There is a report in the News Of The World this morning that Newcastle and Middlesbrough are set to do battle this week to sign Rangers striker Kris Boyd.
Kris Boyd – are Newcastle to enter into negotiations this week?
The Scottish International, whom Chris Hughton has already said doesn’t interest the Newcastle club, will become a free agent on Thursday, 1st July, after his contract runs out with Rangers.
The NOTW is reporting that talks are due to start with Boyd this week, as we know it’s true the 26 year-old prolific striker has decided to leave the Glasgow Rangers club he’s been at for the last 5 years.
It’s being reported that Boyd wants £1M a year in wages, and Newcastle could meet those demands, if indeed this story is true.
Newcastle are said in the same report to have limited their wages to a maximum of £35K a week on any new deals at the club – that’s around £1.8M a year (boy it would be a real struggle to live on that), both for existing players and for new players coming in – but again we don’t know if this is factual.
This may well be an old regurgitated story in the NOTW, or indeed the action may have picked up, as the last day of Boyd’s contract at Rangers is this coming Wednesday, June 30th.
It’s been well documented that the Scottish International would love to join the Newcastle United club – and Kris is said to have supported the Magpies as a boy, when the “Entertainers” were managed by the great Kevin Keegan.
Kris has scored a prolific 128 goals in 192 appearances for Rangers, but is completely unproven in the English Premier League, which is the world’s top football league right now.
Probably the best way to find out if this story is really true – is to see what Chris Hughton says about this story either today or tomorrow – we must say we have out doubts.

Comment #3They are digging out the old line about Joey Barton will be ‘like a new signing’ again, now.
Is that code for, ”and that’s yer lot”?
At xmas, do they re-wrap the kids’ presents from last year, or what?
“Here’s a set of new batteries for the toy you got last year….Wow, thanks, Da.”

Comment #4I’ve got more belief in Santa than I have in Ashley.
If he sends Hughton out to manage this year in the Premiership with last year’s make-do-and-mend side without the tools to do the job paid for from at least part of the river of money flowing in from TV and 50ooo fans, he won’t deserve the loyalty Hughton has shown him or anything but the scorn he will inevitably get from those same fans.

Comment #7I think we should get him – he is a good player.
Also sell Jonas (lots of money) and ryan taylor in order to fund a transfer for aiden mcgeady.
Sell alan smith and use money plus money availale from ashley to get KP Boateng then Otamendi using transfer kitty plus money from leon best sale.
Overall, team for next season:
Harper
Otamendi Taylor Collocini Enrique
Guthrie Barton
Routledge Mcgeady
KP Boateng
Carrol or Boyd
Bring in loans/free agents for squad depth

Comment #9Riquelme is a free agent, i think he could be good player for us if we can afford him. He can add creativity in the midfield, and that is something we missing in our game. http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2010/06/27/1997945/west-ham-united-fail-in-deals-for-juan-riquelme-and-tal-ben-haim-

Comment #10I think some of the people who write in here play too much fantasy football. This is the real world and Newcastle were talking about, and Ashley’s money. He won’t spend it.

Comment #11Kris Boyd would be a decent signing for us, but apparently there are plenty of clubs after him that have Euro Football next season, which puts us behind.
