It’s looking more and more like Newcastle United have indeed offered their captain Michael Owen an improved contract, to stay another three years at the club.
Michael Owen – yes – I’ve got a new contract
Indeed a Newcastle spokesman is quoted in reputable news channels, such as Sky Sports, that Michael has been offered a new contract.
A Newcastle United spokesman is quoted as saying:
“Newcastle United can confirm that captain Michael Owen has been offered an extended and improved three-year contract.”
“The proposed terms of the new deal include an increased salary for Michael and demonstrate the club’s commitment to keeping him.”
“The club hopes that this enhanced contract offer will keep him at St James’ Park.”
We were dubious this morning of this report until the club said something, and usually they report these things on the official web-site, and there’s nothing on the site.
But this may be an accurate report and if it is, we think that’s great. Michael Owen is probably not worth £120K/week because of his play on the field the last three years.
However, we think he is worth the money overall, because he is the face of Newcastle United, just like Alan Shearer was before him. Not to mention Kevin has already pointed to him as being his key player, and he is now captain of the club, and doing very well in that position.
The Americans don’t know too much about football (soccer) but when you mentioned Alan Shearer to them, they knew who he was and most knew he played for Newcastle United – and if you mentioned Newcastle they knew, at least, that’s who Alan played for. They also are very aware of Newcastle Brown Ale, which is one of the most popular beers over here. 😀
If this is true on Michael’s contract, this will be an improvement on his current contract, and it will make Michael an even richer young man, but he’ll be worth every penny if he can score goals the way Alan Shearer.
So we are very pleased about this, as will Kevin Keegan – if it is true.
Comments welcome.

Comment #13Yet again all the papers report that Owen has turned down a one year reduced salary offer and suddenly the truth emerges from NUFC. How much more convincing do our supporters need before they understand that a prolonged attempt is being made to undermine everything good that is going on at NUFC.Sadly I think all this negative reporting and blatsnt lie telling is having an adverse effect on our attempts to sign good quality players as they seem to believe that the place is unstable.

Comment #14The question has to be “Why would MO want a new contract at SJP”??
He can see out his contract, sort out his final club in January, walk away at the end of the season and bank a substantial “Signing On” fee.
He will have no problem finding a club who have a demonstrated ambition to achieve, who are bringing in new players to try and make inroads towards silverware and european competition.
If you were in his position, why stay at SJP??
Its a shocking thing to have to think about, but at this moment in time, its the reality of Newcastle United Football Club. My heart bleeds.

Comment #24The fact is we’ve shown our ambition to keep a player like Owen. The club can’t win here I feel. They offer big player wages and the media / fans say it’s disgraceful, they don’t and people say we lack ambition. We MUST keep Owen. He will be so important this season, even if he does leave.

Comment #32What is going on my heed is about to explode!!!
First Owen gets a reduced offer for a contract then he gets a pay increase for what exactly? next Zayette is about to sign then he’s about to sign for someone else. Then Krul is about to leave for Feyenoord. Sentanta sports and Sky Sports are taking the piss out of us fans. These rumours have to end soon. Hurry up the deadline.

Comment #36I can understand Lennon being a Keegan player. He is very direct and is still improving, like Milner.
Lennon needs a change of clubs, he appears to becoming stale and if he ends up here, i wouldnt be too disappointed. However i dont think we would have moved forward a great deal from where we were with Milner in the team.
Lets see !
