As we reported last night, the Metz club in France let it be known on their web site, that an agreement had been reached with Newcastle United for their rising young star, 22 year-old defender Sebastien Bassong.
Sebastien Bassong – 22 year old thrilled to be joining Newcastle
And we expected Seb to be thrilled to join the Tyneside club, after spending a week’s trial at the club last week, and obviously impressing enough to get a deal.
Sebastien Bassong has exclusively told setantasports.com just how happy he is to have signed with Newcastle United:
The France Under-21 international said his signing is a deam come true for him, as he told Setanta Sports today:
“I’m content, very satisfied to sign with Newcastle,â€Â  “To be honest, I didn’t expect this to happen, it’s huge for me.”
“No, it’s not a dream come true to me, but it’s impossible to measure how motivated I am.” “The law of competition will show who plays and who doesn’t.”
“I’ll have to adapt during a period of time, I don’t know how long it’s going to take me.” “Nevertheless, I’m ready to sit on the bench if I have to.”
“I will be played at centre back, oh yes.â€
We are very pleased we’ve signed the youngster, because he has all the trademarks of making it in the big time, with certainly a very good and down-to-earth attitude.
We think he may have a chance to push for a left back position, as well as center-back, although we still expect Kevin to bring in a specialized left back before August 31st comes around.
Seb will be more one for the future, with probably limited play in his first season, but these are exactly the type of players we need to sign to augment our squad, but he will not be one of the top four signings Kevin has talked about.
We expect something on the Newcastle United web-site today about Seb having joined the club.
Comments welcome.

Comment #5Yeah – now for Coloccini (fingers crossed, although I can’t help but feel pessimistic) and a striker and we’re good to go. Anything on top of that would be a well appreciated bonus – a left back and a top drawer creative midfielder perhaps?

Comment #6I will still wait until it is confirmed from the official site, however, he will be a welcome signing to the squad. It would be good to have a season where we cant blame the defence!

Comment #10England U 21 – 23yrs of age…..£17 million.
French U21 – 22 yrs of age….£2 million.
Bentley / Bassong. Different positions I know….but what exactly has Bentley done to warrant a fee of £17 million? And commentators wonder why managers / scouts look abroad?

Comment #13well said doug! i’ll be livid if fulham spend £15m & get Gomez! the only think that would cure that would us spending £10m + on Ashton or dare i dream £30m on Berbatov! mind u i have a sneaky feelin that KK could still fancy Henry, think a cheeky £15m bid would get him! i’d love van nis too but dont see that happening! mind u all of these are a bit unrealistic! but u never know?

Comment #14With Bassong in and Coloccini hopefully on his way, I think that our defence will be at its strongest for some time.
Taylor (CB, FB) , Faye (CB), Coloccini (?) (CB, FB), Beye (FB, CB), Enrique (FB), Bassong (CB, FB). With Edgar as back up and the likes of Tozer and others coming through the ranks, for the first time in years we could have a half decent back 4!
Mind you – the way Keegan likes to play, 3 of them will be just outside the oppositions box for most of the games!

Comment #19WIGAZ……there is no way we would spend £15 million on a 32 year old and I wouldn’t want us to . Henry has, according to Talk Sports Spanish correspondant, been told by Pepi Guardiola that he will be Barca’s man striker this season – something he wasn’t last season.

Comment #24JOeT – at least he’s realistic about the prospect of getting immediate 1st team football – unlike his Frenchy mate Zog.
He realises that he may have to wait until he gets his chance as there are more experienced players infront of him. But I bet he’ll be breathing down their necks during training.
Its good to see a frenchman that actually “wants” to play for the club!

Comment #34JoeT the nufcblog hard man. Ha ha.
If this has happened it’s a good move for the club. The price is right and the lad’s attitude is spot on. Of course it’s not a dream move, it would be like one of us playing for Chelsea, top club, good money, you’d join in a heartbeat, but we’d really want to be playing for NUFC.

Comment #39Come on now get another quality CB in. Hope to hear something about Collocini, but it looks like other transfer deals that have not gone through tho’ (Aimar, Modric, …).
I think this lad knows exactly that he has to learn so much more and that he will not be a starter but that he will do anything to get into the team. That is the way all players should be, willing to fight to get in the team and not take it for granted that they should play friom the first till the last game. Taylor should take an example to this guy, cause Taylor also needs to learn so much more, but he thinks he is our best defender. If we sign Collocini (I really hope so) it will be very tough competition for the CB’s.
My first choice would be:
Collocini – Faye (or even Cacapa)

Comment #40His arrival means we are not going for Colo anymore?
I read stenta that his agent called us to look for another defender(bassong?) coz he knows that we cant afford him.
Gosh!
