The 2010 summer transfer window closed about 20 minutes ago and it doesn’t seem like Newcastle got anybody else through the door.
Mike Ashley – strengthened the squad again this transfer window – good
We would have expected something to be posted on the Newcastle web-site if we had been successful in bringing someone else in, but nothing, so we have to assume the five players brought in so far are all that we are getting this summer.
But with the acquisition of James Perch ( £1.5M), Dan Gosling (free), Sol Campbell (free), Cheick Tiote (£3.5M) and Hatem Ben Arfa (season long loan with chance of £5.5M transfer next summer), we are more than satisifed with the transfer work the Newcastle club have been able to achieve this summer. It’s the second transfer window in a row where the club have strengthened the squad.
The Tyneside club spent just £5M in the summer transfer market, but we still managed to get 5 good players in, and as Chris Hughton has said, the squad is now what we have until January, when the window opens again for a month.
By then we have to hope that Newcastle are somewhere safely in the middle of the Premier League table, and certainly if the first three games of the season are anything to go by, that’s where we could well be when 2011 rolls around – and that would be great!
Kazenga LuaLua got his move on loan to Brighton through the end of the year, but nothing at all on the possible Robbie Keane, Greg Cunningham or Ricky van Wolfswinkel deals.
Maybe these will be targets come January – who knows?
Comments very welcome.

Comment #3liamdee100 – it could well be that Derek LLambias did much of the heavy lifting – so he may be learning – which is good.
We look in good shape right now – considering where we were 12 months ago. 😀

Comment #8MacToon, signed Benny and Tiote.
Carroll is slightly injured, but fine really (he pulled out of England Under-21s, but I think it’s because he doesn’t want to get injured, not that he actually has an injury).
Wolves were disgusting, and their treatment of Barton has been discussed loads. Karl Henry was told to kick him at every opportunity and basically he did.
Barton was a class act though. Got an assist and didn’t react at all. They’ve been fined for having more than 6 players booked.
That’s about it really

Comment #15Shearer went down in my estimation when he laughed at the tackles.
He’s meant to be neutral, but he can’t put a squabble behind him even though the thing he laughed at could have hugely affected our chances of survival had Barton been injured.
All that, and yet, he can manage to call Newcastle ‘they’. Shameful

Comment #16Shearer would have loved barton geeting tackled by wolves, because shearer doesnt like him after the newcastle liverpool match when they had a huge bust up in the dressing room when he was manager as barton told shearer that he was a rubbish manager

Comment #20Very happy with the transfer window apart from not being able to bring in another LB. However Kadar should be able to do a good job. We can’t have Perch filling in there.

Comment #21We can still get free transfers can’t we?
If so, how about francois clerc or gai assulin?
I’m pleased with the people we’ve brought in, BUT I do find it strange that the positions we need most have not been filled. At the start of the window a striker and cover for Jose were the most important positions to address and we’ve done neither.

Gosling and Arfa should improve the quality of the squad.
We did need a left back and a striker.
Still with the Sky money, good attendances Ashley should soon cover the peanuts he’s spent (yet again).
At least he didn’t sell Carroll.

Comment #35great TW..well done NUFC team for pulling off these transfers..really great job..
& also: im glad we didnt buy striker..we have 6 of them & we play with only 1. true..some of the strikers we have are not up to EPL standards, BUT getting another one in could disrupt the harmony. in my opinion we have too many already. first we need to sell few of them & then buy an upgrade.. & im sure we will..but..for now we ‘re in good shape.. next year im sure loven will leave (will be old & ranger will take his place) & i think xisco/best will also leave.. too bad shola’s here for life..=)

Comment #36i think this was an unbelievable window if only for the piece of mind we have gotten, in cashley(to an extent)
i wasn’t expecting this much activity, as i thought most of the additions would be made in jan. that being said i believe that hoots was still trying to get someone in today but it’s nice to have the ability to say no thanks, we’re alright versus making silly last minute panic buys. we have this squad now to sort itself out until jan and certainly it should be able to keep us in a comfortable position. i think the club showed it’s commitment once again much like last jan, by not settling on “i think we can reach our objectives”, but making moves to almost guarantee, we reach those objectives. this year our only objective is 17th and up.

Comment #39what i think we have now is some interesting battles within the squad. i think shola is in a battle with xisco till jan. if xisco (or best) jumps ahead of shola on the depth chart i think shola will be gone in jan. if not, then xisco will be moving on.
best’s spot is secure for now because he’s still young and unlike xisco, on low wages.
saylor will also be battling it out with willo for his newcastle life unless he signs a contract soon. the only way he gets his money is if he proves he is indispensable in the next 4 months. with his current injury and willo’s form, saylor might be on his way out in jan, unless he finds his way back down to earth.
