There’s a lot of second guessing about whether Kinnear should have played Seb Bassong, or even Habib Beye, at center-back instead of Cacapa, who played very poorly, but it’s so easy in retrospect, when you look back at what happened.
Steven Taylor – was ruled out of game with sore groin
And Joe revealed today that he and the Newcastle staff think Cacapa is the better player of the two.
Joe talked to the Evening Chronicle today:
“I wouldn’t have said I would have done things differently, because I sat down with everybody concerned and the options weren’t there.”
“I wanted Taylor to play – there’s no doubt about that. We left it until as late as possible to put him in the side, but he pulled out.” “He was still feeling his groin, and we had to make a decision.”
“I know there’s Bassong, but it’s easy to say that after the event.” “We feel amongst ourselves that Cacapa is the better player of the two, but he didn’t have an exceptionally good game, and the first goal was an error on his part.”
Kinnear says that Cacapa was fouled before Coloccini gave away the penalty in the 65th minute, but that was only one of many incidents that happened, with Newcastle giving away both goals, and Shola’s goal clearly offside.
And the faithful Newcastle supporters couldn’t quite understand why Jonas was substituted for Michael Owen, and maybe Damien Diuff would have been the player to replace.
Joe continued and talked about Jonas:
“He did all right. We just wanted to get all three strikers on and go 4-3-3, with Damien Duff breaking in there.”
“I thought Gutierrez played in and out. A lot of times he lost possession instead of playing the ball early.”
Joe’s right there in that Jonas didn’t have one of his best games for the club. Newcastle are showing some good and even conistent form at home, which is why we think we’ll beat Wigan Athletic next Saturday, but our away form is poor to say the least, and it’s now 9 league games without a win, away from home.
We’re not sure we can change that much at Chelsea a week on Saturday, after which we may know what will happen to the club, and that would be good.

Comment #41Coloccini AND Cacapa were both to blame. Cacapa let AJ pass him way too easily, and Coloccini made a rash tackle in the box. Both are mistakes.
In Coloccini’s defence, i dont think he would have made such a challenge if he knew AJ has a habit of trying to win those sort of penalties in the box. He will learn how to defend against each time through out the year and will be much improved next season.

Comment #42Well to be fair, Coloccini flew in there clumsily. He didn’t have to go in the way he did.

Comment #48Tom Toon, I’ve got to say Colo looked to blame to me too. I thought both goals were given away by both of our centre backs.

Comment #51i wouldnt blame cacapa or colo for the pen, the ref should have called the foul on cacapa, he was clearly shoved by AJ and should have had a free kick. i agree he had a howler of a game, but wen was the lsat time he played for us? considerin how gr8 he started for us wen we bought him he hasnt played that much since he had one bad game last yr. players nd time to gel and they dont nd the supporters screaming how shit they are at them. u all want to see newcastle become gr8 again then y not get off ur high horses and actually support the team? nobodies perfect and were gonna hav a few howlers this yr, who doesnt? so get on with supporting this gr8 club!

Comment #52In games which Cacapa has played, he has been caught high numerous times and doesnt have the legs to recover.
This in turn effects his CD partner who has to adapt his game accordingly, which in turn can make him look bad, exactly what accured Sun.

Comment #54Coloccini made the challenge that conceded the penalty, it was a fair bit more hurried and clumsy than most of his tackles throughout the match. Tom, if it was Steven Taylor who made the tackle then you’d have been all over his back.

Comment #55coloccini is pretty shit really isnt he. I remember saying he was pants when you bought him and tom toon was saying he was world class. Thats what happens young tom when you base your knowledge of a player on youtube.
Also Guthrie is looking shite. I remember a few people saying he was potentially world class and they would rather have him than modric. Tom toon agaiin as i recall. haha

Comment #56Erm I have never once said an NUFC player is world class because they are simply not and at the time I did say i’d rather have Guthrie as he was performing great at the time and Modric was performing poorly.
Coloccini is a class act and has been great for us this season, you saying he has been shite shows you have not really watched us.
As for Alan oliver, my mate, also a nobody, like Alan Oliver summed up Spurs fans a treat when he said ‘they are all pr!cks!’.

Comment #57Cacapa may have needed Joe’s vote of confidence but the way it was delivered (‘but to say he was the better player of the two’ [Bassong being the second] is hardly going to give young Bassong a lift?
C’mon Joe, wake up and for goodness sake think about waht you’re going to say qnd the impact of your words before you say ’em!

Comment #60Colo’s not a bad player, i was telling my mate this yesterday. Vidic looked poor in the beginning, but because he was part of a strong experienced defence he had time to settle in and not be criticized too much for any mistakes because they were covered. Now most times its bad, with beye being our most consistent defender, but taylor is young, collocini new and foreign speaking and enrique young and foreign. Now yesterday that was even worse, because cacapa is foreign and hadn’t played for a while.
Now if we give it time, these players will have some howlers and make mistakes but as long as we have a consistent back 4 which we were starting to until yesterday then it’ll work out.
Also Guthrie is a tidy player just again young and gonna make mistakes.
Get Behind The Team.

Comment #66to me it’s Joe’s fault. His tactics was awful. Cacapa was playing so bad he’d be changed for Bassong at the break, Guttrie for Butt, even MO for Ameobi. Even Beye could do the job at CB with Geremi as RB. Jonas should just stayed & we’d have got something out of the game.
yeah i wanna see Joe talks less & just to do his job that’s winning games for us..please.

but one loss & we think we’re shite…
…A little perspective Lads!..
…They got a ‘very’ lucky goal & a ‘very’ dodgey pen, by a known diver…Did they even have one other shot on goal?..Yes, we didn’t create enough chances, but Enriques ball to Owen at the death should’ve yielded an equalizer…It’s a thin line between a loss & a draw here!..

Comment #72Everyone needs to get real, we are in the bottom three because we deserve to be there . WE have too many poor ordinary players who alot of people rave about on here. We have Given,Barton,Jonas,Owen and maybe Martins. The rest are either past it (duff, butt), under performers (collicinni,N’zogbia,enrique,Beye-This season) of average (Taylor, ameobi). I By the way i do think taylor and n’zogbia could become really good but seem as though they have been pushed into a team that is too weak for them to progress and develop into better players. I am very dissapointed as i believe i really enjoyed the aston villa game, and believed all of our players played at a good level in the second half, but maybe they havent enough inside themselves to play like that every week. I suppose all of the above doesnt make a difference anyway because next week i will be at the game thinking we will hammer wigan, and maybe this is the week when we turn things around!!!!

Comment #73Reading that back my english seems to be appalling, I meant to say i rate Given,Barton, Jonas, Owen and martins. The rest are average in my opinion. And if we dont invest in january we will be in the same position as we are today.

Enrique made two or three deadly crosses in the second half, but just because no one got on the end of them he doesn’t get recognition for it. Enrique has a great long pass on him, we just need to get him more consistent.
