We were confident that Newcastle would be signing Marlon Harewood on loan and that was confirmed by his agent yesterday afternoon.
Marlon Harewood – coming to Newcastle later this week
Marlon’s agent, Phil Sproson, confirmed his client is getting close to a three-month loan move from Aston Villa:
“I believe we are close to agreeing everything and hopefully the move can be finalized later this week,”
“Talks are ongoing between both clubs and I think they are keen to get it resolved.”
“Marlon is back to fitness now and he is ready and raring to go.”
“He is very keen on going to Newcastle and playing regular first-team football again.”
And Steven Taylor has made it known, to anybody who will listen, that he doesn’t want to be rested for tonight’s Carling Cup tie at Peterborough, and wants to play as many games as he can this season.
Steven said:
“I won’t be asking for a rest, I want to carry on playing. I want to play in every single game because we have that winning mentality in the dressing room and nobody wants to miss out.
“The Carling Cup is not our main priority this season, that has to be promotion back to the Premier League.”
“But we have a group of lads who want to win every single game – and it doesn’t matter what competition it is.”
We expect Taylor or Coloccini to be rested tonight, to allow 19 year-old Tamas Kadar to start the game.
And then of course with Georgian center-back Zurab Khizanishvili fighting for a first team place, there will be increased competition for places for the Ipswich game on Saturday, and that can only be good for the team.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Harewood = the worst first touch in the premiership.
Last year some fans we’re calling for us to sign Huntalear. Now we are lucky to get Harewood on loan…..cheers Mike!

Comment #2I love Taylor’s mentality, I do think he needs a rest regardless though. I still don’t think much of Harewood to be honest, but if he comes in and makes me eat my words I will be a happy bunny indeed!

Comment #18We need bodies at the minute and if he can pitch in with goals then i say fair enough. You can look at his premiership outings but you have to realise he wont be facing the likes of Rio,Vidic, John Terry in the championship. The defending from alot of the teams i’ve seen this season as looked far from impressive and he’s a big lad. If he can put himself about a bit i dont see the issue
Jamesthefirst and Johno-to be fair, there were people calling for us to sign Huntelaar but they were on another planet if they actually thought it could happen. I wouldnt say its a sign of how far we’ve fallen I could demand we sign Messi and it wouldnt mean anything like.

Comment #19I’d rather see a winger in than another striker at the mo. Unbelievable lack of width and pace at the moment.

Comment #20I appologise Kevin Nichol if my back-handed attempt at humour has offended, sometimes it is hard to turn off the old forces humour, it’s merely my own mental defence mechanism at dealing with horrific situations. Meanwhile on planet football, I have to agree with Whumpie that we need at least one winger.

Comment #26Ross that is very true , that was a fairly stupid comment by myself alright! I was more trying to get at the fact we are now in the championship and players like harewood will help us get back to the prmiership! Not that anyone could get that from what i wrote , but under pressure in work just to type something!

Comment #29G. I see nowt wrong with what you said, it is tabloid policy to obfuscate the truth. I thought your comment was funny and if read correctly you weren’t accusing anyone of rape.
As for Harewood I havn’t a clue as I aint seen enough of him I would prefer some one with close ball control skills but as pointed out we aint going to get Messi, so we will have to make do with what we can get!

Comment #30I do quite like these 3 month loans, but bugger my, as soon as January comes and these players leave, we’re going to be rushing to get players in. And rushing to get players in, on evidence of the last window, isn’t exactly our speciality.

Comment #33It is Marlon King….He is up on a sexual assault charge in either Oct/Nov this year!
Let me make this perfectly clear….There are no current criminal/civil proceedings against marlon harewood of any sort!
Let’s let him get here and judge him on his performances for newcastle united before we begin to shhot him down! Typical of a lot of fans; he’s written off before he’s even played a game!
I also have to comment on the ridiculous notion that we even had a chance of signing Huntelar last year! Absolute rubbish! We have not been a club at the level required to sign a player of that calibre for many seasons now! People need to stop living in the last or on the size of our crowd!
We are a championship club. The best we can hope for at present is proven championship standard players! Harewood set the championship alight at west ham and helped them to promotion…are we in a position to be choosey?
I think not…
(No offence taken G 🙂 )

Comment #35I’d play Barton instead of Guthrie, Bartons been useless so far this season and we therefore wont miss him if he gets injured whereas Guthrie has been excellent and will be a big loss if injured

Comment #36Cheers for the support Bill F. It genuinely was meant as a light hearted moment, but it obviously did offend some, so I have no problem apologising for that. Back to the football, whilst Marlon Harewood wouldnt be my first choice at any level, as somebody already stated we really just need bodies in the squad right now. Not a case of trying to set the world alight, just keep the momentum up. So far this division has looked like a bad one, and whilst I would argue that I would like to see pretty football played, I accept that this is an ugly football division so we need to play ugly.

Comment #40“playing regular first team football again”. I hope not. Carroll and Ranger both seem to be taking their chances and this is the perfect opportunity to determine properly whether they are going to cut it. Wouldn’t want their development to be hindered by a 30-year old Aston Villa reject trying to reinvigorate his career. Could be a useful backup option though until Shola is fit again. Agree that a winger or left back would make more sense.
