There’s a lot of second guessing about whether Kinnear should have played Seb Bassong, or even Habib Beye, at center-back instead of Cacapa, who played very poorly, but it’s so easy in retrospect, when you look back at what happened.
Steven Taylor – was ruled out of game with sore groin
And Joe revealed today that he and the Newcastle staff think Cacapa is the better player of the two.
Joe talked to the Evening Chronicle today:
“I wouldn’t have said I would have done things differently, because I sat down with everybody concerned and the options weren’t there.”
“I wanted Taylor to play – there’s no doubt about that. We left it until as late as possible to put him in the side, but he pulled out.” “He was still feeling his groin, and we had to make a decision.”
“I know there’s Bassong, but it’s easy to say that after the event.” “We feel amongst ourselves that Cacapa is the better player of the two, but he didn’t have an exceptionally good game, and the first goal was an error on his part.”
Kinnear says that Cacapa was fouled before Coloccini gave away the penalty in the 65th minute, but that was only one of many incidents that happened, with Newcastle giving away both goals, and Shola’s goal clearly offside.
And the faithful Newcastle supporters couldn’t quite understand why Jonas was substituted for Michael Owen, and maybe Damien Diuff would have been the player to replace.
Joe continued and talked about Jonas:
“He did all right. We just wanted to get all three strikers on and go 4-3-3, with Damien Duff breaking in there.”
“I thought Gutierrez played in and out. A lot of times he lost possession instead of playing the ball early.”
Joe’s right there in that Jonas didn’t have one of his best games for the club. Newcastle are showing some good and even conistent form at home, which is why we think we’ll beat Wigan Athletic next Saturday, but our away form is poor to say the least, and it’s now 9 league games without a win, away from home.
We’re not sure we can change that much at Chelsea a week on Saturday, after which we may know what will happen to the club, and that would be good.

Comment #81Enrique is a bit of an enigma, makes a good run, pass etc., then next minute either gives it away or sends it out of play with a bad pass.
Flatters to decieve.
I also think he lacks pace and is a defensive liability.
6m. was a lot to pay for a prospect, we could have had a proven defender for that kind of money.
Sell !

Comment #83Joe would be wrong. Kind of like how he apparently thinks that Butt is better than Barton as a DM and Barton is better than Zog as an AM. Or that Shola is better than Owen, or Carroll for that matter.

Comment #84how can anyone actually even argue that the penatly wasnt colos fault, he fouled johnson and gave away the penalty, its fact that it was his fault, as sh*t as cacpa was before that it was colos fault they got the penalty and thts that, theres nothing to debate

Comment #91Cacapa has never looked anything but a bit rubbish IMHO. I’ve seen him have one decent game I think, the rest of the time he’s looked well out of his depth.
Butt can be class when he’s on form but Guthrie has looked far more consistent this season. However isn’t Guthrie more of an attacking midfielder and should be competing for Barton’s place?
Bassong’s a really good prospect for the future and even if he and Cacapa were about even (which they are not) then I’d pick Bassong first. I groan every time I see that goatee beardy no hoper on the team sheet.

Comment #93did no1 see the colo challenge….he made contact with the ball….so johnson should stop bein such a nansy pantsy homosexual…..it was a fair challenge, football has turned into a very gay sport and i find it weird how for a cotnact sport, when contact is made people who are getting paid thousands a week for playing it roll around like a pig in the mud

Comment #94something which is erking me is that people are dogging down duff and ameobi all the time, they are doing well for us and so lets not be fickle because there are some who shy away from our situation they have jumped
i think kinear is using players he knows wont give up. duff or nzogbia, well i have no doubt that charlie is the better player but not playing in a team which is doing badly.
ameobi well he has shown his worth in recent games, which i always said he would to people sat around me at the football they always gave me greef, im just a bit smug about it at the moment, oh hoping it will last- knowing it will not

Comment #97I’ve yet to see Cacapa have a competent performance for the toon. He, like me is past his sell by date and Bassong should always get the nod ahead of him.

Comment #99Just want to remind the rest of us that Cacapa and Nicky Butt are OLD players – i repeat OLD OLD players. No matter how good they are, they only get get the maximum a year or two for them.
Guthrie, Bassong, Zoggy….Young and Better players.

Comment #102Football fans are so fickle, we win a game were going to the champions league, we lose a games its the championship for us…..
Everybody needs to shut the f*ck up and stop whinning like babies. We deserved a draw on sun but sadly it wasnt meant to be. Our starting CB (taylor) got injured and the old man who came in didnt do the job. I think Bassong should have got the nod but thats JK call and he lives and dies by the results.
What I dont like about JK is him playing favourites. Everyone can see that Duff never gets subbed even though he looks like he is blowing out of his arse, when you have a talent like zog on the bench….We only made one sub when carrol, zog or guthrie may have changed the game….All young and hungry…..
And Ameobi is the other JK favourite who was never coming off even though he did f*ck all for towards the end of the game….

Comment #103How can you call Cacapa’s performance 20:20 hindsight after his display against Pompey. It was obvious what was going to happen. Just as obvious as what will happen if he starts again. He does not have a future in the EPL.
mackems are gross to look at

Comment #104Hindsight Joe? Really? You obviously haven’t done any homework whatsoever or you’d know he cost us 4 goals in 15 minutes against Pompey last year.

Comment #106Also i find it funny arguing over Butt or Guthrie, Cacapa or Bassong. All of them are hopeless really. Our midfield is full of dull slow un inventive hacks. While Guthrie and Bassong show some promise they are not the calibre of player that i want in my club. none of them.
