Newcastle Already Have Targets For January Transfer Window

There are some players Newcastle for one reason or another, were not able to bring to Tyneside during the summer.

Per Ciljan Skjelbred – Newcastle target in January?

Some of that could have been due to financial concerns, because one thing Mike Ashley is keen to do at Newcastle is to balance the books – and boy, that will be a change, after the reckless and sometimes extravagant spending of previous regimes.

The Evening Chronicle is reporting today that Newcastle United may revive their interest in 21-year-old Dutch striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel, once  the transfer window re-opens on January 1st of next year.

But the other news is that Liverpool are also after the striker, and will provide stiff competition to Newcastle.

As we would expect, Chris Hughton remained noncommittal on any potential future signings, as he told the Evening Chronicle today:

“In January we will re-assess what we have, and I think I’ll get the backing of the owner again like last time,  if we need to strengthen the team at that stage.”

Another target presumably that Newcastle would have gone after, if they hadn’t captured Ben Arfa,  was Norwegian International and Newcastle supporter Per Ciljan Skjelbred, a central midfielder or winger, who has been on the Newcastle radar screen for a few years now.

But the Newcastle scouts have done their job well, in both of the last two transfer windows, and it was interesting to see that 9 of the 23 players named in Newcastle’s first team PL squad on Wednesday afternoon,  had been signed this year.

And of course signing players in January is not just for this season, but for the future success of the club, and if the following transfer windows are as successful as the last two have been, we’ll have a good team very soon – maybe even sooner than a lot of us were expecting.

That’s an interesting thought.

trousers, Wickham will cost way more than £2 million. I reckon it’d be around £4 million for most and £4.5 for us (cos of Keano)

Not too bothered about further signings in january – its not often a good time to make critical signings anyway.
Instead, I’d be more concerned that perhaps a team still in the Champs league with an injury or two will try to tempt Ashley with a substantial bid for Carroll. I hope ‘lucky no. 17’ the club owner won’t go ‘Kerching!’ and grab it with both hands.

As for Skjelbred, I’ve never seen him play, but we have apparently checked him out so many times (and not only Newcastle) that I can’t help thinking if he was any good, one of our many managers to look him over would have taken a punt on him by now.
He’s no youth player any more and whether he’s a Toon fan or not (aren’t we all?) the prospect of signing him just doesn’t get my pulse going.
You keep banging on about his love of the mags but realistically it makes not a whit of difference whether he’s tattooed himself with black and white stripes, has a duvet cover with Frank Clark’s head on it, whether he is growing a ‘Joey’ on his top lip or breeds magpies for a hobby – the question is, is he a good enough player to improve the first team, or isn’t he?
By all means sell him a season ticket, but don’t give the bloke a contract because he likes Greggs’ stotties and wears a flat cap.

Fortunately, I doubt Hoots will be bothered about any other than footballing credentials.
But if after all the times he’s been watched, not ONCE has a scout raced back to burst in the manager’s office and said, ‘ boss, you just gotta sign this Norwegian kid!’ its a safe bet the light has gone out under this one and perhaps it is just as well.

You clearly don’t know anything about this player.

You are the type of guy who would be saying the same thing about Shearer before we signed him. Get lost.

And you clearly don’t know anything of whats going on in the transferbusiness. Skjelbred is a very important 1st team player for Rosenborg. If they sell him at all, they will have a replacement in place before the sale. Thats how they do it.

@balubas: but he’s right… if he was as good as we’re all lead to think, why hasn’t he been signed already? He IS a good player and he COULD do a job for us, but in the same way smith or Raylor can do a job for us. We are rebuilding and are fighting to cement our place in the EPL once again.

I’d take Honda over Skjelbred any day (and before balubas has a go – I’m a massive fan of P.C Skjelbred and have been for some time)

Thump… we would hav gotten PCS if it wasnt for his clubs demands.. like I said.. they don’t sell until they have a replacement also..

AND.. Honda isnt better than PCS. Honda would crumble in the EPL.

I understand how much Rosenberg want him but the simple fact is that if he was as good surely we’d table an offer they couldn’t refuse. Maybe send one of our youngsters in a p/e deal – plenty of ways around it.

I don’t think Honda will crumble over here at all, but he would need a fair amount of settling in time.
