Keegan: Top Class Goalkeepers At Newcastle

Not surprisingly Kevin Keegan  is more than happy going into the new season with what he knows are two top class goalkeepers in Shay Given and Steve Harper.

Steve and Shay – pals training together

Shay Given and Steve Harper will fight it out for the first team jersey, but don’t forget we also have two excellent 20 year-olds at the club in hex=ham born Fraser Forster, who has come on a ton over the last two seasons, and top Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul, who has just come out and said how much he loves the Newcastle United club.

Add to these young 18 year-old Swedish star goalkeeper Ole Soderburg, and we’re better off with goalkeepers than at any time in our history – and that would not be an overstatement of the situation.

Irishman Shay Given has returned to pre-season training in top condition, having been training during the summer, after his operation in Munich, Germany, which we trust will end his groin and bowel problems of the last two years.

Harper has also had one of his best spells in the Newcastle goal in his 15 years at the club, playing magnificently for the club in the closing games of the season.

Steve looked what he is – a very safe and top class goalkeeper – he had 4 clean sheets in his final 8 games and was as safe as houses.

In our current poll in poll corner, 66% of our readers think Shay will be number one next season – so if you haven’t already voted, now is your chance.

Kevin talked to nufcTV today about his two senior goalkeepers:

“We have got top class goalkeepers and, as a pair, I’d say Shay and Harps are up there with the best of them in the Premier League,”

“Shay has come back in excellent shape. He started training just as everybody else was finishing and was just about fit to play in the last game of the season.”

“One of the physios has been out to Spain and while he was on holiday he was working so he’s come back very, very fit.”  “And Steve Harper has come back in great condition as well.”

Young Fraser Forster will be challenging them this year along with Tim Krul so in that department we are very healthy.”

Given was again linked with a move to Arsenal during the summer, and the rumors persisted, even though we couldn’t beleive he would ever want to leave Newcastle.

Asked of his Irish goalkeeper’s future, KK gave an emphatic answer.

“All the talk of Shay leaving, you’re going to get that with players because we’re in that crazy summer, as I call it, when the Press are after stories all the time and, of course.”

“They don’t always have to be true stories, it can just be fabricated – an insider was heard to say is a favorite story in the paper at that time of year.”

“But why get rid of a top class player? We’re looking to bring them in to play alongside the ones we’ve already got.”

That’s a surprise – you mean to say some of the stories are actually made up and fabricated in the press?  Well I never.     😀

We should try to get some rough estimate of the percentage of stories made up this summer, which seems to have been a big one for big tales.

The gossip papers were even reporting that Martins was off again to Arsenal because of a release clause in his contract – but that was last year’s story – yet they didn’t change the facts one iota.

Oh well, let’s just hope we sign a couple of defenders within the next week – that will make us happy – but we’re very well off indeed for goalkeepers, that’s for sure.

Comments welcome.

Krul’s height, reach, communication, distribution and decision making make him better than either Harper or Given. Get Krul in now and make him feel wanted. Chelsea weren’t interested for nothing.

We can forget about goalkeepers and strikers, the reason we have so few choices in our selection is because half our squad are either goalkeepers or strikers. Which is only really 3 positions.

Bring in some defenders and midfielders ! they take up 8 positions! and at the moment there is poor first team competition.

Dan..I agree. We have too many keepers. Shay and Harper are great but what’s the point in having the 3 other lads. Like Krul can be good but he’s not going to get near the first team either will Forster and that wee lad we brought in not so long ago. We need to fill out in the mid and defence, we’re fine up front but we seem to struggle in the middle of the field and at the back. I’m all for building up for the future but it’s a more then a wee bit of a joke with the amount of keepers we have. We should sell or at least loan one or two out.

…If he did sign, i’d defo get behind him, ‘cos KK can make players kick on, but he’s defo dropped down since signing for arse for god knows how much, so is he on the wane?..Again, i do believe KK can bring the best out of players tho’!..

Nick id love to know what your basing that on?

Kruls one first team match for us

A few outstanding games in the crappy SPL

Or some second rate reserve matches where a while back Ameobi and Chopra were scoring a hat trick a week.

I hardly see how that makes him better than Given who has been saviour for his club and country for over 10 years or Harper who has been a very good goalkeeper for a long time and would have been capped for England had he been in the first team more.

This sounds like the praise for Edgar and Carroll last season before they got a start and everyone saw that they werent that good after all.

Chinza mentioned before about not blaming ashley cos it is the clubs position and lack of euro football that is hindering us and we dont want mercenaries. Pretty obvious, but it was only the crap managers who bought mercenaries. Kk broke world records to bring the best to the toon. I wont accept your theory. Ashley should half season ticket prices until we reach euro if he goes down that route. You all say hes loaded, well subsidising season tickets wont break the bank. No wonder we are also rans.

seems that keegan thinks forster will be the better goalkeeper, just seemed to add krull in there? that maybe because krull has been injured and keegan hasnt had a chance to see him play properly, im hoping thats the case anyway

Nemo – seems like you have a goldfishes memory too – every 3 seconds you make an anti newcastle statement dressed up with apparent “concern for the club”.

Everyone knows you are a little SPUD, go back to your own blog and peel your tatties and weep.

Stardust, if you dont have any constructive criticism i would advise ed to block you. I am allowed an opinion and ive recieved previous support about my views. I genuinely believe ashley has not got to grips with the importance of spending big as well recruiting youngsters. Im a season ticket holder, are you?

Nemo, I think you missed the point. No matter how much MA or KK have to spend, if certain players choose not to come play for us, and opt for a team with better prospects than we currently have ie European football….then how can we blame MA

No matter how much money any of us have to spend on whatever it is we want, it’s not a good tactic to have your wallet open and bulging when you walk in the shop………. was it 6m or 8m we paid for Boumsong???? Good god! They saw us coming a mile off on that deal.

Have faith…’build it and they will come’

‘Oh well, let’s just hope we sign a couple of defenders within the next week – that will make us happy’

or how about we sign some creative central midfielders which we still lack hugely. defense and centre mid are tha main priorities.
