Edgar Hoping to Start Again Sunday At Spurs

There are a number of youngsters hoping they will start for this Sunday’s game at Spurs, and one of those is our 21 year-old Canadian defender David Edgar.

David Edgar – hoping to start again Sunday at Spurs

Shearer talked to Newcastle United TV this morning about David’s game last Saturday:

“Stoke was a huge game for David because obviously I’d left (Fabricio) Coloccini out,” “But David came in and proved a point and had a terrific game.”

“Again, he’s said to me that he wants to play a huge part.” “So the more we can have of performances like that the better it will be for everyone.”

Since Alan arrived on the scene a couple of weeks ago, it certainly looks like he’s looking for players with the passion he wants to see. Local lads provide that of course, but also players who have been brought up in the Academy like David, who Shearer knows from his time playing at the club, also have an inbuilt passion for the club.

Certainly David had a very solid game indeed last week, and we’d like to see the lad given more chances, because he always seems to produce, and his attitude is just first class.

But there’s big competition for places for the Sunday game at Spurs, with Steven Taylor returning from his ankle injury.  And it seems there will be even more competition for the game at home against Portsmouth, with Joey Barton and Jose Enrique both fit for that game.

But competition is exactly what we need right now, and something we just haven’t had enough of this season, because of all the injuries.

And thinking of the Portsmouth game, which will be a week on Monday (8:00 pm kick off), we just have to get 3 points from that game!    There are three things we must do over the last 6 games:

  • Win games
  • Win games
  • Win games

In that order. 😀

Comments always welcome.

Do we have anyone else that can actually play leftback? I’m glad that Edgar has been given his chance, hope he gets rewarded with a new contract.

Enrique, Edgar, Bassong and Ryan Taylor are all capable at left back. Duffer’s even had a stab at it, though he’s not ideal in that position.

Sorry, I meant that are available. Bassong should play CB, Duff is too attacking, and R Taylor is a RB I thought.

Good squad player, although I’m not comfortable with him starting a string of games. If he’s happy being a bench warmer he should be given a new contract.
