Alan Shearer has come out today and paid tribute to two of our best players, Habib Beye and Sebastien Bassong, who will most probably be at the heart of the Newcastle defense tonight, against Portsmouth.
Sebastien Bassong – player of the season for Newcastle?
Beye was injured for almost three months after a terrible challenge by Wigan’s Lee Cattermole on Boxing Day, for which he is still waiting for an apology, we may add.
Habib then returned as a substitute in the 3-1 home defeat by Arsenal on March 21, and has been in the side ever since, and has even played in central defense with 22 year-old Seb Bassong, and played very well there.
Beye did play for Marseilles on occasion at center-back and he seems used to that position, and Shearer is playing the Senegal International there, due to the poor form of Coloccini, and the injury to Steven Taylor.
But, as we reported yesterday, Shearer has been impressed with Beye’s efforts in difficult circumstances, both as a player and a leader:
“He’s played well whenever he’s been out there – I’ve been very impressed with him.” “He’s got a great attitude, and I like what I’ve seen. He has been brilliant.”
“He is a really, really top professional, a really good athlete, and the games he has played in, he has done very well.”
“We will be looking for more of the same from him in the remaining games. He has great experience.”
It wasn’t a coincidence that Habib was voted player of the season last season, in his very first season on Tyneside, and he is easily Sam Allardyce’s best buy for the club at just £2M – what a bargain!
And another player in his first season on Tyneside, and bought for just £500K last summer, Sebastien Bassong from Metz, is a hot favorite to be Newcastle’s player of the season, with some dominant performances at the center of Newcastle’s defense.
Shearer continued:
“He and Sebastian Bassong have probably been the top performers for us in the three games that I have been here.”
“I will be looking for more of the same from the two of them.” “We are in this position, it’s a tough position, but I believe we have got enough fight, bottle and decent players to get us out of it.”
We need a solid performance at the back from Newcastle tonight, and there is a question about who will play at right back for the side, with Jose Enrique back on the left. We think young David Edgar could well be given the nod, so a back four would be Edgar, Beye, Bassong and Enrique – and that looked strong on current form.
In fact we hope Alan plays a back four and doesn’t go with another back three, which to us is just not solid enough, but with Enrique back, we think Shearer will use a flat back four again.
We are hoping he will play 4-3-3 and start Owen, Martins and Viduka up front – because we need to go for it tonight, right from the first kick-off – remember fortune always favors the brave.

Comment #14Fortune always favours the brave – are you sure Ed !!!! I’d like it too, don’t know that it always does though.
Beye and bassong are our best players because basically the rest are mediocre at best and so many many of them have seen better days and worse days, ie our potential midfield of Smith and Butt have taken Brum and leeds down respectively.

Comment #16Beye & Bassong, Duh! thats a no brainer .
Sure they are the top players in the side.
If Beye was a few years younger I believe a few clubs would be chasing him, as for Bassong we will be lucky to hang onto him, relegated or not.
Depending on to nights game, if we win then there is a window of opportunity, considering the weekend results and run in schedules.
