Shearer – We Must Take Our Chances

Alan Shearer has warned his strikers that they must take any chances they get in the game at Liverpool on Sunday.

Jonas Gutierrez – fit for Sunday’s game

That comes after Monday night’s game where all 3 strikers, Owen, Martins and Viduka each had a good chance to score – but didn’t.    And of course if just one of them had taken their chance we would have 2 more vital points towards our survival.

Alan has talked today about any chances that come up on Sunday:

“We know that we will get one chance, at least,” “And when that comes we have to take it.”

“The pleasing thing for me against Portsmouth was that we created chances.” “The disappointing thing is that we didn’t take them. I said in the previous games that I was concerned that we didn’t create the chances.”

“Now I know that if we keep creating the chances, with the caliber of strikers such as Michael Owen, (Mark) Viduka and (Obafemi) Martins that eventually they’ll go in.”

Some good news today is that our Argentine winger Jonas Gutierrez has shaken off the ankle problem he had on Monday, even though he came on late as a substitute against Portsmouth for the last 20 minutes of that game.

Shearer said today that Gutierrez is now back to full fitness ahead of Sunday’s trip to Liverpool, and Gutierrez gave a thumbs up and a smile when asked if he was OK for Sunday.

We need something out of the game at Liverpool, but it’s hard to know exactly how we can do that, with our current lackluster form.

What more can you say. Two posts – inbetween, loads of other teams in the prem and championship can do it – so should we!!!

We really are clueless when it comes to creating chances. It’s so frustrating to watch teams like Stoke, Portsmouth and the like freely slicing open our defense. When we get the chance we just freeze and constantly play awful passes to each other until we eventually lose possession. Ever since we sold Solano, Emre, Robert and Bellamy we have been embarrassingly dreadful at passing the ball around. It’s infuriating and sad to watch that area of the team in it’s sorry state. Our midfield is clearly where we have to improve in quality this summer as our defense has improved this season. Bassong is our best player! That says it all really.

Hopefully, Jonas will be at his best in this game and he can at least be one threat that we have on our team against Liverpool. If he is able to run into their final third, he should be able to make accurate enough passes to our strikers. Hell, if he gets close enough, take a shot. Just keep it low!
