Joe Kinnear has today said he is now quite optimistic about the chances of the club persuading Michael Owen to stay at Newcastle United – and that has to be good news.
Newcastle manager and captain – staying together?
Joe apparently spent more than an hour discussing the three-year deal for his captain at the club’s training ground yesterday. The contract has been offered to Michael as have new contracts to Butt, Ameobi and Harper.
Kinnear told the Shields Gazette this morning:
“I spent more than an hour with him a couple of days ago. He’s had what I consider to be a very good offer.”
“It’s three years, and that would bring him up to the age of 32.” “I’m optimistic. I’m more optimistic having spent that amount of time with him.”
“He will get together with his agent now and come back to me. We’ll certainly find out in the next two or three days.”
“I would prefer to have Michael Owen than any amount of cash. He’s fit and well, scoring goals, and looking a real threat.”
The signs are certainly that Michael indeed would like to stay at the club, but we have no idea how his latest contract offer compares to the one he is on right now. Papers yesterday said it was £90K/week, but they also said it was a 4 year deal, so that information is probably completely inaccurate.
But we’d love for Michael to sign the new contract this month – and we think he could do that and show his commitment to the famous Newcastle United club, with the best fans in the world.
Joe seems to think we’ll get an answer sometime at the end of the week, and that would be great, especially if it’s a yes.
Comments welcome.

Come and play for the mighty spurs and i will get you in the england squad Mikey. Luca , lennon and bentley will set you up and you will have the added bonus of playing in europe and a chance of silverware.

Comment #4dont want to go cracking the shampagne yet but this is a good feedback, i like it. this would be great news if it was announced before the big game on sunday. the team would be buoyed to know that their captain, the best most lethal englaish stricker bare none has signed on again. they’d be buzzing.

Spurs suck end of story.
Great news if Owen stays be intersting to see who JK brings in during the Window.
Realistically only Man City could afford Owen’s wages…I think he is too rich for the the Villa,Everton and especially errr Wigan.

Comment #11AO:- Your team is in the same amount of schtuck we are in so Owen wont be jumping from the frying pan into the fire workid. If he did go he would be goto a club like Villa etc but at the end of the day we have stuck by him and shown him a massive amount of loyalty and patenice and he will be doing the same for us the club who saved his career. Nice try bonny lad !

i saw the man u game for a 17 mill signing, the “next” johan cryuff he should have had some impact against man u but i saw him giving one through ball a header missed around 10 yards thats it……
he is doing what guthrie is doing for us…..thats why i said after the nufc game u should go a game without modric and play a standard 4-4-2…..
u would see it is a better formation coz pavlyuchenko and bent need some one up front to support them and modric is not as threatning

Comment #14hammy14- owen wont show you any loyalty! You were the only team stupid enough to pay his wages and 17 mill for him. He had no other options. If liverpool come in for him dont think for 1 second he will show the club or fans any loyalty.

Comment #15In the way Ramos went for each and every one of our reported targets last summer, i wouldn’t be surprised if he tried for a Owen return to Real Madrid.
Hope he signs tho. when hes fit, hes world class as proven by his goals to games ratio. just wish he fit more often than not.

Comment #16Time will tell with MO….I’m not going to believe anything until the club or MO make an official statement. My heart says he will stay; my head says he will leave; but again none of us know what he has or hasnt been offered. I still believe we are the perfect club for MO and from what i do know is that he was never keen on moving to London. He has a house up here now and his kids go to school up here so that has to be a positive.
To sunday…Huge game for newcastle and spurs and i think it’s completely winnable. Wodgate is def out injured, not sure about King and bent is also rated highly doubtfull. On the other hand Oba might be missing. I’m going to go with a 3-1 win to the toon as per the last two league games at ST. James.
To AO…
Modric 15 million ? Was that about correct? I think spurs have been mugged there! I’m a big fan of Bentley but he has simply not done it for you either! You bought roman for 12 million to? Thats approx 40 million for the three if i’m not mistaken….Can you honestly tell me they have improved spurs this season? Would you have rather kept Keane & Berbatov than brought in those three? If Harry has to sell before he can buy (which is what daniel Levy stated at the last spurs AGM) then i think all three off these players wouldnt be too far short on his list…

Comment #19AO:- and you where the only team stupid enough to pay the amount of money the yids did for darren bent so newcastle and spurs are both upto their eyes in it as you say we are on the same points as you what makes spuds an arrtractive option? belive you me my friend he will be staying and am sure as a loyal spuds fan as yourself will be at SJP to see owen knock a couple past your lot. Owen does have ties with liverpool and i could see him going there should he did reject our offer as it makes sence he is worhsipped down there like he is here. As before nice try bonny lad !

Comment #22kevin n- modric has looked good since harry came in and i think he will justify his price tag when we have a proper defensive midfielder next to him. Spurs still have the berbatov and keane money to spend! Levy is hardly going to tell everyone how much harry has to spend. hughes at city has already stated city will have to pay over the odds for players, effectivly setting them up to get ripped off.Only an idiot would say how much there manager has to spend.
Spurs did spend a lot in the summer but if they win the league cup again and qualify for europe it will be money well spent. I would much prefer we spend loads and try to compete than spend 10 mill and hope for a top 10 finish.

Comment #26“I would much prefer we spend loads and try to compete than spend 10 mill and hope for a top 10 finish.”
That is a fair point. However, the amount you spend does not necessarily determine whether you “compete” or not, Everton over the last few seasons stand testimony to that.

Comment #28tomturantoon- but they didnt buy him on currant prem form. he is still young and will get his form back. Unlike an ageing duff who is finished. As i said before if you want to win trophies you have to spend the money. Some signings work out better than others.
Hammy- west ham offered more money for bent who is still young and banging the goals in. Owen is a constantly crocked 29 year old who has never scored more than 20 in a season. Nice attempt though.

u spend 150 mill euros to qualify for uefa cup
(thats money already spent + money from berba and keane transfer)
and not y ur league finish but by winning a knock out championship…..
and you say its worth it…..
by this money u should have by now set the world alight…. not going for a trophy where top teams field in their youth team players

Comment #32spyro- spurs were trying to break into the top 4 and you wont do that by spending a few pennies in the transfer market. Had berbatov and keane not left at the last minute i think we would be right up there.
Everton are one of the most boringly negative sides in the league who will never have any success in my opinion.

Comment #33Dont get me wrong AO…If Newcastle were spending 15mil on 1 player and buying 2 or 3 of those id be delighted! Im a realist and know that we are a million miles away from challenging the top 4 and to do exactly that you have to spend big money! But spurs, like Newcastle, villa and everton are all going to be paying over the odds for players the top 4 dont want. Bently at 15mil is a joke! 12mil for milner! Overpriced and both not good enough! Football is becoming predictable at the top end to its detriment

Comment #34During the summer you were all complaining that ashley wasnt spending any money whilst spurs were. Would you rather ashley didnt spend big and you continued to be in relegation scraps or would you rather at least have a go. You will never break the top 4 and are settling as a team of also rans if you dont at least try to match the big boys in the transfer market.

Nobody on here even has the slightest interest in spurs..you are a small London club and fall into the same category as the Hammers,Fulham etc in other words irrelevant in football terms.
Your club will never compete with chelsea and arsenal…just love watching you lot waste money it really does make my day.

Comment #39I agree with you about Evertons’ style of play, but what they have achieved whilst spending very little deserves credit.
I was not one of those who complained about how much MA was spending. I do not care if a player cost 1million or 10million, all i care about is how they play on the pitch. Gutierrez, Bassong and Guthre all have a combined total of around 5million, but they have all been singled out by pundits etc several times and their quality is undeniable.
