Chris Hughton has commented on the Habib Beye incident at halftime of yesterday’s 1-0 victory over Huddersfield Town.
Chris Hughton-In tough situation at Newcastle
Chris Hughton manages to shed some positive light on the multiple frays that marked yesterday’s friendly. With these comments it seems that Chris as well as his players have adopted an air of optimism to help quell the panic brewing at Newcastle.
Chris spoke of the nature of the game,
“I will be investigating the incident today.
“But sometimes it’s nice to have that bit of edge on the pitch – at times it didn’t look like much of a friendly.
“That’s the nature of the game. You have got players who care out there and sometimes they overstep the mark – but that’s part and parcel of the game.
“You would rather have a game where the players care, and that is what happened with that incident.
“The referee didn’t ask me to take Habib off – I was always going to do that.”
Last night’s game was the type of game Newcastle will see a lot of in the Championship. It was a battle in which the team that managed to capitalize on a scoring opportunity won the game. So in that respect it was great to see the team fight for the victory. It was the lack of that fight last season that led to Newcastle’s current situation.
It is also positive that the team seem to be united behind Chris Hughton since it is looking more and more likely that he will be in charge for the start of the season. He seems to have the players playing the way they will need to for a successful campaign.

Comment #5If it is Bassong, then the motive would seem to be to bring money in (to Mike Ashley’s pocket) and not to reduce the wage bill which you would assume should be the priority.

it’s probably mike not having any offers on the table and realising he needs to downsize as he can’t sell the club and can’t keep paying the wage bill.
Basically, if there’s no one in for the club then mike will need to wash his hands of serveral top earners currently on the wage bill.
My guess is that he’s not going to be able to sell so he’s looking to let a few players go before the start of the championship as if he’s still the ower come the start of the season he’ll be paying out millions and millions in wages which could cripple us/him.

In that case, Bassong is not one of the highest earners at the club, far from it really!

Comment #13Bassong is on 5,000 pounds a week.
Him going is pure fund raising not wage cutting.
If the story is to be true that is!
I am really over this takeover garbage.

Nah I know he’s one of the smallest earners but he’s probably the most vaulable player in our squad, if we sell him for ten million then that money can go towards paying for the wages/loss we’re due to make this year which is what Ashley will want.
It makes more sense to sell bassong and generate 10 millions to cover losses than sell – smith, beye, duff have a depleated squad and save ten million in wages.
It was just a wild guess with bassong as we’ve yet to see him in the kit in pre-season and he’s been the most sort after player and the most vocal about leaving.

Comment #15if we sell bassong for say 8 million and martins for 8 million we’ve generated 16 million and saved 5 million on our wage bill thus saving over twenty million this season. To save that twenty million in wages we’d have to sell roughly about 6 players which would leave our team looking like relegation candidates rarther than promotion candidates.
Mike Will be Looking to raise funds to cover the wage bill rarther than a squad overhaul as we have no manager and no time to replace players.

Comment #18What concerns me is how and who do we replace in a short period of time who will be an asset to the club.
KNowing that stupid donkey (MA) he would flog and not replace and leave a paper thin squad even thinner.
As soon as we get injuries – which we will – we will find ourself fcuked.
Bollox the lot and I have no doubt that tonights NUSC meeting will have someone shooting their gob off pretending to know somit (like last weeks). As its 10 mins from where I live – I may well pop along for a pint and a listen.

interesting he hasnt been played – could it be that he is being brought upto match fitness or he is sodding off and doesnt want to get hurt.
If it is Bassong I would expect £8 – £10mil but probably more like £4mil.
Who knows!!!

Comment #20there’s only one option in my eyes and that’s to raise enough money to cover the squad wages for this first season and hope we’re still left with a squad good enough to push for the play offs.
I say sell – Collocini (5), Bassong(8), jonas (4), martins (7) – 24 million and possibly 13 millions of the wage books giving us £39m to cover our potential loss this season then add 12 million for being demoted and revenue at 30m we should have enough to cover and possibly make mike a profit.
With that lot gone a possible team would look like this
GK-Harper
RB-R.taylor
CB-Taylor
CB-Beye
LB- Enrique
RW- Guthrie
CM- Noland
CM-Smith
LW-Duff
ST- Carroll
ST- Ameobi
Subs – Krull, butt, xisco, geremi, ranger, vukcik

If you have the time mate, it would be good to hear your feedback from tonights meeting 🙂
I’d rather hear from a regular blogger, than have some random log on and spout some rubbish like what happened last week.
Perhaps you could put your views across at the meeting then get Ed to run a thread for you 😉

Comment #27Worky, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was during the January transfer window, unless everything is already ‘pencilled-in’. In which case we’ve got around 5 weeks to appoint a manager under new owners and do a frantic squad ‘Mike Reid-esque runaround’ before the transfer window shuts.

Where else is the money going to come from to pay the wages?
Considering Ashley had to subsidise the club to the tune of 20m a year in the prem.
He won´t be putting anymore money into the club and the players are the only assets that he can sell to pay for the outgoings.
Otherwise it´s administration and he ain´t going to want to do that is he?

Comment #29…could the fact that MA will continue to pay players’ wages (under the embargo) until the club is sold, suggest he’s confident of an imminent sale?

“Worky,

Stuart,
As Rod suggests, there is a current embargo on transfer activity, due to the fact that the club is currently under a bidding process. Potential buyers will need to know what they are bidding for, and what they aren’t.
