There could be some good news being reported in the Newcastle Journal this morning that Newcastle United have put a transfer embargo in place.
Habib Beye – we’d hope to keep this player
This will prevent the departure of any of the club’s stars until a takeover has been completed.
The good news is that may mean a takeover is imminent and that the potential new owners have asked for nobody to be sold until they look at the situation.
It may even mean that some of the players will be kept on the wage bill in an attempt to secure promotion back to the Premier League.
A senior Newcastle club source said last night:
“There will be no players coming or going until the takeover has been completed.”
“There will not be a fire-sale and it is up to the new owners and manager to decide who comes and who goes.”
“The transfer market does not really get going until August, and Newcastle will not be doing any business until a buyer has been found. It is all on hold.”
It is all on hold – surprise surprise – you could have fooled us. 🙁
Of course quite a few of Newcastle’s players will want to move in the summer, and particularly those who want to play in the World Cup in South Africa next year.
Those include Sebastien Bassong, Jonas Gutierrez and Habib Beye, but we would hope that we will be able to keep Sebastien and Habib at least, and will have an excellent chance of doing that if Alan Shearer is appointed manager soon.
The Journal is also reporting that some of these dissatisfied players have also said they could hand in transfer requests if Alan is not appointed manager by the start of next week.
So next Monday should be interesting, and we will then be less than 3 weeks away from our first Championship game, and only 6 weeks left in the transfer market to unload up to 9 players, whose wages we just cannot afford.
So the complete stall at Newcastle is damaging the club big time, and supporters have to hope that something breaks, and breaks very soon.
How many times have we been saying that over the last 8 weeks?
Comments welcome.

Comment #2placing an embargo could mean this is going to take another 2 weeks or so! if the sale of the club was close to being done they would not have to do this!

What have you done to our weather?
The embargo allied to the formal Joe Kinnear statement are little signs that something may be ready to develop. I hope so cos if its not sorted within the next 3 or 4 days I believe we will have gone past the tipping point. That is to say it will be too late for anyone especially new owners to get in an get fixing.

NUSC meeting last night – and a few other unsavoury items .. For those of you that weren’t at the NUSC meeting last night, John Gibson intimated that the Malaysian ‘bidders’ that were shown round the club and the training ground the other week were actually casino buddies of Ashley and the whole thing was a publicity stunt to drum up interest in the club. There is currently not one offer on the table to buy NUFC. Not one.If Ashley cannot sell the club by Aug 31 or move on at least six of the club’s top earners (pick any six from about 10 on over £50,000 a week) then the likelihood is that the club will be placed into administration as Ashley cannot afford to pay the wage bill between Sep 1 and when the next tranfer window opens in 2010.Factor in the resultant points deduction for going into admin (between 10 and 30) and 14/1 to get relegated again looks like a smart bet. I’ll be putting my money where my mouth is.We are at the very, very bottom now.

Comment #13Hitman, who is John Gibson & where did he get that load of crap from???
If it’s true, then why is Keith Harris of Seymour Pierce saying there are at least 2 potentail buyers who’ve bid at least £100m & then the Profitable Group have said on their own site that they have placed a bid which is under consideration!!!
Sorry mate but that John Gibson is talking through his arse & should have been shot down if he stated that at the NUSC meeting!!!

Comment #18John Gibson is a journalist of longstanding reputation for the Chronicle. He’s not an idiot like Alan Oliver was, but despite that I doubt he has inside info that no one else does. He might just be trying to stoke fans up again.

Comment #21Soliadback – the Profitable Group didn’t say they’d made a bid on their website, just that they’d made initial contact. Not the same thing…it was quotes from a “source” in the press that said there was a bid.

Comment #22Surely IF there were no bids in place what would be the point of a transfer embargo surely the books would look better with the high earners wages off the wage bill!!!

Comment #30JG is talking through his a**e
1. If John Gibson thought there was any truth in the ‘casino buddies’ story, it would have been in the press ages ago … why keep this little gem of a scoop for a group of fans in the Simonside Arms in South Shields …
2. If there is a risk of administration due to the wage bill between Sep 1 and when the next tranfer window … why put an embargo on player sales … you would be selling every player he could NOWif that was the case …
It makes no sense at all … other than to give JG a bit of air time … he should apologise and hang his head in shame

Comment #31BenjiToon // Jul 17, 2009 at 11:31 AM point taken, no they didn’t say it on their own site, my mistake!!
As for Seymour Pierce, an independant body, why would they say they’ve had bids in matching Ashleys asking price if they hadn’t, especially as it’s their reputation which would be on the line if it was found out they were lying for a client?? how many companies do you think would use them after that, my bet would be none!!

Comment #32batty 26, no idea mate -she’s a feisty one.
Hitman, that’s a horrific picture painted by John Gibson, but cheers for posting.
Just out of interest, I don’t fully understand the financial implications on Ashley putting the club into administration. I know there are a few on here that understand that side of things.
Question: Is there any way it would work out better for MA’s pocket to hold out for the Administrators? I am confident of a sale, just curious of the financial ins and outs.

Comment #35I noticed this little line in the article.
“The transfer market does not really get going until August, and Newcastle will not be doing any business until a buyer has been found. It is all on hold.”
The idea that the transfer market doesn’t “get going” until August has been one of the problems with their transfer policy the past two years.

Comment #37I thought John Gibson was a local journo and writer about NUFC from way back? Of course there is a player embargo – both in and out. Why do you think we are still lumbered with some of last season’s shite? It is near the weekend pot-boiling time in the press so hold on folks.
