Sol Campbell in his prime was a world-class player, and one of the best central defenders England has ever produced, and most Newcastle fans think he is a great signing for the club.
Sol Campbell – while at Portsmouth
Sol was hoping to play in the World Cup last summer, but did not make the squad, but when you consider the performances of some of our central defenders in June, especially against Germany, they were abysmal, and Sol couldn’t have done any worse, that’s for sure.
Chris Hughton told the Evening Chronicle today:
“For us, it’s all about this season, and he’s coming into it on the back of playing for Arsenal at the top end of the Premier League.”
“His games were limited for Arsenal. But he’s still very capable of playing in this division. That is the reason we signed him.”
“When you look at his record, it is almost second to none, and there’s a reason he has played almost 500 games in this division.”
Sol has played an amazing 635 first class games in his career so far, and is near to breaking the 500 mark in PL games alone, and to play that often means you do not get too many injuries, and you take good care of yourself.
Chris continued:
“Whatever he lacks in youth he more than makes up for in experience.” “He’s somebody who has played in all of the big games.” “That can only benefit some of our younger players.”
“Sol has also been fortunate in that he’s avoided all of the big injuries.” “That has enabled him to play on for as long as he has.”
“I think he’s looking forward to playing in as many games as he can, and we’re looking forward to seeing him out there.”
Given that Mike Williamson and Tamas Kadar are unproven in the Premier League, and that Steven Taylor is out injured for 3 months, Sol is almost the perfect signing for Newcastle for next season.
And a whopping 88% in our poll think he is a good signing for the Newcastle club.
Comments always welcome.

Comment #2Keane, No chance. Wages would be too high. Can’t believe we could have signed him years ago but Souness said he isn’t a player that can improve Newcastle.

Comment #5You have to question a strategy which appears to suggest that we wait for everyone else to do their business and then we pick up what’s left ?
Surely the manager should have ID’d the playing positions (and then the players) that needed strengthening as soon as the last season ended.
This feels like we’re looking around Netto for a bargain Foot Massager when we really wanted a full blown home entertainment centre ???
You’ll never learn will you Ashley ?

Comment #6Andymac, it’s called being prudent and paying the right price and player terms for every new signings.
I’m sure you and the Mrs do exactly the same in your day to day life unless it’s Xmas or a birthday when you are extravagant.
I’m hoping Ash will give CH at least 1oM to spend this summer, which for a PL side is nothing; I agree…….

Comment #9AndyMac; I’m from the same planet, but trust me, one can hope “buddy”, as we are all black and white through……
10m is not a lot to spend for PL survival, but we need to be patient and hope CH will bring us better last minute buys than in the past!
Keep the faith buddie….
