News this morning that it seems that Chris Hughton does not have Marlon Harewood on his list of summer targets.
Marlon Harewood – not coming back to Newcastle
Marlon came on loan last year, and he did a very good job at Newcastle and got 5 goals for us and turned out to be a great guy, who seemed willing to do anything Newcastle asked of him.
And Hughton was just about to bring him back in late January, when he broke his foot in training at Aston Villa, and Hughton switched to Coventry’s Leon Best, and actually bought that player.
Leon hasn’t done too well in his initial time on Tyneside, and is yet to score, although he looks a decent player who can still improve.
But words today from Harewood’s agent Phil Sproson suggests that Hughtion is not interested in bringing Marlon back to Tyneside, as Phil told The Journal today:
“I think Marlon would be very interested in going back to Newcastle but at the moment we’re exploring other options,”
“I’ve kept in touch with Newcastle and I spoke to Chris last week to gauge any interest but I don’t think there is anything there.”
“Obviously it looks like his budget is limited but I don’t think Marlon’s on his list of summer targets.”
The budget for players this summer is not big on Tyneside, but that’s not surprising after the club has lost almost £70M in the last two financial years – and we cannot keep on that track.
But money will be made available for suitable players, we are almost certain of that – it just depends who Newcastle go after.
We may be the only ones, but we are still quite positive about the summer transfer window, and think that Newcastle can do some good deals, both loan deals and transfer deals.
Phil continued about Marlon and Newcastle:
“If there is a re-think or the budget means things have changed then of course Marlon would be happy to go back,”
“He was unlucky in his time at Newcastle. He had an injury when he went there and just when he was getting a bit of momentum back and his fitness came back, the loan ran out.”
“I think he probably would have ended up at Newcastle if it wasn’t for the injury but it is just one of those things that you have to deal with.”
“We’ve been in negotiation with Championship clubs and a couple of overseas clubs and things are quite advanced with one of the overseas clubs,”
“We’ve also had some initial talks with a club just relegated from the Premier League and that is a very real option. But he may decide to go overseas – it is a decent standard in the country he’s looking at.”
“I would have thought something will be sorted soon.”
The thing with Marlon is that he is nearly always injured, so we think it’s a good decision not to bring him back for the Premiership – but we wish the player all the best, because he did do a good job for the Newcastle club when he was here.
Jermaine Beckford – available as free agent
If we are talking about free agent strikers there’s always Leeds United’s Jermaine Beckford, who Everton are said to be after.
We’ve always liked this lad, and wonder if Chris will go after him this summer.
We hope so. What do you think?
Comments always welcome.

Comment #1Beckford’s been long-reportedly destined for Everton.

Ken Bates’s, Leeds’ ever tactful chairman, has described Beckford’s agent as unusual and not easy to have discussions with.
Pot and kettle come to mind here?

Comment #3Personally I think Albin at Getafe would be a much better option on a free transfer. I also think Petrov at Man C would be a brilliant buy. He has the routine and flair, and even at 31 I think he at least has 3 more years at top level. Petrov on a free transfer would be absolute class, both in the terms of skill and routine.

Comment #5Neither. A poor reflection of CH if these are in his sights. We can get far better than these cannabees.

Comment #6Colombus have to agree with you, Petrov and Albin would be great. Petrov especially when i’ve seen him play for city he has been great and is only kept out of the side because of Bellamy. Could go to any top four side though and would we have the wage budget for him? What about Pederson at Blackburn?

Comment #7I’m a norwegian and I’ve followed Pedersen for long time. He has a great foot but his work rate and pace just isn’t good enough. I hope we look elsewere. Mario Santana at Fiorentina is a free agent this summer. He is a quality player and would provide great cover both creatively in the middle or as a right winger. Another argentine in with great experience would be a great buy! He is 28 and perhaps a bit old for our new policy but he is a qualiy-player who most certantly would fit the bill! I think it would be possible to get him!
When it comes to Petrov I don’t think of him as a very realistic target, but I cant really see any of the big clubs coming in for him either. Maybe he would be positive to reduce his wages for a new challenge and being a local hero at St.James!?

Comment #8I’d rather get DJ Campbell than Beckford….but would prefer to get rid of Best & get someone else….
Maybe even give Xisco a go, he might get on with it with 2 other spanish speakers doing so well at SJP.

Comment #9You must remenber Beckford’s personality and I don’t think Chris H will risk the feelgood factor going down because of a prmadonna

Comment #10CH has shown he can handle personalities, dare we forget that currently in our ranks we have :
Carroll
Taylor
Barton
Ranger
all have had there fair share of problems and although we have had a few bumps this season, CH has handled the players better than any other manager in recent history at SJP.
If he wanted Beckford, i’d for one back him, as hes the ‘different’ type of striker we need.
Keep the rest, Xsico excluded and add Beckford.
