News in the Spanish press today that Barcelona youngster Oriol Romeu is being tracked by Newcastle United as a potential future signing.
Oriol Romeu – 18 year old Barcelona defensive midfielder
The source of the report is the Spanish Daily Sport and they report that Newcastle have been watching the youngster for w awhile now.
Newcastle are waiting to see if if he fails to sign a contract extension with the Barcelona club, and if that happens the Tyneside club seem ready to move in and get the youngster on a free transfer.
But there are also a number of Premier League clubs who know all about this young lad, including Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, but it’s hardly surprising that Newcastle will face competition to sign this top young player.
And another manager that’s being reported today that is after the 18 year-old, is a certain Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager.
The youngster was born in Ulldecona, Tarragona in Catalonia, and is known as either Oriol or Romeu, and he has played for all the Spanish Youth sides through the U20 level.
Barca manager Josep Guardiola gave the youngster his debut for the full Barcelona side last year in a friendly, and he arrived at Barcelona’s youth academy back in 2004.
In August of this year he was included in the nineteen-man FC Barcelona squad to face Sevilla in the first leg of the Spanish Supercup, where he made his competitive debut, playing the full 90 minutes – so this lad must already be some player.
He will turn 19 this month.
Chris Hughton said over the weekend that he expects a number of top young players to come to Newcastle and train with the development squad, as the Newcastle coaching staff take a look at some of the youngsters, to see if they are good enough to be given contracts at the Newcastle club.
As we reported yesterday, French midfielder Nacim Boukhelifa is currently on trial at Newcastle.

Comment #2Gonna take just short of a miracle for this one to slip through enough cracks for us to have a real shot. Track all you want, I like due diligence, but I can’t see him getting through to us.

Comment #3As a big Barca fan, I can say without any doubt at all that this story is a non-starter.
This lad is in the Busquets class and I would be amazed if he was allowed to go.
I think Barcelona learned a lot from when they let Fabregas leave (and Pique).
If he was not good enough to come through to Barca’s first team, Pep Guardiola would have let him go already…Guy Assalin for example.

Comment #6Very unlikely, but apparently it wouldn’t be the first time we managed to sneak a big name youngster to our club (Vuckic and Aaron Spear)

Comment #7Why would a Spanosh player want to leave Barca for NUFC unless he was not good enough for Barca. Barca may target our players but we do not target theirs… at least the ones they want to keep.

Comment #8I know it is only the People reporting it, but Jeff Vetere is being linked with coming back to the club in a scouting role!
Does this have anything to do with him?

Comment #10I live in Spain, and watch Barca TV, seen a lot of Barca B and the youth, and this kid stands out in most games. Good tackler, good pass, very much like a deeper-lying Fabregas,, albeit not as good
