There is news today that Manchester United right winger midfielder Tom Cleverley is to decide this coming week, whether to join Blackpool or Newcastle on a season-long loan deal.
Tom Cleverley – Newcastle or Blackpool?
That must be a tough decision for Cleverley to make – but let’s face it, there’s a huge difference in the draw between Newcastle and Blackpool, and that’s not meant in any way to criticize the Blackpool club.
It’s just that Newcastle have been in the PL 16 of the last 17 seasons and this is the first season in the top flight for Blackpool – and in addition Newcastle can also draw a massive 52,000 in their home games at the famous St. James’ Park.
The capacity at the Bloomfield Road facility is 12,555.
But both clubs are after Tom, who is a highly rated player, and who was included on the recent tour of the USA by the Red Devils, and is not a guaranteed starter at Newcastle, and that could well put a damper on the deal, as far as Alex Ferguson is concerned.
Wayne Routledge is the starting right winger at Newcastle, and Chris Hughton may not be willing to sacrifice Routledge, for a player who will be on loan at Newcastle for just one season.
Alex Ferguson is keen for the 20-year old to gain some additional experience and the Basingstoke-born player himself wants Premier League action next season, after spending last season in the Championship with Watford.
Cleverley will meet with officials from both the Newcastle and Blackpool clubs this week before deciding which club to to sign for.
All things being equal it has to be Newcastle.
There was news last week that Chris Hughton was unwilling to guarantee that Tom will start at Newcastle, and we think that could well scupper the deal for Newcastle, however.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Send him on to Blackpool. This club does not need a loanee like this. It would imply that the player at that positon (Routledge) is not good enough for the spot & that no one else in the entire NUFC operation is good enough. Loanees are for spot problems caused by injury or suspension, other than that, they just demoralize the NUFC contracted players.

Comment #2we could really use Tom as cover here, however i think he’s got more chance of 1st team football at Blackpool, lets hope he picks the bigger club 😉

Comment #3BeeGuy: Chris Hughton isn’t stupid, and you can see that he really likes Routledge, i’m almost 100% sure that if he came he would certainly be cover as he may be saving his money for another transfer instead of much needed cover for Wingers

Comment #4He will go to Blackpool as he will be guaranteed a start there. What is the point in bringing him here only to sit him on the bench. Plus ,if he does come here and turns out a fantastic player then we will be even more dissapointed when he has to go back to his parent club. Waste of time, go and buy a winger, striker and a left back. Simple as that not rocket science.

Comment #5Toon1978- indeed it isn’t rocket science, however it’s not as simple as that, we could easily go and buy people for those positions but we need the right people, Hughton could right now go and get those players but if we ended up with another Pancrate or Luque for example, would you be happy? It takes time to get exactly thew right people and i’m sure Hughton will do just that

I ain’t saying go out and buy any tom, dick or Harry but we cannot wait forever to wait for the right players to come along. We need to invest soon its a simple as that. If we do not we will be short on numbers AGAIN in the positions of Left back, left and right wing and a half decent striker.

Comment #9toon1978 we need to invest now i agree, targets should have been mapped out well ahead of time, scouting should have been done, i still dont understand why hughton thinks doing buisiness late is good, surely the more time the group of players and new signings spend together in pre season the better, getting to know each other, and working on shape of team etc

Comment #10I know its not always that simple, especially due to the new 25 man squad rules with home grown players etc etc, but he should know who he wants, and have already sounded the teams out

Agree with you. All these players we have to cover right wing if Wayne Routledge is out and why need this guy?

Comment #20Anyone who doesn’t think we need this player is clearly a effing idiot!
He is better than Routledge and even if he didn’t start each week he would make Routledge up his game.

Comment #23rose from tottenham would also we a decent option for the left wing and can cover left back, and also armand traore, both can cover both left back, and wing, so kills two birds with one stone

Comment #26yeah lewman apparently he didnt, but he lacks pace, i think hughton is trying to find a way to utilise him, as they have obviously tried getting rid of him, but cant. And hes on 55k per week, which is disgraceful for someone with so little experience at top level

Like what ED wrote ahead it says Chris Hughton hopes to clinch a deal for Tom Cleverly this week and are still pursuing Hatem Ben Arfa! We really need him. His creativity.

Comment #33Mcgeady would be great but i think he is off to Russia but rather than Cleverly why not get Seb Larson he can play right mid and CM but i think he can also cover right back and from what i hear of Perch against PSV we need some one who can play their also in a 25 man squad he plays everywhere and i think he comes under homegrown

Comment #35cheers baro mate, when you watch psv’s one touch passing and movement, newcastle look almost embarasing, we look slow, and like its 11 players that have never played together, we seriously need to work on wall retention and pressing the opposition better

Comment #40jonas takes pressure off the side, he carries the ball well, its just his final ball, i have to say it has improved, he needs to keep in simple, and just put it in the zone in front of the goalkeeper with pace. Yeah baro they moved it round so well, reminded me or bobby robsons side, pace, movement, and purpose, we seem to pass it round till we run out of ideas then lump it forward, we have no-one central who makes runs to create angles to recieve passes to link up with the wingers and forwards, everything is sideways or backwards, nolan and smith cant play together or we are doomed, it has to be nolan and guthrie, or barton and guthrie for me.
