There is a report in the Guardian today that Mike Ashley, the owner of Newcastle United, is being urged to accept a bid for the club from a consortium led by Barry Moat, a leading Tyneside businessman.
Keith Harris – recommends Ashley to sell Newcastle club
Seymour Pierce, the investment bank charged with handling the sale of Newcastle United, is understood to be recommending that he accepts a bid made by the Barry Moat consortium.
Keith Harris, Seymour Pierce’s executive chairman, is the person trying to sell the club for owner Mike Ashley, and he is thought to have recommended Mike to accept the bid from Moat, who is a local North East businessman and thought to be backed by US money.
And if Mike accepts, that could be good news for Alan Shearer, because Barry will install Alan as manager. Moat was chairman of Shearer’s testimonial committee three years ago.
Of course, we have no idea how true this report is, but we have to hope that Mike is sick and tired of Newcastle, and will get out of Toon and accept the Moat bid.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Only at Newcastle could we go from SBR to Joke Kinnear, after being mugged by 2 fat idiots in charge, in succession.
Also even stupid Ashley sussed out Barry Moat is a front for Shepherd and as Lew Ddavies said in a previous thread:-
Why is everyone happy about the possibility of moat & shepherd taking over the club?
They aren’t going to be in it for the good of the club. Just a chance to double their money in the short term.
Shepherd already raped this club to within an inch of its life, and yet you welcome him back with open arms???????
Must be the battered wife syndrome or something.
Very short memories some people have.

Comment #2doesn’t this moat guy invest heavilly in the acadamy and buys corporate boxes etc? Doesn’t sound like a guy who wants to rape the club mate. Although obviously if you’re buying a business you’d want it to make money.

Comment #4From the bits I’ve been told about this Moat charactor I think I have to agree with Nick. I’ve been talking to taxi drivers who know this bloke (maybe not the best to be talking to but) and they aint got a good word to say about him. Sounds like out of the frying pan into the fire.

Comment #6Well Ed, this has already been rubbish by the club according to other crap-loids… so no idea what the gen is now!!!
What I would like to know is, why have we apparently sold Bassong to the Spurts for a reported £8m when we apparently rejected a £10m bid just 2 days ago???
Who is telling porkies & why would we sell Bassong for £8m when we know damn well that Manc Citey would pay a lot more for him??
Which idiot is selling out players & letting them go for the first offer they get in, instead of waiting to see if another club comes in for them!!!

Comment #9Nick D you seem to forget that for them to Double there money means they have to get us back to the EPL and if they double there money thats good enough for me as it also means we would need to be real successful. would you rather we stuck by MA DL and the lying joker

Comment #11If Moat becomes owner I have offered to buy drinks all round to my staff members!
I will be throwing a party down here in Australia.
Here is a guy that has freely given his money to the club, is a die hard supporter and has helped establish our Academy from the pits to flourishing with some top class talent.
What a difference than Ashley! He may not be a billionaire but he is smart enough to manage and do the club well with a great business plan and the like.
He will also bring in stability and with Alan Shearer and get this place rocking again. We may not be the team we were when Sir Bobby was in charge, but he can restore some pride!
Everytime I read an article thats against us, some pride goes, I want that pride back, Moat can restore that!

Comment #12Havent NUFC come out and dismissed this story, and come out and dismissed JFKs story? I dont get what is going on at all.
Why would JFK be so adamant he has been offered a job…apart from the obvious dizzyness that he has! And why would Guardian, Times etc be running the Moat story with quotes from Harris without there being some truth??
Somthing is massively amiss in the Newcastle camp, is MA trying to cover all tracks to say “Oh sorry supporters nobody would buy, everything you heard were rumours” or is it genuine media slur again??
God dam this sale is ageing me terribly 😛

Comment #18i dont understand it either….we have wage bill of £65 mil…….but can only afford a wage bill of around £50 mil…..we have sold martins for £9mil and thats takes £3mil a year off wage, plus take the £9 mil to cover wages that means wage bill would already be down to £52 mil…….bassong on way to spurs for another £9mil so that takes it down to £43mil so unless he is keeping that £18mil for players or he is lining his pocket, what the hell is the money problem all about!!!!! two players gone and we are sorted! Just need him to make a decision so players can go into new season knowing whats goign on, this has dragged on for nearly a year (in september) when keegan first left…..thats terrible!!!! It cost us premiership status and now its gonna cost us getting back in at the first attempt….we are in a sorry state and it is as if Ashley doesnt give a hoot….it would not hurt for hi mto come out and say either a sale is looking likely or its not looking liekly instead of having lame-arse saying a deal is close everytime the sh*t hits the fan, or when keith harris is back he says a deal is close….he said a deal would be done by end of june…..he cant be that bloody good at sellling football clubs….we have a 52,000 seater stadium best fans in the world and an astounding training academy and youth set-up not to mention some players who have the potential to do well with the right team around them……something is very wrong here! it smells very very fishy! in the words of the hoyl father …..let us pray!

Comment #25The wage bill was said to be £56m after Oba left & Bassong was only on 12k a week (not massive) but if we take off the transfer fee, we should be down to around £48m!!
So that should look good unless the money for Oba & Bassong is paid over 2-3 years instead of up front!!
Maybe the reason Bassong went so cheap was because Ashley has said he wants cash up front for the transfer & not over 2-3 years like normamly happens!! just a thought!!

Comment #32Bassong’s salary was amongst the lowest at the club, due to the fact that he was bought on the cheap and as a relitively unknown quantity!
I think it is this modest salary which has made him easier to shift. The fact that we have so many under-achievers on such stupid salaries is what is causing us the problem and making it difficult to offload them, maybe releasing some of them from their contracts may be a cheaper alterntive in the long run?
Any player who stands up and says “I want to leave” or “I am unhappy” should be shipped out ASAP, we have spent too long carrying players who dont really want to play for us.
I hope Moat will come in and take a more common sense approach to buying players, setting salaries, bonus’s etc and at the same time make us a club that people want to play for.
I would take stability over promotion any day, if we go straight back up inthis state then we will be in such a worse position than we are now and probably facing administration/bankrupsy.

Comment #37Given the choice between Mike Ashley and anyone, I’ll take anyone.
Barry Moat is a fan and is local so he should be better for the club than MA and his cronies in London.
I will reserve final judgement until I hear what the plan is for the club and his vision for the future, should all of this take-over talk be true.
