but in sweden. Remember one game in Gothia cup when it was something 25-1 in shots on goal, and Söderberg still managed to keep the score 0-0. Then in the penalty shout out, who if not Söderberg saves 4 out of 5 and scores the last one him self.
There has been numerus articals about him in swedish press.
I saw lots of reserve team football last year, and Foster I must say is awsome! Krul looks the same, but don´t be suprised if Söderberg shows he is as good! And remember, he is still 17 years old.
Would be stupid to buy another goalkeeper now. Like I say, probly not many here have seen him play, but he will turn out great. A proof must be as I said he´s been over 3 times before from the age of 15, If Newcastle didn´t think he impressed and had the quality to maybe be better than Krul or Foster, why would they bought him?

Comment #20Petworth, I agree on the making money part. The problem is that Carson cost 1m, and if Arsenal are going to table an 8m bid, we’d have to match it. We have more pressing matters than dropping 8m on another backup goalkeeper.

Comment #21Agreed, but I would be astonished if our first major lump of cash went to a back-up keeper.
Just not gonna happen
