After just completing a piece on Andy Carroll, and saying that we’ll need his goals tonight, news from the official site that Andy will be rested at Peterborough.
Nile Ranger – 18 year-old striker will start tonight
Thankfully there’s nothing wrong with Andy in terms of injuries, and we have to think Chris Hughton will now give a full outing to Nile Ranger, and maybe give a run-out at some stage to local lad Ryan Donaldson, too.
And we accept that fully, because some of our top players must be rested, and we need to have a fresh side that can do battle and take all 3 points at Ipswich on Saturday.
And the Championship is of course out very top priority this season, as we must maintain our challenge at the top of the league so we can get back to the PL at the very first attempt.
Nile will start this game and he needs a goal tonight, to keep his forward momentum going this season.
But in the last two games, when he’s come on, the tall Londoner has looked little short of awesome, so it will be good to see how he plays tonight.
If Chris plays a usual 4-5-1 then Nile will be the Lone Ranger up front.
We just had to get that one in, and Nile’s goal will obviously be to score tonight – excuse the pun. 😀

Comment #1hughton needs to play 4-4-2 with Ranger. Lua Lua up front – we’re playing peterbrough in a game we dont really care about so at least try to play attacking football

Comment #2Its not surprise at all to most fans here in newcastle Ed because the general concesus is we dont really care about tonigh’s game! Yes winning is a great habbit and we would prefer not to lose; but the main focus and priority is saturday and ipswich town!
The league is what we must focus on; would you have rather we lost to huddersfield and both shola and jonas not come on ang got injured? Of course you would!
A team of reserves and young players tonight please; hopefuly we will rest jose, s.taylor, colo, smith, nolan & Carroll!
Remember ipswich do not have a game mid week!

Comment #4I agree that with such a thin squad we should rest as much of the team that will start against Ipswich as possible. We must get 3 points on Sat.
To Rest
Smith
Enrique
Taylor
Harper
Carroll
Nolan
But despite that Hughton will still line up a negative approach to the game and play it safe like he always does.

Comment #5The only person surprised at Carol’s omission is you ed. The real news here is that Ranger is playing which means, that Hughton is not planning to play the duo against Ipswitch. It is likely that he will stick with 4-5-1 against a side low in confidence and running scared. He will give them room and time on the ball. Oh for a proper manager.

Agreed, a competition we don’t really need so at least make it entertaining for the fans.
I would prefer Lua Lua on the right wing though, see what he’s made of since we’re short on numbers in that department. Give Baheng a run up front, I think he has the chance to provide us with somehting a bit different than our current crop.
I hope Vukic will get a bit longer than his usual 10 minutes. I haven’t really been as impressed with him as I expected due to his recent hype. But that is more than likely down to his lack of playing time, give him a good run and see how he does.

Comment #12Hughton is starting to show the cracks as a caretaker manager with baffling selections and tactics but he can only do what he can with limited resources.
Its a sign of just how far this club has fallen when fans class this game as irrelevant instead of a chance to do well in a cup competition, i dont blame them, its been a gradual erosion of their will and they have succumbed.

Comment #15Stick 11 kids on the field with a couple of first teamers on the bench. As somebody has already mentioned, winning is a nice habbit, but we really could do without this competition. Concentrate on the league, forget about the cups.

But the team has played some decent passing football during our matches so far, just it has been few and far between due to his defensive mentality.
It would be good to see a bit more of that, hopefully he will realise this. Would be nice to see us perhaps kill a few games off rather than resting on our laurels all the time.

agreed mate, we defo have it in us to play some decent football & obviously CH is a little scared to go all out…After all, he ‘s only ever ‘seconds’ away from us lot gettin’ on his ass, isn’t he?..

Comment #21I tae the points about trying a different formation away from home in this particular game, but I din’t agree. The important thing when new players get their chance to play in the first team is that they get an opportunity to learn the system that the manager wants in the “serious” games – then they will be better prepared when the call comes in such games. That’s how top teams do it – “here’s our system – learn it, play it”. You can’t do that if you mess about for the fun of it.

Comment #22nufc 0809 – kishanvili is cup tied and baheng or danqua played last night.
If we take this game too lightly we might get another Orient type pasting which will set the players back months.

Comment #24bit harsh to call him an idiot, yes he has made mistakes with neagative tactics this season, but on the whole you cant fault the job he has done. if AS had done the same job everyone would be calling him a god. give the man a little respect. at least he changed things early enough on saturday and got the job done

Comment #26cant believe all the negative comments made here about hughton, especially playing 451. doing a good job considering the circumstances. need to rest the key players and give some fringe players a chance tonight so we can see how they good they are. we should stick with the 451, its part of the reason we’ve been pretty solid over the last 7-8 games

Comment #28I disagree with the idea that fans don’t care. Given our tiny squad, these matches are vital for getting the younguns ready for the CCC matches when they are (inevitably) needed.
Rest our lynch-pins (Smith, Enrique, Taylors, Colo, Guthrie, Harper, Carroll) and put younguns around a spine of the more expendable seniors like Butt, Geremi and (dammit) Barton.

Comment #30There is a reason why we’ve won 7 out of 9. There is a reason why we start matches 4-5-1 and finish 4-4-2.
I thought it was embarrassing when ‘fans’ got on the manager’s back as soon as results went bad – but I’m cringing now I’ve seen that you’ll do it when things are going well too!
Honestly – this has really p****ed me off.

Comment #32I agree the football hasnt been pretty so far and without doubt Ranger as a attacking option is very promising, but to slag houghton off is very harsh in my opinion. The bloke clearly wouldnt be good enough for the prem, as proven, but at least give the guy credit for what he’s done so far. If we’d lost the games we’ve won fair enough there would be justification. I dont want him as a perm manager (another glen roader situation would unfold i imagine) but slagging him off when we are winning is a joke. I would have given anything for results over performances last season.

Comment #33Pair up Ranger and Lovenkrands tonight, after all Loven needs the match practice. I agree with you there Whumpie, i think Hughton has done exceptionally well considering the circumstances surounding the club and lack of personnel in key areas.

Comment #38I’m gutted the match isn’t live, really – I thoroughly enjoyed the reserves matches I got to see when I lived in Cumbria, and the chance to see the younguns a few years on would be great.
Really interested to know the line-up and tactics. I suspect we’ll do the same as before – defensive 4-5-1 switching to 4-4-2 once we’ve kurbed their enthusiasm a bit.
I’d love to see Kadar, Lua Lua, Vukic and Ranger all get a start, too. Possibly Donaldson in there, and a core of Geremi, Butt and Loverboy to provide the experience.
Not sure what to do at the back, though – just not enough bodies to avoid playing a 1st-choice defender or two, which is scary.

Comment #40Get a job done and win games. Worry about how we are playing when it stops working. In an ideal world id like to see us winning whislt scoring plenty of goals and playing free flowing football.
Considering the mess we are still in off the field im happy with whats going on on it. Although having said that, since Ashleys gone a bit quite and there always has to be a fall guy for some people i guess because houghton hasnt got us playing like brazil its his turn…for now!
