News from Sky Sports this evening that Newcastle may be interested in Stoke City play-maker Glenn Whelan.
Glenn Whelan – while playing for Ireland
Other clubs said to be interested in the player are Wigan and West Bromwich Albion, but this is a surprising player for Newcastle to be linked with.
Newcastle do need more creativity in midfield, especially in central midfield, but we wonder if Glenn is good enough to be a first-teamer at Newcastle – we doubt it.
The 26 year-old Dublin-born midfielder started his career at Manchester City in 2001, but moved on to play for Sheffield Wednesday in 2004 after playing just once for City and 15 times on loan at Bury.
Glenn was in the side that won promotion to the Championship in May of 2005, and then in January of 2008 he joined Stoke City for a low £500K.
The 5’10” tall player played 159 times with 17 goals for Sheffield Wednesday, and has so far played 100 times with 6 goals for Stoke City.
We’d be very surprised if Glenn Whelan ended up at Newcastle United, but if he does he would simply be a squad player in the attacking central midfield positions.
Newcastle have little cover for Nolan and Barton in that area of the field, with Danny Guthrie not seemingly coming through much on Tyneside this season.
In total Glenn Whelan has 275 first class appearances in his career with 23 goals.
And in addition he has played 26 times for Ireland with a couple of goals.
What do you think?

Comment #2Not good enough, he rarely gets into the stoke team.
He is not really that creative, more of a holding midfield player, which is where Trapatonni has been playing him for Ireland.
Average player, not what we are looking for, or what we need right now.

Comment #3Hope not. Never been overly impressed with him when he plays for Ireland and definately isn’t good enough for our first team. Would only be cover for an area thats already pretty well covered.

Comment #6No thanks. He would be wasting his time as well as the supporters and the clubs time coming here. He would not get a game and he would spend 99% of his time on the bench. He is best off where he is. Come on Pardew you can do better then this. You are managing NUFC not some second rate 1st division club.

Comment #8I don’t think Whelan is a bad little player, but I don’t see where he could fit into our plans. Seems a strange choice of rumour to start at best. I think we already have better back up on the books, and he certainly wouldn’t make Barton & Nolan frightened for their squad numbers.

Whelan = bad player, I prefer Guthrie.
Please sign Baird, great right back, center midfielder and right midfielder.

Comment #12He might get a game if Barton, Nolan, Ben Arfa, Vukic, Gosling and Guthrie were unavailable. With everyone fit he’d be struggling to make the bench for the stiffs

Comment #16Glen Whelan is not a creative midfielder, he is a defensive midfielder like Tiote. It would be a poor signing in my opinion.
Brum are now going to sign Bentley on loan, presumably because Ashley won’t pay the percentage of his wages that Spurs want.
Larsson is a decent player, no where near as good as Bentley though.

Comment #30No Idea where the Whelan story has come from, as there is no information about this anywhere else. As for Larsson, would I take him over Bentley? Better temperament but not sure about other positives after that. It does look like we will get him with SSN saysing Bentley is due to have his medical over the weekend. If I could pick one signing it would have to be Keane. With a best starting eleven of:
————-Harper————–
Simpson Colo Taylor Enrique
Barton Tiote Nolan Ben Arfa
————–Keane————–
————-Carroll————–

Comment #34kevy….judging by some of the players you chose yesterday to come in, you are in la la land.
seb larrson would DEFINITELY improve our squad. no one can make an assessment on Bentley as no one’s seen him play lately. Whelan? Of course not, but c’mon. We are not going to get any of the players you mentioned. Even if Seb is used as a sub, he’d be replacing a mediocre player on the bench. Subtle, realistic improvement, mate. We are in EIGHTH for f***sake! How can you be anything other than ecstatic with that?!?!?!

Comment #36kevymartins @ 29. Scott Parker wanted to leave as he was homesick for the big smoke. Unlikely he would want to come back here. Not a bad player, but I think we have established that we are covered in the centre of midfield.

Comment #39mattyNUFC @ 34, apparently Saviola has hardly scored 7 times this season! I did hear that AP does indeed fancy his chances of signing Saviola, very much in the same way as I fancy my chances of getting stuck up Beyonce tonight!

Comment #40yeah, so tell me, right now Fergy is better than Seb…are you mad? jonas needs to play on the left, Routledge, as someone mentioned yesterday, should have a shot at the free-role behind the striker and/or used as an impact sub as his shot/speed/skill is wasted with his lack of crossing ability out wide. Ben arfa, as told by Pardew, will have that free role when he gets back, and can of course play on the left. Jonas and Seb battling it out for the right. tell me what exactly is wrong with that??
